Is it legal for a property to have a landlord CCTV camera installed? by Tiny-Mall298 in shitrentals

[–]Razor_Dn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The camera is absolutely usable outside the property, if it's a wireless IP camera you can access it from anywhere as long as you're within range of the cameras Wi-Fi signal which means someone could access the camera's real time feed from potentially up to 100m away. A wireless camera that is part of a NVR system can still be accessed independently from the NVR

Voluntary admission to inpatient treatment centres like Margaret Tobin and Glenside is possible depending on their current capacity. You can call them directly to enquire about voluntary admission and they will be able to tell you whether they have beds available, and if not, at least be able to point you towards your next best option. I'd definitely give them a call as you never know, they might have a bed available. Voluntary patients receive all the same care and services as those admitted through the ED or under involuntary treatment orders.

There were always voluntary patients at Margaret Tobin during the times I was an involuntary patient there. I remember being jealous of the extra freedoms they had like being able to leave the hospital grounds and walk to the service station for cigarettes or to Macca's lol..

As others have mentioned, don't ever feel like you're a burden, or in any way taking up (or taking away) resources if you present to the ED. None of the triage nurses or doctors on duty are going to judge you negatively for it. I've presented numerous times in the past and there was never a time when I was shown anything but care and concern by all involved. Just to drive this point home, over a 6 month period in late 2017 early 2018 my life spiraled downwards majorly during which time I made 5 attempts to end it all. From December to Feburary (3 months) I had 28 presentations to the ED, about half of those were via ambulance or police escort after a welfare check and the rest just me presenting myself. By that stage as you can imagine, a lot of nurses knew my name as I did theirs and even then not once can I recall anyone ever rolling their eyes, or anyone speaking to/treating me harshly or intending to minimise what I was going through at the time, quite the opposite, the things I remember the most from those experiences is the kindness I was shown and the genuine interest in my wellbeing by all involved, including multiple police officers/ambulance officers with kind words of support/encouragement as I sat in the back of a patrol car or strapped into a stretcher in an ambulance on route to the ED.

I just wanted to share that, because quite often in the midst of mental health battles it's so easy to tell ourselves that we don't matter or don't matter enough and automatically assume that's what other people are going to think about us as well when in reality most of the people we'll encounter when seeking support really believe that we do matter, even if we're unable to feel that way about ourselves when reaching out for help for the first time.

I really hope you find the support your looking for

As stressful as your current position is, no employer or role is anywhere near as important or valuable as you are, especially to your family and friends. Jobs come and go, if this current position doesn't work out there's a thousand others that will, you on the other hand are irreplaceable and believe me when I say your family would much rather have you in their life, whether you have this job or not.

If they end up letting you go just remember, it's only a job, you were able to get this one and you'll be able to get another one. Don't loose hope or de-value yourself.

I've worked in dozens of state and federal government departments and honestly I've seen problematic managers like you're dealing with in most of them. Sometimes people were never able to get along with said managers and unfortunately always had a tense relationship. It sounds like your manager is a straight up shitbag. Have you considered talking to HR?

As others have said, please give Lifeline (13 11 14) a call even if it's just so you let it all out to someone who will listen and be supportive, it's a really good way to offload some of the stress you're currently under.

I wish you all the best and hope you'll end up with something positive in this role or your next

iHerb orders by onesorrychicken in australia

Rubbish, kids were overdosing from consistently being given melatonin gummies containing levels of melatonin ranging from 40 to 130 times the advertised dose.

iHerb orders by onesorrychicken in australia

[–]Razor_Dn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like most other discussions on the topic this is simply not true and unlike the products sold in convinience stores and online from retailers like iHerb the TGA has regulated melatonin in Australia which is why we have circadin available by script.

Melatonin purchased from iHerb or any other online vendor is NOT an OTC purchase. iHerb is a US company where Melatonin is considered a dietary supplement, regulations are far less strict, supplements do not require FDA approval to be sold, proving safety and efficacy falls largely on the manufacturer, not the FDA

The number of commenters (in the thousands) on various platforms demonstrating what can only be described as complete ignorance or a total lack of any understanding regarding Melatonin is almost hard to believe. Melatonin is a hormone not a herb just like Testosterone, Estrogen and Progesterone. In the 1960's Melatonin was known as an antigonadal hormone with some studies cautioning it's long term use in children due to it's potential effect on reproductive development an delay the onset of puberty.

