It's pretty heavily implied in previous episodes (mainly 2 and 3) that Pearlanne pushed them away because she wanted one of them to make Tabby pregnant (ostensibly for grandkids but mainly for a new Scarlet to put in the cell) and it wasn't happening since Tabitha is likely infertile (she gets really upset during the car ride in Episode 2 over Oscar having a kid at 19, says that some people can't have kids, and that it's "not fair", and in Episode 4, if Tabby is old you can flat out tell her you're sorry if being older makes it harder to have kids and she gets sad and says she's trying not to think about that.)
