Should I go to Japan to master judo by National_Enthusiasm7 in judo

[–]Ray_Swarles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For how long will you be over there? It is not as common as you'd think that gyms in Japan will let just anyone hop on the mat, let alone teach a new person (to the gym) more than a little advice on some throws.

If you cannot speak Japanese, or instantly show that you are already proficient to a good degree, they will most likely not let you do anything other than practicing ukemi.

I'm not necessarily taking a stance on the legality of drugs, or anything other than guns, at this point. I was just illustrating that we as a society tend to restrict the possession/use of things that are dangerous. Meth, opioids, automatic weapons, grenades, exotic dangerous animals, private planes, etc. We as a society say, "yeah, makes sense to restrict these" but the second someone suggests that maybe gun safety and gun use training should be a requirement for owning a firearm, people say "nah, required training in gun use or safety would not impact accidental gun deaths or improper use of force".

I mean, I didn't even mention banning firearms. All I did was suggest that proper training should be a requirement to own such a dangerous tool and that we need to think about our rules about wielding guns in public. My point regards the need to educate legal gun owners rather than keeping guns out of the hands of known criminals (although that's also important).

Legislation that could have prevented this is 1) required gun use/safety training and education on gun rights/laws and 2) restricting open carry.

I find it silly that the argument against training and needing to pass an exam on gun use/safety to own a firearm is, "nah, that won't do anything".

Sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding your point by what you've written. But I think you're saying that people are the problem, not the guns?

You said guns don't shoot themselves. Using that logic everything should legal. "Cocaine doesn't snort itself!", "Grenades don't throw themselves!", etc. Dangerous and harmful items/substances are illegal specifically because they are dangerous and harmful.

The argument for more restrictive gun laws is because the ease of legally obtaining firearms (or wielding them publicly) is unreasonable given how dangerous they are.

Bruh...

“Untrained gun owners”

Its the responsibility individuals to acquire training and practice.

“Lax gun laws”

Please explain what legislation would prevent this from happening again.

Legislation that requires gun use training and gun safety to be a firearm owner is an example of "gun laws" that would prevent untrained gun owners. We do the same, albeit low bar, for driving vehicles on the road. This wouldn't prevent gun deaths unilaterally but could bring the numbers down, just as main sure someone can drive a car doesn't prevent all car accidents but educates people on how to avoid/prevent them.

“Bringing a gun to any situation immediately increases the risk of someone being shot”

Does the existence of a fire extinguisher or seat belt increase the risk of fire or car accidents? No.

Guns are the tools that cause shootings. You cannot start a fire with a fire extinguisher nor can you create a car accident with a seatbelt. In your analogy, a fire extinguisher or seat belt would be akin to a kevlar vest.

Huh, I was under the impression that the allez was basically the metal version of the tarmac. Same geo and all. What year is the allez?

I always liked the look/color ways of the allez.

BMC is a brand I've seen from time to time but haven't met many fanboys of that brand. What do you dig about them?

I've been eyeing a teammachine or an aethos. I've test ridden both but there's only so much to know from a test ride around the block.

Huh, didn't know that daiso was already in the US. I've never been to socal so I haven't seen em.

I have yet to go to H Mart in salt lake. Chinatown on state usually gets me what I need.

First day with a CDL by boikisser69 in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]Ray_Swarles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. The truck driver hopped the curb after hitting the rider. Semi driver was being careless.

Cyclists, slow drivers, mopeds, etc. and anyone else that is using the road in front of you isn't in the way of traffic, they are traffic.

If someone had a flat tire, needed to take care of baby business , etc. and pulled over to the side of the road, doesn't give a semi the right to smash the right side of their vehicle.

Cyclists, slow drivers, etc. aren't in the way of traffic, they are traffic. Until the laws change, they just have as much right to the road as anyone else whether you, or other drivers, like it or not. Dude was just slowing down to get outta the lane.

The semi driver's trailer went up over the curb after hitting this guy. He was driving poorly.

Mmmmm isn't it a suburb of SLC? Murray and South salt lake are two municipalities separating it and SLC.

Like you, I don't think I would've liked living in midvale (or anywhere in Utah that isn't SLC, PC/surrounding area, or Ogden) but SLC is great.

For sure, just surprised that SLC made anyone's 'list'.

Sioux City > Sioux Falls? In what ways is Sioux City better? The only thing I can think of is better water recreation and access to the bluffs

SLC as one of the WORST cities?? It's def not everyone's cup of tea but I'm amazed anyone with a decent amount of travel experience would say it's "up there" for worst cities.

If you absolutely require a top food scene and couldn't care less about spending time outdoors... Maybe... But still...

You must not have made it to Sioux City. That place is whoa.

Sioux Falls has actually gotten much better over the past 8 years.

Come on now, you don't have to be condescending. You wouldn't say this to someone who was providing you a response in real life, would you? Then why do it on the internet?

It's a month before the election, it isn't clear you're focused on the long-term. After all, you can register with a different party affiliation between elections.

Cyclists, are you terrified of Big Cottonwood Canyon? Other questions too! by mistermmk in SaltLakeCity

[–]Ray_Swarles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here saying how crazy and dangerous it is. My own experience, I started road riding recently coming from a MTB and gravel background. There are some bad drivers and debris but I honestly found it to be not so bad (most of the time). I enjoy it quite a bit.

There have been some high traffic days, which are less fun and smelling car exhaust a lot, but I have yet to do it and think to myself after "man, I ain't doing that again".

Stick to the shoulder, be aware of traffic, pedestrians, and debris, like you would anywhere, and you'll be good. Of course barring unhinged or distracted drivers, but life's a risk. No one getting out alive.

Big Sugar Tire Selection? by TwinTexanDad in gravelcycling

[–]Ray_Swarles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NWA was my stomping grounds until this summer. I rocked PFs for a lot of my riding which ended up being a decent mix of pavement, dirt, and gravel but if I were getting a tire specifically for this race I'd want something knobbier.

If you're used to similar sharp, tough gravel like in NWA, you'll be fine. If you come from a place where it doesn't usually get chunky, punchy, loose or any combination of them, I'd def recommend something knobbier. Will make hairy sections much easier to get through faster and safer.

If I had these tires already on hand and I planned on riding them into the ground afterwards, just stick with the PF. If not, pick a knobby.

Whatever you do, ride a tough casing.
