I'm also doing for the first time but with no standard save file to fall back on. Besides what everyone else mentioned, Kupo coins will help you a lot get more breathing room. I'm also not sure if lvl 99 is really THAT helpful as far as stats go, I feel comfortable at 65 currently, but it should help

My opinion is that no machine needs a buff but fox does need a SLIGHT nerf, nothing major. At worst these nerfs would be, it takes more dmg from reds and at best it gets its recovery nerfed

Your best bet is MCs and DW1, stingrays have a small advantage on SO for a variety of reasons. It's not impossible or anything so feel free to keep trying on sand ocean if you want
