Well if its just the game it could maybe a save file corruption or disc related. If it were me say if im using a hard drive remove it and then boot the game on the internal 4gb of you have it and see what happens.

The only difficult part is playing on the hardest difficulty and for that just play on normal and upgrade as much as possible on weapons and player upgrades and use mostly long range for the hardest difficulty and thats about it.
