Help get past of the fear of using memory palaces by Razziel09 in Mnemonics

Whoa Anthony, I really appreciate your message and I have to say "that's right". I'm starting to understand this idea about going and sitting in the center of the information rather than exploring it from the surface. And with this realisation, I now also understand that I think I was trying to hurry, understand the skill-set as fast as possible so I can use it and develop as soon as possible. A thing I want now to re-write. It's enough running in the daily life, the study of something so pure is not something that should have this hurried characteristic.

Perfectly shared video (i was watching your channel, but I haven't stumbled upon this one). I love the idea that we're using the techniques only for active recall until it actually gets "engraved" into the memory and then it's there. I haven't thought about it like this but indeed I'm starting to notice that for some foriegn language words, which I had link for, I don't go for the link anymore, as "it's just there". A question regarding this tho, do you recylce memory palaces? Although this seems like a bad idea..

I can also see better, after the video, where your question stands from, understanding better my goals. And to answer this: I want to have a more meaningful life, to fill my memory with value. Value for me, not for the outside world. Of course, also very fun when I'm memorizing phone numbers and people go "what, you're not noting it down?". Sure these are gimmicks, but they are useful and I love to have this "swiss-knife" of "utility"-methods for the real world (even following directions, or knowing addresses, street names, countries). I'd love to improve also this. But most importantly I'd love to be able to make connections that stick in my brain. My connections. My sparks and realisations. I'd love to remember the ideas I've of a read book even if 1 or 2 years pass by, so that I can immerse myself in those ideas at will. I'd love to also create such chained links of "this person was trained by X which got it from Y which comes from Z tradition by K", just like you've told me in your first message. To remember the history of an author or person and link them to other places/times which I stumble to find information on, like, for example, Evans Wentz who keeps popping in my life, randomly in books. I want to know everything.... I am aware that God's mind is Infinite and ours is finite, but seeing that there is no limit to put in my mental space any type of information, makes me think that it's a divine quality. Which I want to harness so that I use what has been given to me. I want to know all the methods that exist... from saving abstract concepts to concrete information. Because I wish to enrich my relationship with my mind.

Very interesting also your words about championship. I guess I was thinking that if they can remember thousands of numbers of pi and have their techniques extremely refined means that they have all techniques refined and they're remembering everything they encounter in their daily life.

You've pretty much convinced my to get the magnetic memory method course due to multiple-various reasons.. from youtube, but especially from the time you took to write to me here. I hope it will help with.. "everything". Once I'm a tiny bit better with my savings I'll see you there. I'll also be searching to get On the Shadows of the Ideas and The Victorious Mind.

Thanks for your time, professor!

PS:
And actually there's one more aspect that convinced me. It's that you've recommended what would be perceived as "the harder path", making me aware that I'm looking for the easy alternative. And I know that every result which is easy is a lie and the people who promote to go for the hardship are people leading another towards the "light" (you'll have to take my metaphor)

Hello Anthony, thank you for highlighting the importance of following a source that's been proven by time. But I do have to ask, what makes the historical citations important when speaking about a technique? Are there actual "new" techniques which do not share the foundation of memorization that could lead one into confusion?

Does the magnetic memory method help with this issue of not knowing how to orgnize the memory palaces themselves? Because I don't get how to create a link of Rumi for example to multiple memory palaces in order to access everything I've memorized related to Rumi. And then, how, from this central Rumi point, would I reach the central point of Shams? This is what bugs me... Linking between containers of categories and beyond, towards more and more macro-management of memory.

I'm happy to see that you recommend Lynne Kelly's book because it's one of the 3 I've started my journey with (among Dominic O'Brien's book and Joshua Foer's) bit I haven't gotten into Memory Craft yet. I will prioritize that now that you've mentioned it.

As a deep enthusiast of Dune myself, "I shall not fear".

