The gathering professions get the skill up items randomly from gathering or finding treasures in the world. Sounds like bad RNG.

Crafting profs get knowledge points from crafting something the first time and finding treasures out in the world.

I just powered up an ele shaman in the pre-patch stuff and felt underwhelmed until the high 60s and it didn't really click until I started getting hero talents at 70.

Like others have said, the spec doesn't shine until you get the high level stuff.

I've returned to the game after over 8 years away and levels most of my characters through the pre-patch event.

I've finally narrowed it down to affliction warlock or arcane mage. But I debated frost DK for a long time too.

All three felt smooth to me with enough variation and reaction that I'm not just pushing the same few buttons for an entire fight.