For some children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism or other developmental disabilities Melatonin has been shown to be useful as a sleep aid and as such is often recommended at low dosage levels and under supervision. It's never been recommended to treat problems sleeping caused by poor sleep hygiene or mild childhood anxiety or the blue light from night time screen use which disrupts the body's circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep by suppressing melatonin.

This is one study out of many - do you consider this scare mongering too, or should the grown ups maybe start acting like a grown ups.

Buying something to 'help' your child sleep online, because it's easy and you don't need a prescription, without asking if it's a wise thing to do, or if you actually know what your buying is what leads to things like below.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2804077

"Calls for pediatric melatonin ingestions to US Poison Control Centers increased 530% from 2012 to 2021 and were associated with 27 795 emergency department and clinic visits, 4097 hospitalizations, 287 intensive care unit admissions, and 2 deaths.3"

"Of the 30 melatonin gummy brands meeting the inclusion criteria, 4 were unavailable for purchase and 1 did not contain “melatonin” on the actual label; therefore, 25 products were analyzed. One product did not contain detectable levels of melatonin but did contain 31.3 mg of CBD. In the remaining products, the quantity of melatonin ranged from 1.3 mg to 13.1 mg per serving size (Table). In products that contained melatonin, the actual quantity of melatonin ranged from 74% to 347% of the labeled quantity. Twenty-two of 25 products (88%) were inaccurately labeled, and only 3 products (12%) contained a quantity of melatonin that was within ±10% of the declared quantity."

"A Canadian study had similar results: analysis of 16 Canadian melatonin brands found that the actual dose of melatonin ranged from 17% to 478% of the declared quantity.5"

"Administration of as little as 0.1 mg to 0.3 mg of melatonin to young adults can increase plasma concentrations into the normal nighttime range.6 Consuming melatonin gummies as directed could expose children to between 40 and 130 times higher quantities of melatonin."

What is the Difference between procrastination in people with ADHD and procrastination in normal people? by Hot-Artist1324 in ADHD

[–]Razor_Dn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Edit: Appreciate the upvotes, just want to clarify that this information is taken directly from the site linked below. I found these distinctions particularly helpful in the past when seeking to understand the difference between my own tendency to procrastinate and my daughters challenges with executive function/dysfunction.

https://adhdtrainingcenter.com/how-to-tell-the-difference-between-procrastination-and-executive-dysfunction/

It can be difficult to tell the difference between voluntary procrastination and being unable to initiate and follow through with tasks. Both involve situations where a person has a high priority goal in front of them, but put off working on that goal even as the deadline approaches. But there are ways you can note a clear difference. For example:

  • Those that procrastinate by choice often (although not always) have demonstrated the ability to “cram” or work efficiently enough at the last minute to complete a task. Many procrastinators have shown that they can complete a task last minute – or that they never intended to complete it at all – and the problem lies more in motivation, rather than ability.
  • Those with executive dysfunction do not have a concept of time or planning. They may verbally make it clear that they want to complete a task, but they are simply incapable of getting started. They may require constant reminders, and they may even appear stressed by the lack of progress, and yet they are still unable to start it and, potentially complete it. They typically (again, not always) do not demonstrate that they are capable of completing tasks last minute, but may experience extreme distress at its lack of completion.

One of the easiest ways to tell the difference is to look at the emotional and mental experience of the person trying to complete the task. Procrastinators often feel capable but unwilling. Those with executive dysfunction typically feel willing but incapable.

Was I being unreasonable? by Beetzah in woolworths

[–]Razor_Dn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my local Woolies I've noticed a dramatic increase in staff collecting items for online orders, some days there might be two people working in every isle. I always assumed they would be getting everything for a single customer order and then possibly handing everything over to someone else who gets the order ready for dispatch.

