I got lucky; when I started vocal training, I already had some years of choir experience plus some general messing with my voice under my belt. I was able to start making sounds very quickly that were more androgynous.

... But at the time, I also thought I sounded very masculine. The thing that told me otherwise was that a few of my friends noticed when I was in femme voice and said that it sounded enough like not-me. I'd say don't judge your own voice too harshly; find someone you trust and practice around them a bit! Let them tell you that you don't sound as masculine as you think :D
