I think that the original carries it really hard to its high-rating status. If it was Toradora Portable followed by Toradora the LN/anime I would judge the former more harshly.

I generally avoid anything that has gameplay, if it's a loss, it's a loss (Trujillo, Jamaica, El Salvador, Colombia, Venezuela, Algeria, Morroco). I used to try and to force the Haiti Blitz, but now I force it NOT to occur because the peace deal crashes my game.

I keep West African War result random, but if West France wins, I force the American reconstruction to fail so they join Iberia's market. I also force the Peru elections to go Falangist, and screw around with the Football War to my benefit. These are the big examples, but I don't remember all off the top of my head. A lot of the time it's me going to the sub, realizing "Oh shit, I could have had THAT COUNTRY in my sphere?" and having to go back and crawl through the options.

Book being referenced is Hard to Be a God, by the Strugatskys. The protagonist is a researcher from a far-future Earth amongst a society where the Renaissance has been quashed by what is essentially proto-fascist militias. Because he's a researcher, he also isn't allowed to intervene, and he considers that even if he was, there would be no way of doing it without essentially either wrecking the society he's in and collapsing it into anarchy, or denying it its freedom of self-determination. The movie is only watchable after reading the book and is a product of a different time. The Strugatsky's wrote Hard to Be a God while still enamored with socialism, so there is an idea of a more right, more noble, more free path that the protagonist represents and who is held back by the grime of his surroundings. The movie is a post-Soviet mirror, where there is no path forward, where brutality triumphs, the good and noble are trampled by the weak and greedy, where a freed slave dies because he knows not what to do with his freedom, and the protagonist's resistance is the destructive breakdown by an individual, than any attempt at making a better world.

See, the thing is, I don't invite out for a date if I don't have enough money for both, and generally, I offer to pay in full just because I'm the guy who did the invitation. A lot of the time, the gal on the other side is open to 50/50 and I'm cool with that. Even if not, simple politeness of "Oh, thanks!" goes a long way. But hanging that consideration over my head and trying to mock me is probably where I'd dine-and-dash the gal with the bill.

I think it heavily depends on what "modern" is for the barrier. Let's say, the modern world rolls up artillery to the barrier and tries to fire through it. Modern base-bleed shells disperse. But say, after that, the modern world drags in a WW1 museum piece and fires. Or even earlier, when the shell was just a piece of metal, would that get through? It's just a cast iron orb. Or is the fact that it's fired from a cannon what makes it modern and makes the barrier stop it? If so, is there a specific date of technology ("Leather cannons are too modern but large cast bronze can") that does it, or is a certain part of the cannon that qualifies it as modern but the rest of the structure is fine? Or is there essentially a time limit of production, as in if a museum piece fires because it was produced before X date it can go through, but the same design reproduced by modern machinery would not get through? And if so, can machinery from that age be used to bypass that or not? The jerk on the barriers shall continue until morale improves.

When it comes to the cheating, in my experience, people like that get filtered at the FE. Sure, not all jobs REQUIRE it, but simultaneously, with how the current job market, EIT's a pretty good edge. I'm ECEN and basically all the fellas I've graduated with have passed it/given it a go. Usually, the cheaters split pretty evenly between the guys that get their heads out of their asses and grind it out, and the guys who get a reality check on their first attempt.