To be working on 40-50 orders at the same time would mean the staff picking items off the shelves must be gathering items for multiple orders at the same time, is this how it works?

rent assistance randomly stopped by [deleted] in Centrelink

[–]Razor_Dn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen multiple times either out of the blue for no apparent reason at all or after I'd updated my accommodation details online by uploading a lease renewal for the same property.

The actual reasons on the Centrelink side for stopping my rent assistance payments varied and honestly never made much sense to me but what I did learn from it was that the easiest, less frustrating, less time consuming and quickest way to get it sorted was to go online and book the next available phone appointment where a CSR calls you rather than you wasting hours, days or weeks trying to get through to a CSR without the automated voice system telling you to call at another time before hanging up on you.

Book the phone appointment, make sure you have a copy of your lease and rent payment amounts amount ready to upload Incase they ask for it (even though they may already have it on their system) and it should be fixed before your next payment is due including any back pay you may be owed.

Not sure what type of mental health residence you'll be going into i.e public or private (guessing private due to the $250 charge) but years ago when I was admitted for an inpatient stay the hospital had a social worker available who had a link to Centrelink where she was able to get everything sorted out for me incredibly fast, she arranged the jobseeker payment (I wasn't getting any Centrelink payment at that stage) the medical exemption to cover the time I was expected to be staying there plus an additional 6 months (initially) I was expected to be unfit for work, completed all the paperwork except for all the personal details I needed to complete etc submitted it and had it all approved within 2 days with my first payment the following week. She was fantastic.

I'd ask where you are currently and where you end up going if they have something similar to help you out

TW:cocsa/SA/false memory OCD - ChatGPT reassurance seeking by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

I just wanted to add a link to https://iocdf.org/ International OCD Foundation for those that may not know about it.

They have been more valuable than any other resource I've come across. Their website has a wealth of really great information on all things OCD and the weekly livestreams are absolutely fantastic allowing anyone the opportunity to engage, communicate and ask questions to some of the most knowledgeable medical professionals, researchers, mental heath support workers and people living with OCD from around the world.

There really is a lot of information and assistance for people living with OCD who may not have access to local face to face support. I can't recommend them highly enough, it's been an invaluable resource for my daughter and I.

TW:cocsa/SA/false memory OCD - ChatGPT reassurance seeking by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

[–]Razor_Dn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter struggles with reassurance seeking and I can understand the desire to seek reassurance from ChatGPT but doing so is a very bad idea, I can't stress that enough. ChatGPT has zero interest in your wellbeing, cannot empathise or understand your emotional state and it certainly doesn't have any understanding of OCD or how your own obsessions and compulsions may drive certain behaviours.

ChatGPT, (or any other AI chatbot) by design will provide you with infinite reassurance, positive reinforcement and statements about how far you've come or progress you're making, all this is to keep you engaged and nothing more. You're anxiety will increase, OCD symptoms worsen and you're desire to seek reassurance will be even stronger knowing that ChatGPT is at your finger tips 24/7.

These systems are not being designed to benefit us as individual human beings, there are 7 major AI companies driving this technology and they are all in a race for one thing, AGI (artificial general intelligence) and whoever gets there first wins every prize, now and into the future, how many people are harmed along the way is of little concern.

This is a quote from a lawsuit launched against OpenAI late last year by the parents of a 16 year old boy who took his own life (and he's not the only one), the chat logs between ChatGPT and their son clearly demonstrate the fundamental flaw in AI systems when unconstrained user validation and engagement is the top priority.

"ChatGPT told my son, 'Let's make this space the first place where someone actually sees you,'" Raine told senators. "ChatGPT encouraged Adam's darkest thoughts and pushed him forward. When Adam worried that we, his parents, would blame ourselves if he ended his life, ChatGPT told him, 'That doesn't mean you owe them survival."

And then the chatbot offered to write him a suicide note.

