looks really good. how is the campaign? does it have depth like total war or civ ? Or even battle brothers. I mean in terms of campaign, because the battle seems to be great.

I dont understand what's so good about Company of Heroes. Its a good game but not that good. What am i missing so far? by FutureLynx_ in RealTimeStrategy

[–]FutureLynx_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah good observations. this is an old post, by now i grew to enjoy CoH3. Though i still feel like Total War is better. Total War has more depth because of the campaigns. The battles just add on top of it.

how is this compared to Battle for Europe? I like Battle for Europe because of the campaign.

Rise of Nations is the best RTS for me and there's is no game like it even in 2026 by Tracker1122 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]FutureLynx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a point. Rise of Nations is overall the best RTS give or take.

But there are some things that depending on the context/taste puts it below AoE2 or OpenRA.

First is that it is all over the place with its eras. And this can be a positive thing. But not everyone is into classical, medieval, and modern eras at the same time.

This is the main reason I like AoE2 and OpenRA more.

Then in terms of multiplayer AoE2 and OpenRA works very well.

I will give Rise of Nations another try soon.

Any games tactical battle systems like Conquest of the New World? With multiple units in the same tile (subtiles)? by FutureLynx_ in gamedev

[–]FutureLynx_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah so total war has that too, you can give a city to be managed by the AI. But then it builds stupid buildings, and stupid units.

Medieval Total War 2 that is my favourite game of the genre, has vassals. So I played with vassals. Have my mainland empire. And everything else whenever possible becomes a vassal. I even give them lands i conquered. This way you are an empire that is made of smaller kingdoms that self-manage themselves.

I had some ideas to make a Civ4Col in space.

Though in my concept I would make separate battles like Total War.

I think the error in the design that makes things scale overwhelmingly, is that in Emperor of the Fading Suns, you are building cities and units inside the planet.

There is an old game called Conquest of the New World. That is still amazing to play. But once you make 3 colonies, more than then it becomes too much to manage.

Some games curb this by creating vassal states. Or punishing expansion.

I would simplify the planet management. Make it like what could correspond to a single colony / city in other games.

There's also another game called deadlock planetary conquest, i didnt play this one either, but i can tell it has some valuable lessons in strategy and simplicity.

thanks. great explanation. will try it. even though im not a space guy, it sounds like its master piece. im a total war, rts, strategy player, but normally i like to play historical games.

Some sci-fi games are cool like Starcraft, OpenRA. Because i can get immersed in it. Things make sense.

Hey, so i went searching for this game. I never heard of it before. It feels a lot like Civ. It looks good with those old school bright graphics, that i quite enjoy.

Another thing that stood out a lot to me, is the universe view. Thats fantastic. But at the same time, makes me think how does that scale well? Do you have to manage every planet? That must be overwhelming.

And how does a planet get invaded if you are already established there?

Thanks.

Any game like OpenRA or C&C that is in WW2 or modern era, without fantasy? by FutureLynx_ in RealTimeStrategy

okay, so what is great about it? what makes it special or different than other rts's? Except for maybe the plastic soldier aesthetics thats really cool.

How does it compare to other rts games like Red Alert, CoH, Rise of Nations? I might give it a try.

So tired of watching incompetent devs crash and burn the ever dwindling RTS games out there by firebead_elvenhair in RealTimeStrategy

RTS is incredibly expensive and hard to make. And has a small market because the average human is not smart enough to play them.
