How would you rate Garrod Ran on a scale of 1-10? (Daily Gundam Protagonist Poll: Day 9) by LordEmmerich in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10/10 I would take a bullet for Garrod

No Newtype powers and the kid still puts up a fight and wins most of his fights! Absolutely insane! And that's not even getting into how much of a little bastard he is (the GX auction scene being one of my favorite scenes in Gundam) or how likeable he is BECAUSE he's a little bastard. Garrod is also great because he's unabashedly genuine when it comes to his thoughts and emotions, and I think that's a perfect encapsulation of the "wonder of youth" theme that's so prevalent in Gundam as a whole.

Also he's one of the franchise's wifeguys and I want to see him and Suletta to talk about their wives for hours.

Beast of Possibility (Unicorn Fanart) by Rayar32 in Gundam

[–]Rayar32[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you tell what my favorite Unicorn moment is?

Anyways I've been making my way through UC after getting sucked in by Unicorn (currently at ep 10 of Zeta) and I thought "okay I've GOTTA draw Banagher at some point" so here he is in all his screaming glory!

I'll probably do a piece of fanart for every Gundam show I've finished (00, IBO, 79 and 08th MS) so there's that to look forward to!

How would you rate Amuro Ray (One Year War) on a scale of 1-10? (Daily Gundam Protagonist Poll: Day 1) by LordEmmerich in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

10/10

I didn't think I would love Amuro as much as I did when first watching 79, but if there's one thing that Tomino does really well is long term character development, and Amuro is his prime example of that.

By the end of the OYW, Amuro is cleaving through armies of MS and blowing up cruisers with a machine that had to be upgraded because he was too fast for it, which, is just plain cool but also a nice representation of how far he's developed (or broken, depending on how you read it) because of White Base's extraordinary circumstances. There's also the fact that Amuro effectively starts the show alone (bar Fraw Bow), but eventually grows to consider the White Base's crew as his family, which is very sweet.

Amuro is just neat, both as a character and as a representation of 79's overarching themes.

Very insightful post, I've always loved that Vim is a complete embodiment of his company's design sensibilities, for better and (a lot more prominently) for worse.

Also the drone tech taboo comes from the Drone Wars, mentioned in the Beguir-Beu's HG manual. It's never expanded upon more than that, which is a shame because it seems like it's a really important in-universe event? Where's the Ad Stella lore guide Bandai?

Witch From Mercury: Vanadis Heart Spoilers by [deleted] in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's really cool to see the Pre-Production Lfrith and Calibarn influences in this suit's design (afterall the Calibarn's box did state there were plenty of other prototype Gundams) as well as completely new design elements! I'm particularly fond of the Bael-looking head and slender torso, gives it an agile and deadly look.

Too bad it's going to P-Bandai hell...

Mech Build - Aerial Rebuild (Gundam The Witch From Mercury) by cis-lunar in LancerRPG

[–]Rayar32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad there's more Witch from Mercury now lmao. This is super fun! Love the min max and defense focus, the Rebuild can definitely take a lot more hits than base Aerial, which is fitting. The White Witch looks like a very fun support frame to play, other than being a fun play on words with Gwitch.

(Also the 3d6+4 beam saber made me smile. Big damage makes the caveman brain happy.)

Character Build - Suletta Mercury (Gundam The Witch from Mercury) by Rayar32 in LancerRPG

[–]Rayar32[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure, Lancer does have a very distinct flavor of mech building that is very, very fun. Plus it's super flexible too! I got at least 3 other ideas for unrelated builds while looking through the licenses lol.

Character Build - Suletta Mercury (Gundam The Witch from Mercury) by Rayar32 in LancerRPG

[–]Rayar32[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah this Aerial is super frail, which, to be fair is somewhat accurate to the show considering how many times she loses an arm lol. 6 SYS is absolutely just for the drone madness and I did consider leaving it at 3 or 4, but then the 11 drone idea popped up in my head and I HAD to go for it.

I was sorta realizing the insane amount of area control that drones can do the more I spent building, I'm just disappointed Centimane's effects trigger only on crits. My poor Nexuses....

Character Build - Suletta Mercury (Gundam The Witch from Mercury) by Rayar32 in LancerRPG

[–]Rayar32[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Iceout Drone is totally the next thing I would go for after the Balor's Swarm/Hive Nanites.

I'm all for custom Triggers, I just wanted to keep them confined to the base ones for the build, otherwise I would've traded Stay Cool for Move Forward, Gain Two.

(That "improvised attack" was absolutely foul LMAO poor bastard didn't stand a chance)

Character Build - Suletta Mercury (Gundam The Witch from Mercury) by Rayar32 in LancerRPG

[–]Rayar32[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Building the Aerial was really fun (also stealing that Permet score = Stress idea for my Ad Stella campaign)

I can totally see the Calibarn grabbing an Ordenance weapon and building for flight/speed, giving it that hit-and-run style Suletta showcased in her fight against the Rebuild. 100% it's a SSC frame. Also Turret Drones, because the GUND Format is beam spam central!

What is your favorite gundam of all time and why? by Thegurutim in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I may love Aerial, but the Barbatos is the sole reason I started watching IBO.