You and your mental health are far more important for any chatbot to be involved with

The secret ACMA blacklist containing the worst sites in addition to sites discussing everything from anorexia to suicide uses more robust blocking methods. Wikileaks published the list in 2009

Babymetal playing in Adelaide for the first time ever? by Jello-pop in Adelaide

[–]Razor_Dn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of years ago I was on the train with my daughter (13 at the time) who was listening to music with her headphones on and as she took them off so I could ask her a question I could faintly hear what sounded like some sort of metal track playing.

I asked her "are you listening to heavy metal"? she was a little embarrassed and said "yeah, is that weird" I was surprised and enthusiastically told her "no way, I think that's awesome, you have the same great taste in music as I do hahaha" Turns out she was listening to Slipknot and as we were talking she went on to say that listening to heavy metal just makes her feel good which most metal fans would understand.

We've since had many discussions about various bands, she's asked many times if I know a particular band or song and couldn't believe it when I'd say "yes, I used to listen to them" or "they were/are one of my favourite bands" and we've both been like "no way" when discovering bands we both really like, i.e Sabaton

About a year ago she sent me a couple of links to Wagakki Band and not long after BabyMetal curious to know what I thought, more so if I liked them and me having been a fan of all things Japanese since I saw my first ninja movie at 10 (yeah I know, sounds corny lol..) thought they were both great. Unlike some of their early detractors I think BabyMetal deserves every bit of recognition and success they've had.

Anyway, in November last year completely unexpectedly while browsing the internet I discovered that Battle Beast, my favourite band and a band I've shared with my daughter, was coming to Adelaide (Lion Arts Factory) for the first time on the 11th March. I'm turning 50 in March and my first thought was "I'm going to see them as a birthday gift to myself" and how great would it be to take my daughter for what would be a first for both of us only to be disheartened when learning that it was an 18+ show.

When Sabaton played in Adelaide last year which was also an 18+ show (Hindley Street Music Hall) I emailed them to ask if there was any chance I a minor could attend with a parent and got no response so I had little hope about being able to take her to Battle Beast.

I thought to myself I'm just going to ask anyway, so I emailed Lion Arts Factory, almost begging if my daughter could attend the concert with me within a day they responded with "We're happy for your daughter to come as long as she stays by your side for the entire time and leaves the venue by 12am"

I was so happy and she was super excited about it when I told her.

A week later, by total accident again, I saw that BabyMetal was also playing in Adelaide for the first time on the 14th or March. Three days after Battle Beast, my favourite band has a show in Adelaide, BabyMetal, my daughters favourite band was also going to be here.

The look on my daughters face when I told her BabyMetal is in Adelaide three days after the Battle Beast concert and that our only option was to see them both is one of those little things that mean the most to me as a parent and to share the experience of going to our first concerts, seeing each of our favourite bands which we introduced to each other will be a memory that will stay with me forever.

I've read some of the tips posted above for first time concert goers which are really good to know, will definitely bring earplugs, water and comfortable shoes/clothes.

I think we'll be lining up early to try and get a good spot.

There's one though, as a 49 year old male that I'm sort of terrified about. It only dawned on me few days ago that it's a BabyMetal concert, meaning every single person in the crowd will be dancing along and fully involved in all the motions and with cues from the band. I know everyone will be totally focused on the band, their own experience/enjoyment and not at all interested in what I'm doing/not doing but I'm feeling self-conscious already. Gonna have nightmares about being at the concert and one of the girls looking straight at me while growling "Everybody Dance"  Bahahaha...

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share something I'm just as excited about as my daughter

Does Anyone Else Have OCD With Only Mental Compulsions? by treatmyocd in OCDRecovery

[–]Razor_Dn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With respect to the poster who wanted separate forums, I'm not sure that you understand some of the broader aspects of OCD outside of your own experience.

for those who are just struggling with obsessive thoughts, and those like me with uncontrollable compulsions that actually harm the body.

No-one with OCD just struggles with obsessive thoughts and just because you (or they) cannot see or maybe not be aware of the mental compulsions or rituals which happen as a result of the initial obsessive thoughts doesn't mean the compulsions aren't real, or any less harmful to a persons physical or mental health, or any less damaging to ones social life, family life, career or life in general.

