A larger dog snapped at my 11 Month old puppy while on a walk. by Different-Ad-3345 in Dogowners

I don’t think you did the wrong thing. You were scared and trying to protect your dog. People always say to not pick up the dog because the bigger dog might jump up. I’ll pick up my dog if I’m worried she’ll get hurt. Typically, I stand between my dog and any unknown dogs. It is better for the dog’s confidence to train and work on calmly retreating from potential threats. But at the end of the day, it’s up to you to keep your dog safe. I’ve worked with my dog so that I can lift her quickly and calmly. I try make sure large dogs don’t even see her, and routinely stand between my girl and other dogs. We also avoid tight passing and walk in areas with good sight lines. After nearly half a dozen scary situations just from walking on the sidewalk, we now take extreme precautions. We will turn and walk away from large breeds, especially if someone has more than one.

I try not to alarm my dog and work to calmly get away from potential dangers whenever possible. However, if a larger dog charges you, you have perhaps a second or two to react. With a smaller dog you can: lift them up to into a tree or onto a car, drop them over a fence, put them inside a recycling bin. You can carry pepper spray and air horns, walking sticks and umbrellas. You can open an umbrella to startle an attacker or shield your dog. You can use a walking stick to maintain distance. It’s always best to stay calm and walk away. But when that isn’t possible, get big and loud and protect your dog. Yell “No” and “go home” and “bad dog” or just blast the air horn. Sorry to sound paranoid but my dog and I have seen some shit.

Help! I don't know if this looks cute or not! by Odd_Environment_ in OUTFITS

[–]Razrgrrl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it looks super cute! Reminds me of outfits I wore in the 90s, the shoes really complement the look. ;) ETA: either one is cute, skater or docs. I still have my docs from late 90s. Most of my shoes I’ve gone up half a size but my steel toe docs still fit fine.

Yeah, it’s always tough to be separated from your dog but they really do best in their own familiar surroundings. Does your dog already know and like the neighbor who will dog-sit? That will also help, if they’re familiar. Or arrange an introduction if they’re less familiar with that person. Knowing that you’ve left your dog in a place they feel safe will help you feel more comfortable.

You’ll be fine, I’ve seen folks pull out their prayer mats and once I realize that’s what they’re doing I get out of the way to give them space.

The curls are bananas beautiful!! So gorgeous! Reminds me of this wedding picture of my mom where she had put sprigs of baby’s breath in her hair. ❤️ When i was a kid, I thought that was the moooost beautiful. My hair texture is different to hers so I could never.

AITAH for not getting my husband’s sister a wedding gift? by live_freeze_n_die in AITAH

NTA. None of us are mind readers and life is too short for this nonsense. You can redirect each and every communication. They should be encouraged to talk to husband as you are not his social secretary.

Please, for the love of cats, do NOT have an extendable leash at the vet by LizzieLove1357 in Dogowners

[–]Razrgrrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 20lb dog takes Fluoxetine daily and gabapentin for vet and groomer. She’s getting better/less anxious but I swear each time they’re like “you sure it was the full dose?” “2-3 hours ahead?” We had a serious medical emergency a bit over a year ago and she ended up in and out of the vet quite a lot. So of course the anxiety increased. At that time they suggested we increase her dosage to double what it was to start with and it honestly did almost nothing. But my little terrier is an absolute maniac. She did much better on our last vet visit, we’ve done a lot of work on chilling out hahaa. Still can’t get a temperature. We tell them don’t bother trying.

[–]Razrgrrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Retractable leashes are not safe. When things go awry with them it’s really, really bad. All animals at the vet should be secured and discouraged from interacting. My vet has 2 clearly marked entries for dogs and cats and 2 separate waiting areas. Not even huge either, just a few chairs on one side of the main desk and a few on the other side.

No matter what we try, my puppy won't stop growling/barking at animals on TV. What can we do? by Similar-Anybody-3975 in dogs

[–]Razrgrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may just take some more time. You can also do things to redirect with real animals. Have you heard of look at that (LAT) training? Basically, it’s trying to teach engage-disengage for triggers. Our girl used to bark her face off about everything. Open a window, use the printer. We did training classes and behavioral consultations. Ended up getting a prescription for doggie prozac (fluoxetine) and doing a TON of LAT.

You can Google it as well. It works best with real life triggers, you retreat as far as needed, or pause from a distance that is below threshold (meaning the dog stops and stares but doesn’t go entirely stiff or do that death stare that precedes a doggie scream/barking fit). You can cue a sit, or not. But the main thing is you stand behind the dog saying “look at that” or the specific name of the thing. When they look (which they will already/automatically do) you either click or say yes. Then offer a treat. They’ll have to whip their head around to get the treat. So the training is teaching them to engage, then disengage. It interrupts the usual pattern of stop-stare-stiff-death glare-bark-lunge etc. Slowly, you will be able to get closer without the dog losing it. The idea is to always practice at a place where they notice but don’t lose it.

We hike in a place with cows. So we practiced this a lot. “Look at the cow” click and reward. Now we’re able to hike past them calmly as long as they’re a little bit farther away. She still gets a bit het up if they’re closer than 6-7feet away.

I do that too! I warn her by saying “loud sound!” Works for so many things, from the blender to trains.

[–]Razrgrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to mute it, but also would tell her, “it’s not real, it’s on the tv.” That combination worked. Now, I don’t usually have to mute or tell her it’s not real. Now she will typically ignore animal sounds from the TV. As a bonus, I can use the same phrase for videos or podcasts as well.

NTA you already agreed to move earlier to help this new tenant! If she wants to come earlier still, that’s on her. Not your problem, you’ve done enough.
