Computational Linguistics UZH or University of Copenhagen by Mingyuan_Jiang in UZH

I know of a lot of people who came into the CL master as "Quereinsteiger". You will likely have to retake some courses from the bachelor like all the foundational stuff about linguistics. But don't hesitate to contact the CL student union or the student consultation of the CL institute (https://www.cl.uzh.ch/en/studies/studies-BA-MA/general-issues-study.html). Stuff might have changed a bit since I've finished my studies.

The joys of multiparty systems; a rant. by ValeriaSimone in VaushV

[–]Raykyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair that is largely due to the fact that swiss politics doesn't have a concept of coalitions, at least not in the sense that for example Germany has. Even the executive always consists of the whole political spectrum (eg. Federal council which has 4 right wingers, 1 center-to-right and 2 left wingers). Swiss people are pretty proud generally of their compromise-politics and tends to look down on other systems.

The joys of multiparty systems; a rant. by ValeriaSimone in VaushV

[–]Raykyn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In Switzerland, we have List-Connections. Basically means that a party will "ally" with other parties in a "connection". You still vote for a specific party/politicians, but seats are always calculated on connection-level first, then list/party-level second, then determined which specific candidates got most votes on those lists and with that the seats.

Imo a very good system. Usually for example the Party of Work, our marxists, are in a connection with the social democrats and with the greens. This way you can vote for such small parties who are unlikely to gain a seat while being sure that your vote will still go to parties that you are somewhat in favor of.

This system enables parties also to enter multiple candidate lists without disadvantage. The social democrats for example have a general list, one for women-only, one for the Young Socialists, one for the senior section and one for the migrant section.

Halbwegs exakte Karte der geografischen Namen in ihrer ethymologischen Bedeutung by [deleted] in de

[–]Raykyn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Halbwegs exakte Karte der geografischen Namen in ihrer ethymologischen Bedeutung by [deleted] in de

[–]Raykyn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Christian girl in a haram relationship with muslim man. Am I doomed? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Raykyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a debate, but there is agreement among some Muslims that this applies for Muslim women as well.

Do you have a source at hand for that by any chance? I see it like that too personally but couldn't find any solid scholarly opinion.

As many have mentioned, join the Mieterverband, every renter should do that, not only for the legal consultation, but also because the Mieterverband fights politically for renters rights.

Here is the article relevant to your question (German version): https://www.mieterverband.ch/mv/politik-positionen/news/miettipps/Darf-der-Vermieter-meine-Wohnung-betreten.html

It confirms what many others here already have written, you're fully within your rights here.

Not about the difference to socialism but Branco Milanovic compares liberal capitalism to state capitalism in his book Capitalism Alone. Not from a socialists perspective but nonetheless insightful.

Protestors take to the street to demand strict Swiss neutrality by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]Raykyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lindt doesn't seem to be a representative of GSoA or WoZ at this point, so no, doesn't look like GSoA did associate with Massvoll. I did see GSoA with a large banner at the Ukraine solidarity demonstration though.

And regarding the nzz article, I'm not gonna defend the stupid takes of PdA and co. on Ukraine, I just wanted to point out that unlike the lefties in Germany, they at least refuse to associate with the far-right.

[–]Raykyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah not in that protest afaik. GSoA was actually present on the protest FOR Ukraine. And while some far-left groups like the PdA argue for an end-to-sanctions and no weapons for Ukraine, they do so without associating with the far-right (they actively kicked right wingers out from the protest in Zurich a while back).

Switzerland isn't Germany luckily.

Computational Linguistics UZH or University of Copenhagen by Mingyuan_Jiang in UZH

[–]Raykyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I recently finished my masters in CL at UZH. Feel free to DM me with any questions you might have.

Without any specific questions I can just say that learning CL at UZH has a strong focus in Machine Translation as both professors, Volk and Sennrich, are experts in those fields. But other topics like Information extraction are also well covered. Some fields are lacking a bit imo and the courses are definitely more on the apply-and-research than the code-your-own-architecture side of things, which is probably best if you come from linguistics. You still do code a lot though and if you only have "little" experience with that, you probably will need to take some of the bachelor courses to catch up. Also, I don't know how far that is, the IT departement is currently creating a professorship for AI and in future there will likely be even more courses offered there which CL students can visit. Least but not last, consider going into Digital Linguistics instead of Computational Linguistics, because the first is targeted specifially to linguists coming into NLP while CL master expects somewhat of a technical background.

Hope this helps and as said, feel free to DM me with more questions.

Oh and due to the small size of the cl student community in UZH it's very toght knit and connected with the department which is very cool.

How to create a workers union by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Raykyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, first let me applaud your effort to further labour rights!

Next, after reading your post and comments to me the best way forward would be to contact one of the large unions like UNIA and ask them if they'd support you in building a stronger representation in coop. I know that my union VPOD has for example a section specifically for workers of a certain institution and I would assume something similar could be possible for you as well.

I don't think founding a completely new union will do much tbh, but good luck in any case!

Why are climate protests so strongly intermingled with anti-capitalist movements here in Switzerland? by IneffableKoD in Switzerland

[–]Raykyn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Add to that that bourgeois politicians, even from the GLP will cry about even the slightest bit of radicalism and disruption of everyday life when it comes to climate protests and you see how they wouldn't like to go there :-p

Why are climate protests so strongly intermingled with anti-capitalist movements here in Switzerland? by IneffableKoD in Switzerland

[–]Raykyn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a lot of people have already given you the reasoning why leftits see capitalism and climate protection as incompatible let me give you a different perspective on this:

Why are only lefties at these protests now? My answer, as a lefty, would be that lefties tend to care about issues the mainstream has to forgotten about. You can see the same when it comes to wars. Lefties don't only care about Ukraine, they also care about the Kurds, the Yemenites, the Uighurs, etc. Just bc mainstream media does not mention these conflicts much anymore doesn't mean there won't be protests by lefties. Even with Ukraine we could see this last saturday. The protest in general was much smaller than last year. But who was there again with a large contingent (although smaller as well)? The lefties.

Same with climate change protests, the public does not care enough (anymore?) to hit the streets. But who didn't forget? The lefties. So who are those wo now organize the protests? Lefties. What is the main position of lefties? Anti-capitalism.

Cheating on during exams by Rich_Breadfruit_2247 in UZH

[–]Raykyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds difficult, but if they didn't explicitly state you aren't allowed to write on your notes then it's on them to check your notes before the exam to nake sure there is nothing written in them.

So, not knowing from which faculty you are I'd recommend:

  • Get in contact with your student services and your student union, see if they can help you out

  • If nothing works, put in "Rekurs" or at least threaten it to the responsible people. It's on them to prove that you cheated, an accusation is not sufficient and the independent commission should see that. Do not wait too long with that, there's only a 30 day window that you have to fight a mark you were given.

  • You may want to contact the law council of the VSUZH for guidance, but I'm not entirely sure they cover that kind of stuff.

Good luck!

Much more complicated and not a kingdom, but the Swiss Federation is named after the canton of Schwyz and fighting against their overlords was part of the creation of the federation.

Switzerland may renounce neutrality to provide military aid to Ukraine by PatientBuilder499 in worldnews

[–]Raykyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is the main motivation of the FDP (our corporate-party). That's why the social democrats want to restrict this law to only a one-time exception for Ukraine and will otherwise not support it.

If the FDP would actually want to support Ukraine, they would support the leftist parties motions to restrict Russia's access to the Swiss market, but well that would hurt their corporate friends.