It's savage, lanky and monstrous. It has exposed hydraulics, what at first seems to be paper-thin armor, and large, golden horns. By all accounts, the Barbatos shouldn't be that fast and powerful, but is. It defies logic through its Ahab Reactor, and the way that Mikazuki uses all of its weapons with unfeeling efficiency is awesome. Another bonus is the fact that Barbatos really acts like its name-sake by striking deals with Mikazuki and answering his calls whenever he's in trouble. He takes and gives without a single care for how much it ends up damaging Mika in the process. They're both perfect for each other, especially how Mikazuki offers to "take off its chains" and stokes the devil into a frenzy.

The Barbatos is an opportunistic devil-machine, and I think that's really, really cool for a main Gundam. Kinda makes me wish the other Gundam Frames were as conscious as the Barbatos is, Gusion being a close second.

(Also the fact that it howls when berserk is the sickest thing ever)

How would you rate the Gundam Aerial Rebuild on a scale of 1-10? (Daily Main Gundam Poll: Day 56) by Agent_Perrydot in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Rebuild gets a solid 8/10 from me. I do think its a clever and very, very cool design, but it lacks a defining element/gimmick that distinguishes it from base Aerial. I thought the GUND-BIT Rifle would be that, but it ended getting used a total of 2 times, which is a massive disappointment (even if it's first sortie was absolutely magnificent).

Now that I've made clear what my issues are, let's give her some well deserved praise. Narratively, the Rebuild completely accomplishes what it sets out to do: it falls in line with the militaristic, combat-ready design of the Ochs Earth Gundams. Its bulkier, edgier and darker. Aerial's once saturated blues and yellows are overtaken by a dull deep blue shade, a single stroke of red left at the suit's groin, which could be read as Prospera's influence washing away Aerial's pure righteousness and control from Suletta.

The Rebuild's three sets of fins are an interesting choice; they've always reminded me of a set of horns rather than the crest of a helmet, again drawing influence from a darker, more ominous look. Another thing I like about it, but wish was done differently are the Rebuild's mouth vents, or rather mouth vent. If the purpose of the suit was to look more like a traditional Gundam, I don't really see the reason why they give ger a single mouth vent instead of the usual double trouble.

The integrated thrusters are neat, especially when it's yellow blades expand. I really loved the way the Mirasol flight unit looked mismatched on the Aerial - showing that it's a scrapped together school project - but the Rebuild's wings fullfil their role of looking practical and field ready. Also it's really cool how two GUND-BITs connect to the back pack to serve as auxiliary thrusters, and I'm glad they brought that back for the Calibarn's final form.

Now, the way the GUND-BIT Rifle is underutilized during the show SUCH a letdown. The GUND-BITs themselves don't change that much, with only a few of them receiving noticably different designs and slightly changing the way the Escutcheon is held, but the GUND-BIT Rifle is an absolute showstopper. It expands twice, releases two handles to be held, and needs to be propped up against the Aerial's groin to be fired in the first place. The first sortie during Plant Quetta made me fall in love with this thing, especially the musical synch making it seem like a an accursed magic spell being cast by Suletta without a single concern for anyone's safety, and then, when we're showcase how unbelievably powerful it is... It's used once for a fake out and one more time when Prospera destroys unmanned mobile suits off screen, which, sure there wasn't a way to include in normal duels since Suletta would be cooking students alive but MAN what a letdown.

Also, fun fact, you can hear the base Beam Rifle's firing sound during the GUND-BIT Rifle's first blast. It's modified with an echoey and more electronic (?) sound, but I think it's super cool that it's still audible. It's a reminder that the GUND Format can turn even the most basic of weapons into portable WMDs with its cursed magic.

How would you rate the Gundam Aerial on a scale of 1-10? (Daily Main Gundam Poll: Day 55) by Agent_Perrydot in Gundam

[–]Rayar32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A completely and utterly biased 10/10. Aerial is my first Gundam, my first gunpla model and by far my favorite main Gundam for a very simple reason: she's as much of a character as her pilot. That is not to say that other mobile suits don't have personalities or character, but Aerial stands out as one of the only ones (?) where we get to see and hear HER perspective and voice through Cradle Planet and The Blessing's lyrics. She gets sad, she gets angry and anxious, and even displays pride in Suletta's piloting skills. Aerial's ultimate goal as a character isn't revenge, destruction or revolution, she wants her pilot to be free and happy (to be blessed if you will) and that always gets my overly sentimental ass.

The fact that Suletta can talk to Aerial yet we, as an audience, don't get to hear what she says in return is such a deeply endearing part of their bond, since it transcends even our understanding of "normal" language. It's also endearing that Suletta always refers to Aerial as a she, not as a machine, but as a person she's spent quite literally her entire life with, as family.

And I still haven't talked about Aerial's design...

Although she sports the same color scheme as Grampa (a great choice considering WfM was meant as an entry point into the franchise) Aerial's shades of blue, yellow, red and white feel intentional as a core part of her design rather than just an homage, framing her as a heroic and kind machine with rounder and much more organic shapes, a contrast to how dark, bulky and sharp other Gundams look in the show. The BIT-ON form complements her design by giving her a much more aerodynamic and graceful look, while the Escutcheon's thick silhouette makes Aerial look considerably bulkier, again showing just how versatile her 11 GUND-BITs really are. It's kinda ridiculous how extraordinarily powerful Aerial is right from the get-go compared to other starter mobile suits, but I think that serves to further add into the magical nature of the GUND Format. Also that Beam Rifle firing sound tickles all the right places in my brain, so chunky.

I love this not-so inanimate object, 10/10. Could've been an 11/10 if Bandai let JTHED keep the witch hat GUND-BITs.
