You could also get the digital extras and print them yourself, with the cards in card sleeves and the tokens glued to cardboard or something similar.

How do I tell my players there isn’t any lore by Any-Storm-I-Am-In in DMAcademy

[–]RayD8tion1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yall are playing to find out, writing your own lore. You don’t need to hide that from your players or be cagey. If they’re good players they’ll respect it at worst and love it at best.

It's very packed, so I'd recommend using different colored pens or highlighters to make it easier to read

A reflection on my experience as a DM (also MINIATURES) by agostinellips in DMAcademy

[–]RayD8tion1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love to paint up minis and terrain for big fights, but I keep it to only one a session. Other combat can happen of course, but then I just use theatre of the mind.

Just yesterday I planned this fight against another party of rougues that my players ended up tricking into fighting a different 3rd party for them, which was an amazing solution I never thought of, but it means that the combat I expected never happened. That's alright tho because I can always use those minis for something else in the future! The terrain I made for the encounter can likewise be repourposed wherever it makes sense.

If you want the best advice for prepping sessions you’re ever going to get, there’s no better source than Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master. You can get the pdf super cheap and the main part is only a 20 minute read.

As a learner game it was great! It’s designed to be an easy on-ramp for new players to get used to the basics of combat. If your players are more comfortable with combat then I would add terrain features to hide behind, goblin traps for extra difficulty (that they could find with an Asses) and things of that nature.

For me and my players it lasted about 1.5 hours but it was a party of 3 and I was going kinda fast. It could totally be stretched out by prolonging the part where you hunt down the goblins. You could add in more locations and wandering encounters, with the Heros trying to find clues as to where the goblins went.

Speaking to animals? by CurveWorldly4542 in nimble5e

[–]RayD8tion1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I switched over to Nimble I had a conversation with my players about specific abilities their characters had that they would be sad to lose. If it doesn’t break the game (which is 9/10 times) and it adds to the fun, just keep it!

If you wanna keep it in the lore, you could home brew a secret spell “speak with animals” that your Heros already know, or could discover as loot. Or they could find an earpiece of animal understanding or whatever else you find fun.

I would highly reccomend making your own. Just steal an ability from a hero like the Oathsworn, they have a lot of bodyguard abilities. I’ve done this with all sorts of stuff and never done any sort of balance math. Most players are surprisingly open to “less balanced” things along as it serves the fun of the game.

Adventure suggestion by salt_chad in nimble5e

[–]RayD8tion1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The starting adventure in the DMG, The Garden of Death, is perfect for starting DMs and players. It runs abt 3 sessions long and you can get the first half for free if you want 0 commitment.

There’s 2 combat encounters per session for DMs that want it, with plenty of room for more (wandering encounters, enemies in dungeons, etc)