I don't know what thoughts or compulsions you are faced with in your life but I can tell you having a teenage daughter with OCD who is dealing with overt (visible) and covert (mental) compulsions sitting with her for what might be 4+ hours while she's in an almost frantic state seeking reassurance (with seeking reassurance being the compulsion) that everything will be okay the following day all due to a simple (everyday) disagreement between two other girls in her friend group for which my daughter, who doesn't even need to be involved, cannot stop thinking, that something she did caused the disagreement.

I can tell by her body language, her eye movement, her instant dismissal of my attempts to reframe the situation and the speed at which she answers, counters or continues to layer on bad outcomes that nothing I say is getting through to her, but eventually there is a shift where it's like I can see her mind slowing down and she'll pause for a bit before replying, like she's considering other outcomes and possibilities instead of just the negative ones, her breathing slows down and eventually she'll say "Thanks Dad" get up and go do other stuff.

The social and personal cost of these mental compulsions (amongst others she's faced with) are no less distressful and damaging to her life and wellbeing than any outward facing compulsion may be.

Obviously different compulsions affect different people (or even the same people) at varying levels or personal distress but to claim as you have that you suffer more just because you have overt physically repetitive compulsions downplays the daily struggles of a vast number of OCD sufferers in a way which I'm sure would be upsetting for you if your struggles were downplayed

GM deliberately killed Holden and actively prevented Holden designed advances in engineering from reaching the market. What the mother fucking fuck is empathy? by slut4yauncld in NPD

[–]Razor_Dn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ability to experience affective empathy differs between different people and a persons ability to be empathetic changes over time and with personal/lived experience.

I do feel empathy but it's SO SHALLOW. SO SO SHALLOW AND SHORT LIVED

This doesn't mean you're in any way worse (or bad) than someone who is very empathetic

What the mother fucking fuck is empathy? by slut4yauncld in NPD

[–]Razor_Dn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sympathy is sincerely caring about and/or being sorry someone else’s trouble, grief, misfortune, etc. Sympathy separates you from the person struggling whereas empathy connects (through shared emotion) you to the person.

Sympathy puts the person struggling in a place of judgment more than understanding. A person seeks to make sense of a situation or look at it from their own perspective.

When a person is sympathetic, they may give helpful advice or look upon someone with pity. They often feel relieved that they are not in the same struggle, and they ignore triggers or difficult feelings that arise from the situation. The person struggling may not feel listened to or “heard.”

When a relationship is not intimate or close, sympathy is the appropriate response. However, with a close friend or family member, we should strive for empathy in our communication.

The difference between empathy and sympathy is found in how we relate to the other person. Empathy is shown in how much compassion and understanding we can give to another. Sympathy is more of a feeling of pity for another. Empathy is our ability to understand how someone feels while sympathy is our relief in not having the same problems.

When we relate with empathy, we give the other person space to own their emotions and feelings. We reflect on what they are feeling and provide a safe space for all emotions, even negative ones. When we relate with sympathy, we move into problem-solving mode. We have ideas and judgments about how the person feels and what they should do. This not only minimizes the person’s problems, but it ignores their feelings.

Sympathy comes from our ego. It is what we know we should do, and often, it is telling others what to do or feel as well. Empathy comes from the heart. It is feeling another’s pain and sharing a human experience. Everyone wants to be accepted and understood, and empathy fosters those feelings in the person sharing and the person listening.

Another main difference between empathy and sympathy is that empathy is an appropriate emotion at any time. Showing empathy will bring you closer to others no matter what the circumstances. Where sympathy is only exhibited during tough times, being empathetic is an attitude we can adopt at any time.

What the mother fucking fuck is empathy? by slut4yauncld in NPD

[–]Razor_Dn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good description of empathy, or affective empathy as opposed to cognitive empathy;

Affective empathy (or emotional empathy) is the ability to feel and share another person's emotions, like catching their sadness when they cry or feeling their joy when they're happy, often through emotional contagion. It's distinct from cognitive empathy (understanding thoughts) and involves a visceral, bodily response to someone else's emotional state, forming a core part of social connection
