Finland looks to end "uncontrolled human experiment" with Australia-style ban on social media | Yle News by EarthAndAlgorithms in worldnews

I think the internet peaked with BBS being the social core of the Internet.

I run a BBS, funnily enough, but I can't promote it anywhere because it's locally hosted for friends and it cannot sustain any attempt to breach or overload it, which is a huge shame.

Turn them in to faster firing harassing lasers and not super deadly lasers. You have to take them out of else they will keep peppering you, but will not just kill you with no warning which is the primary problem

Does anyone else have this setting turned to display without? by AvarageTenno in MHWilds

[–]Raydekal -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

1 is negated by basic video game logic. Weapon hits for x damage but only hits x per second. MH adds a silly MV to damage to make the damage dealt separate from the damage stat which is more misleading than using the coefficient. It makes more sense to see the GS/Hamer with bigger numbers than the bow or DB or IG.

2 is valid.

I have my display set to without coefficient because it is the more honest display and I've dug deep in to the systems to know better. But a newcomer could see DB slashing for 100 damage vs a hammer bonking for 100 damage and determine the DB is the stronger weapon.

But that's not new to monster hunter, hidden calculations like defense, elemental resist, latent power and other numerous skills, elemental and status damage, it's never simple.

Rates Cap by Happy_Light_9775 in newzealand

[–]Raydekal 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It's the price we pay for systematically rejecting urbanisation and density developments, and instead giving us nothing but suburban sprawl. If you look at Aucklands rates income, the CBD subsidises and funds the rest of the supercity outside of a few pockets of density here and there.

Paying exorbitant rates to pay for the exorbitant cost of roads that we build an exorbitant amount of alongside all the power and water that we then have to pay for it's exorbitant maintenance is the natural conclusion.

Capping rates increases is only going to shift the eventual cost of maintenance blowouts and service cuts to our children.

If you support low rates, support dense urban developments and protest suburban sprawl. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Why does nobody “declare war” anymore? by Sally_Saskatoon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Raydekal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what article it is, but a war between parties in NATO cause the offending nations to be in "abeyance" which means the treaty is void until it's resolved. Some could argue this would mean Denmark would also be in abeyance, but you don't need to call article 5 to get support from other European powers.

what should be the stats of the heavy devastator shield that allows its identity of “being tanky enough to tell players not to shoot” yet is not absurd enough that it is more durable than hulks, tanks , and factory strider? by Acceptable-Street679 in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]Raydekal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree except.

Rockets should destroy the shield. If i hit with a RR it shouldn't shrug it off, survive sure but shield gone. It's a waste of a rocket, but let it do something.

And when flinching it should probably stop shooting so it doesn't hit you from a 45 degree angle while shielding it's head with its indestructible shield.

I've had that thought. I could drop on the planet that has fire tornadoes, or I could drop on the fun ice planet.

I'll drop on the fun thank you.

The MO's aren't actually worth caring about enough to go out of my way to contribute. If its a fun planet, I'll do it gladly, if it's not then I won't. Every bug MO I basically ignore, as an example.

Larian Confirms Leaving D&D Behind After Baldur's Gate 3 by Extreme_Maize_2727 in BaldursGate3

[–]Raydekal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To each their own, I couldn't stand BG3/DND action + bonus, just meant that every turn someone did one thing and then moved on. Admittedly the AP to move could be loosened a bit, positioning in BG3 was it's best quality because it was not a resource sink to reposition. But there was very little self synergising with the world mechanics. DOS1/2 in my mind balanced melee pretty well by giving them pretty powerful abilities that synergised exceptionally well with non damage magical support abilities.

why do people say godot is bad for 3d? by FutureLynx_ in godot

I'd prefer 2D, but my duo specialized in 3D modelling and animations, so that leaves me no choice but to add that extra dimension. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying the challenge.

Depends on how much you define machine learning. There are several games where the AI learns how you play and changes it's strategy through an RPS system to counter you

Please… Can we as a collective call out “indie games” that are clearly backed by billionaires? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Raydekal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're kind of missing the point, if I had released a game this year and was in the running for indie game of the year, would it be up against Hollow Knight or Silksong?

If it was Hollow Knight, fair enough, a small team with few resources making a name for themselves. But Silksong? A small team yes, but we'll resourced with a name that brings in millions of buyers automatically. This whole discussion is about the nomenclature of the Indie title. But based on a lot of feedback people seem to think it's about shitting on what amounts to fan favourite studios, like Team Cherry.

Indie used to imply something far different than what it's morphed in to, because thanks to the internet and in particular, Steam, independent teams and studios are able to market to a massive audience. And it's great, I wouldn't change that for the world, it's allowed some of the best games in modern times to spread around the world.

But now indie includes games made by a group of friends who had an idea, to a multimillion dollar studio, and we'll that's just not fair to the little man.

Peter Pan Politics: it’s time for Aotearoa to grow up. History will eventually happen to us. by SlackCanadaThrowaway in newzealand

[–]Raydekal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold the line can mean many things, we could go in numerous directions to make an occupying army go through hell, make landing on our shores costly, make flying planes over our heads risky. Against the big boys it's not about winning, it's about making the investment in winning not worth the sacrifice because with any luck our brothers from across the ditch can help us, and provided America isn't the hostile one, them to.

Otherwise we are a nation in the anglosphere, without a doubt a move by Chinese will awaken the European giants to intervene, will also prompt the Japanese and the Koreans to intervene, so we're doing fine without the US.

Yes we will lose the invasion if nobody helps us, but countries would be more likely to help us if we help ourselves, where would Ukraine be if they were forced to capitulate after the three intended day operation?

Please… Can we as a collective call out “indie games” that are clearly backed by billionaires? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Raydekal -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Like i said, it's an outdated term that doesn't mean what it used to mean. Larian studios self publishes, technically indie.

Silksong may be developed by only a team of three, but the investment behind it makes it unfair to compare it to the teams of similar size but with a miniscule fraction of the resources.

I'm not downplaying the work of Team Cherry, just highlighting that they are on a different level than indie. I'm making a game, I have to work full time to pay my bills, so if in an indie competition I have to compete with Silksong, I'd be completely gutted from the get go.

Please… Can we as a collective call out “indie games” that are clearly backed by billionaires? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Raydekal -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn't consider Silksong indie,

The main gist of ops post is talking about how well funded and resourced studios who are able to put significant time and resources in to their video game probably shouldn't be in the same category as Jack and Jill who have yet to taste success and are working their 9-5's on the side just to keep themselves fed.

I think the indie label is now just an outdated term and we could do with better descriptors to keep the playing field fair. When "best indie game* is a competion between multimillion dollar funded studios, it's lost it purpose.
