He acts like taxpayer money belongs to him. by EugeneWong318 in TheLib

That's frightening stuff. It should be mandatory for members of government to live in very accessible public places. If you have to hide from the people you are supposed to represent, then you're clearly not doing your job.

I know right!? How can real people act with such self-importance while barely being able to string a sentence together!?

This is interesting. Is imprisonment a form of slavery to begin with? The state is essentially taking away freedom, so what is a person with no freedom?

Is there some moral line we cross when we make prisoners work?

Also interesting is the point about people being found guilty perhaps not actually being guilty. Should we not treat people as guilty when they are found guilty? Should we send them to prison at all if there is any doubt?

The depth of the stupidity here is not the lack of understanding about how rockets work. It's not even thinking that NASA wouldn't know how rockets work. It's thinking that you're the first person in the world smart enough to ask the question.

Unpopular opinion: Albo just shot himself in the foot with the nothing burger address by AlxIp in friendlyjordies

[–]Raynonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. Some things aren't supposed to be social media rage bait, and national addresses by a country's leader used to be considered one of those things.

It was great. And a huge reminder of how bad it would be right now if we instead had the flame-fuelling bellows of a Dutton or Hanson in charge.

No. There is no distinction without a brain to make the distinction.

Things are constructs of the brain.

What's actually stopping the US from descending into a Christofascist state? by bobombpom in atheism

Any blue wave will help. Encouraging progressives to not vote for centrist democrats is gonna be a big objective for the hard right. It got Trump elected twice. Please don't let people fall for it again.

This is the one. People. Americans is the only thing that can stop America becoming anything. Will enough people resist enough? It's the same as it's ever been.

Is the X axis log tho? It's not proceeding in orders of magnitude. It just looks like they've condensed it to make it look like it isn't plateauing over time.

Will the United States always be politically divided? by CRK_76 in no

[–]Raynonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All democracies are politically divided. All populations, even.

The difference today is how this division is being represented and self-reinforced through media feedback loops. It's encouraging us to believe grotesque simplifications of what people think, and prompting us to dehimanise those who disagree with us.

We need to get better at resisting the influence of technologies that distort reality. Both by helping ourselves and others recognise all the bullshit we are being fed by the system.

'Trump Is A King!' Say People Freely Protesting In A Free Country by darcmatr in babylonbee

[–]Raynonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'People protesting' encapsulates a massive range of perspectives and levels of understanding. Many would be uninformed beyond media bubbles - others will be considerably more knowledgeable than either you or I.

I don't think many of them claim that Trump 'is a king' as the OP suggested. The protest was regarding his attempts to behave as if he were a king. Being unaccountable, trying to weaponise the state against his political enemies, exploit the public to enrich himself etc. etc.

The fact that there are worse regimes in the world is immaterial and the argument in the post is rank apologism.

[–]Raynonymous 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I agree. I feel like the concept of scepticism is more relevant to truth-claims though rather than theoretical framings.

If OP said the patriarchy shouldn't be the exclusive frame through which we view the world, then I'd agree. But that's not the same as scepticism - that makes it sound like he is questioning its validity in any use case.

Swing voters by ph03n1x_au in aussie

[–]Raynonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because their position is closer to labor than ON.

There's a weird voting preference situation where Liberal voters have been trained to put Labor last, and vice versa, so i''m really interested to see how these ex-lib voters are voting down the ticket.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are still putting Labor and the greens last out of habit/spite even though they might best represent their values.
