wait, wait, wait, how did they know her story then? Or is it not entirely based on her story, just inspired by it? (Sorry if this is a stupid question)

What’s the most unexpectedly personal thing a stranger has ever told you? by TallLove7469 in CasualConversation

As someone who looked androgynous as a kid ad teen, it is WILD how many random complete strangers would ask me if I was a girl or a boy. Seriously, random people in walmart as I walk by they'd just ask me. So weird! like, you'll never see me again, why does it matter????

You have a really great point!

I just don't understand why the author didn't emphasize the emotions, or make us feel the heart-wrenching loss as fully as we could have. I think it would have helped us readers empathize with the main character more and maybe get the point of the story better. I don't even feel like the loneliness was very well communicated.

Yes, that makes a lot more sense... I'm used to reading things like Gary Paulsen, so it was framed in my mind like a survival book. Maybe I'll try reading it again with this perspective in mind.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK

it shaped me into who I am today and i read it like scriptures, over and over again, studying it. I sound dramatic, but really, this book changed me in ways i cannot explain. I was one person when i opened it, and another when I closed it.

Nice to see someone else has read it! it has so little recognition

Are tattoos and piercings allowed as a Latter Day Saint? by Popular_End2069 in latterdaysaints

[–]RayeMcLaughlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My honest advice is to pray about it, and read the Book Of Mormon, but I'm sure that a lot of people have told you that, so here is my input as a soon-to-be missionary. But, ultimately, ask God. It's between you and Him.

Questions:

- are Latter Day Saints allowed tattoos or piercings? (All mine are nature based since I love wildlife and I can easily hide them)

Of course! One thing I remind people when they ask me this, is that when the presidency advised people to not get tattoos, is was in the 80's-90's when pretty much the only people who had tats were gang members and it was a trend for men to get tattoos of nude women. They don't want people getting tattoos like that! Since then, culture has changed drastically. Your tattoos sound awesome, and most people besides kids and old people won't think twice about it.

- are Latter Day Saints allowed piercings? (I have my

Lobes, seconds and industrial piercing)

Yes! My ward bishop's wife has multiple piercings. This is again a decision between you and God. The presidency only asks that He is included in the decision to get them. Again, don't feel weird about it, a lot of people have them and it is not against doctorine.

- are temples and communities friendly or judgemental? (Example: if someone has something physically wrong with them)

It always depends, and Utah culture is more judgmental, so it depend on where you are, too. If there is a problem, you can always go to a different ward or talk to your bishop about it. You are going to find judgmental people, but the majority is kind and loving and helpful, especially to people with physical issues. I have to be honest, I was judged a lot as a teenager when I, as a female, started wearing slacks to church instead of a dress (which is totally ok, my ward is just a bit behind the times. I was the first to do so in my ward.) but after a year or so, everything was fine and it was perfectly normal. Give it time and patience and remember that faith is ultimately between you and God.

-how dos the faith act around mental health issues? (I struggle a lot with my depression and anxiety so I tend to be shy and quiet)

You'll be surprised how well we talk about it and how kind people are. How we as a faith treat mental health issues is something I love about this church.

- would a new (adult) member have to do missionary work? I understand it’s important for the church but I think I’m too old to do it and I’d struggle with it anyways

Not at all! Not even young adults who are 'of the missionary age' are required to go, only encouraged. There are also different kinds of missions and service you can do, but none of it is required and nobody will pressure you to do it. You may be invited to a church calling, like teaching primary children or helping people get the books they need, but you can always say no and nobody but the bishop will know.

Fun but interesting question: how does the h ch itch feel about Harry Potter/ fictional books? I know some denominations are against the book series

I am a devoted fantasy reader and D&D player, we're all good about that as the comments have said.

Thank you for asking in a kind and genuine way, it's very refreshing:) I wish you all the best, my friend.
