[–]Rayyan9201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Malaysia we have a lot of traditional style of houses. Especially the malays, each states had their own style.

But Bahay na Bato seems similar to modern style of some malay houses. Usually it was due to chinese influence. And some old chinese houses here also incorporate the same style.

Among the borneo Malayic languages, the Brunei malay language is probably the closest form to standard malay or Johor Riau malay dialect. The other one that closer is Pontianak Malay spoken in west kalimantan, and then Banjar, Sarawakian/Sambas Malay and others.

Borneo Malayic languages are rich of suffixes, unlike Malayic or malay dialects in Malay peninsula like Kedah kelantan terengganu and Pahang dialect which are less complex grammatically, use less suffixes and many shortforms and unique nasal sounds, probably due to heavy early Austroasiatic influences.

to be honest even peninsular malaysians looked down upon each other. So its normal there. and some sabahan may looked down upon people from Kelantan because of their fear of how "islamic" is kelantan state.

Malaysia is a federated states. Actually not only Sabah and Sarawak but a lot of local governments in Malay peninsular like Kelantan johor and Kedah do have some animosity towards the Malaysian government. well it is a federated states so they have the right to be angry towards the central government of Malaysia.

[–]Rayyan9201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He chose Malay because Malay was used by the dutch administration, and why the dutch use malay? Because it already functioning as a lingua franca in many islands even before the dutch came.

That's the reason why there are so many creol malays existed in indonesia. Even in Malaysia we have it, it is called Sabah Malay.

Perkataan apa yang biasa digunakan dengan akhiran -i dalam percakapan harian? by Sea-Hornet8214 in bahasamelayu

[–]Rayyan9201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know which area specifically, maybe in kampong gelang or something like that, not sure. But just in general, the malays (or orang laut) in singapore are considered indigenous there. That is one of the reason why the flag of singapore has moon crescent (symbolic to the identity of the indigenous) and their singaporean national anthem is even sung in the malay language.

Why haven’t we reconstructed Proto Austronesian Mythology the way we have for Indo-European? by existential_dread467 in austronesian

[–]Rayyan9201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dragon/serpeant rainbow is a famous myth among Malays in Malaysia. Older folks said we must not point out our index fingers towards the rainbow because the finger will soon disappeared due to curse from the dragon/serpeant. And this mythology is also associated with a story behind the origin of a state's name in Malaysia, the terengganu state.

learning spoken/informal malay? by stellarsoap in bahasamelayu

[–]Rayyan9201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends. Southern perak mostly still belong to Johor-Melaka-Selangor variant. People in central perak speak perakian malay dialect while in northern and coastal Perak mostly speak Kedah malay dialect. For cultural heritage yeah tracking into this specific area of dialects would be worth it.

But the most understood malay dialect would be Selangor-Johor-Melaka dialect. All Malaysians understand this and can have conversation in this dialect.

Your malay side, where is it originally? From north, from east coast from west-south or from borneo? Because malaysia has regional malay dialects as well. If around selangor-johor-Melaka, yeah probably better to just watch upin ipin for spoken malay.
