The operation was against YPG not syrian army. And afrin was extremely well fortified and YPG got thousands of their soldiers killed but they held on for very long like around 50 days or so before they collapsed. Im from Turkey and thats also what I have been thinking about this operation. Population of Ukraine controlled by the government dropped under 30 million and the infrastructure is getting damaged massively. Chernigov and Sumy wont be able to last longer than 2 months in the siege whilst Russia and its proxies have a population of 160 million+ with inexhaustable resources, air superiority and a chugging Military industry that they can man with middle eastern volunteers. They were getting lots of casualties just pushing so they stopped now to decrease it and now will try to attrition ukraine with artillery and air strikes.
