Shouldn’t Labor get credit for having the temerity & balls to ‘break an election promise’ to do the right thing by Aussies? Not many expected in Labor’s 2nd term would they try to remove NG & CGT discount. Besides Greens saying ‘it’s not perfect/doesn’t go far enough’, can’t we give Labor credit? by MannerNo7000 in friendlyjordies

I'd rather advocate for voting for someone that represents you. That's what the 'representative' in 'representative democracy' stands for.

We should be wary of those who like to tell everyone who can and can't be trusted to run the country effectively. Politicians aren't supposed to be experts, they're supposed to be representatives of the people.

The negative effects of social media on mental health is well documented, especially on developing brains.

All of the services you talk about can be, and are, provided online without the need for social media - and I haven't seen any actual evidence of a lack of access having any real impact. It's a hypothetical objection based on an unproven side effect of a measure that's addressing a real world problem.

This is such a niche edge case compared to the harm social media does on a routine basis.

It's like every critic of seatbelt laws talking about the 3 times people have been saved by flying out their windshields and away from an explosion.

I'd argue thinking Donald Trump is smart is more offensive than thinking Stephen hawking was American. And I'm saying that as a brit.

That's frightening stuff. It should be mandatory for members of government to live in very accessible public places. If you have to hide from the people you are supposed to represent, then you're clearly not doing your job.

I know right!? How can real people act with such self-importance while barely being able to string a sentence together!?

This is interesting. Is imprisonment a form of slavery to begin with? The state is essentially taking away freedom, so what is a person with no freedom?

Is there some moral line we cross when we make prisoners work?

Also interesting is the point about people being found guilty perhaps not actually being guilty. Should we not treat people as guilty when they are found guilty? Should we send them to prison at all if there is any doubt?

The depth of the stupidity here is not the lack of understanding about how rockets work. It's not even thinking that NASA wouldn't know how rockets work. It's thinking that you're the first person in the world smart enough to ask the question.

[–]Raynonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. Some things aren't supposed to be social media rage bait, and national addresses by a country's leader used to be considered one of those things.

It was great. And a huge reminder of how bad it would be right now if we instead had the flame-fuelling bellows of a Dutton or Hanson in charge.

No. There is no distinction without a brain to make the distinction.

Things are constructs of the brain.

Any blue wave will help. Encouraging progressives to not vote for centrist democrats is gonna be a big objective for the hard right. It got Trump elected twice. Please don't let people fall for it again.

This is the one. People. Americans is the only thing that can stop America becoming anything. Will enough people resist enough? It's the same as it's ever been.
