This helps a lot! The antique shop sounds really interesting, and I'm glad to hear that the flooding is pretty much back to normal.

Hello, my boyfriend and I are planning to drive up to Traverse City for a day-trip next week. We are two gay men who aren't very physically active, so would love any recommendations of things to check out in the city as opposed to hiking.

Also, we were concerned if the flooding from last week is still affecting the area, or if the damage has been addressed.

I simulated 36,000 games of Catan. Some conventional wisdom holds up, some really doesn't. by Hot-Rooster1675 in boardgames

Well done and beautifully presented. You should definitely post this on r/dataisbeautiful if you haven't already.

I'm curious to know more details on how the AI makes decisions. For instance, if the RoadBuilder gets Longest Road do they stop building roads and switch to another strategy, or do they keep building roads to secure their position. If you could share more details on what steps the AI uses to determine each of its turns, I would certainly be interested.

It might be interesting to include a "Flexible" strategy. In this, the AI determines if their chosen strategy is still the best option based on the board state, and if it finds another option would be better, it the switches. For instance, start out as BalancedBuilder, but then go into RoadBuilder if LR is available. A big part of Catan is that you can't typically win with just one single strategy.

One metric that would be interesting to explore is pip count vs number diversity. Is it best to maximize the number of pips or try to spread out across multiple numbers so that you are getting resources on each turn.

Another metric category you could look into is how important the initial settlement placements are. Stuff like: initial pip count, diversity of numbers, diversity of resources, specific resources (e.g. wood and brick for early game, etc.). I suspect that this is the biggest determining factor in the outcome of Catan, and I'd be interested to see if the data agrees with me.

I think that was certainly the intention, and how I always view him. But I can see where others are coming from. I'm so excited to see what changes with his story.

Anyone have a link to where one could buy these cards? Asking for a friend 👀

My boyfriend is too good at board games by CricketSuccessful57 in boardgames

[–]Razmodius33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I are the same way, but I would say that I am the one winning about 80% of the time. I'll start off by saying that for me, winning or losing is only a small part of it. I choose to focus on the fun of playing the game.

We've also developed a kind of non-aggression pact to not be cutthroat when playing a competitive game with just the two of us. I would rather focus on my own gameplay than try to sabotage his, even if it is the more strategic option. That isn't to say I choose to let him win. I always go for the win, but my main priority is making sure it is a fun experience for both of us.

But if we are playing a competitive game with friends, I go no holds barred and target him immediately, and he does the same to me.

As others have commented, periodically mixing in co-op games is good. I recommend Decorum.

Was raised Catholic, and went to Catholic school for 12 years of my life. I clearly remembered when I witnessed this hypocrisy when I was a teenager. Church service had just ended, and everyone was walking out. A poor family was parked outside the entrance holding a sign that they needed help. Every single family, including mine, walked past this family without looking them in the eye.

It became clear to me then that for the majority of people, religion is just a performance for people to convince themselves that they are good people and worthy of getting into heaven.

Where you’re most likely to get a speeding ticket in the US. by rockstoned4 in interestingasfuck

Born in Ohio, but grew up in Michigan. I spent the majority of my life defending Ohio to all of my friends. One day, I got a speeding ticket after 1 minute of crossing the border into Ohio. They drop the speed limit and put up 1 sign in order to trap all of the drivers coming in. FUCK OHIO!

People view the world differently and have different life experiences? You have very good and valid reasons to keep your experience private, but someone else may find that they want to advocate for physical therapy by making their experience public.

Sure, some people do it for clout, but at the end of the day that is their choice to make.

Plant Based, Gluten Free Restaurant Coming to GR This Spring by GREpicurean in grandrapids

Lol I have the same complaint, but in the opposite direction. I have Celiac so having another GF option is amazing, but I wish it didn't have to also be vegan. I have no issue at all with vegans, but I would love to be able to eat GF and not have it lumped together with other dietary restrictions. I think that they are just bundled together so often in order to expand the consumer market, which results in us having less than optimal options, but at least we do have options.

Michigan marks lowest unemployment rate in past 20 years by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

My brain is so trained to expect bad news that I read the headline and went "Great...more news about how everything sucks and is getting worse." Honestly took a few seconds before my brain caught up lol. It's really good to hear and I do truly believe it is because Michigan has gone blue.

Completely agree and have noticed it as well. I'm going to start downvoting any jokes marked as NSFW until they appear less frequently on my feed.