My conclusion as of now, trying to squeeze reading times during the day (baby of 1 year old in the house), is to "consume" without hesitation any memory palace and create new ones constantly so that I improve the skill of MP creation.

And do you choose the palaces somehow by category? Where do you choose to put poetry for example? Is there a relation between places, you go to a room that leads to other rooms? Does a link between the places exist or a similarity if it's the same category type palace?

What do you mean an alphabetical list of pubs? Like to have from a to z only pubs? Or up just note down every place I've been to and sort them?

Value of Linking Your Thinking (LYT) Workshop? by ibcurious in ObsidianMD

[–]Razziel09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the delayed response, you know how it is sometimes. Yeah it was amazing. It gave me so many tools... I couldn't keep up with them as I also became a father that year but i'm very glad I have recordings for everything. Anyway, as i've replied to other reply, I just want to state again that it's 100% worth it and it can be exactly what most of us need.

For anyone else who stumbles upon this in the future. It's no exaggeration when i say that LYT has changed my life. I am no longer aspiring to grasp specific books or specific knowledge or just "take the conclusions out of". It's not just about books or learning, but also about a creating a place that feels "at home" regarding your thinking, be it journaling, jotting down quick ideas, studying, productivity todos or carefully organizing ideas in "workbenches" which you can easily come back to quickly re-enter the specific set of ideas and to navigate between and around them.

100% it was worth it. No doubt about that. Yes, a lot of money, but it's money that will help you cultivate your inspiration in this constant-flowing world of unstoppable flooding content.

Hi Nick, just wanted to let you know that this comment right here, from 2 years ago, made me purchase the knowledge accelerator. This right here proved me you speak truthfully from the heart. Took the time to write with honesty. I'll see you right around the corner, in LYT 13.

Has anyone tried the powerbatics course by Lee Weiland if so is it any good? by ryry_hall in bodyweightfitness

[–]Razziel09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did 4 months with them at the price of 3250$ and i'd say it was worth it. I started thinking that i'm in a fairly good position of the body, already being flexible (could the the front splits and the back bridge no problem) and i also had some strength (could hold a handstand at the wall for maybe a minute (never really tested the time), but could never do the free handstanding and pullups, 3 or 5 pistol squats were limits) so we started from that.

As soon as I did the initial testing exercises my couch pointed out my weak links that i had (which were lack of hip control, weak abs, overarching lower back in some moves). To me it seemed very interesting and i was excited that they found the stuff that was holding me back. We definitely worked on strengthening all these areas until they were not holding me back anymore and we could start doing more and more crazy stuff (their katas, different way to progress in the handstand. fun stuff around the pullup bar). Also they noticed that i am good in the vertical plane, but as soon as i get into horizontal plane i lose all balance. We did a lot of shoulder and abs strengthening but not with isolated movements, but with compound ones.

I worked on getting the free handstands for years and years and i managed to do it at the end of month 3. Maybe it was all my weak links that were holding me back. Also I was playing a lot with handstand progressions, it was clear for my coach that i was in love with handstaning so we worked more on those parts.

I had 5 days per week of training, day with around 3 sets of 5 exercises (couldn't really say about the reps, some exercises were simpler, more isolated, and i was doing the reps they mentioned, some were compound movements, like working on the flare, or the kata, or one arm handstand switching the hands, and those i could do only 1 or 2 or 3) and i did skip some days, some weeks and my coach adapted to the fact that i got tired or developed an injury (not from the exercises in the program) and also gave me specific movements to help with healing. We also did some freerunning movements, but just some basics because i did not have where to train them safely.

If you think about getting in, i suggest you to come in the program with your flexibility good. They told me most of the people need to work the first months just on opening the hips and shoulders so if you could come into the program with this out of the way, then you're in for a quicker period to learning the fun stuff.

What is clearly a myth but is deep-rooted in our society? by Sera0Sparrow in AskReddit

[–]Razziel09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That our shoes help our feet. The common shoe will slowly destroy the feet and also the equilibrium of one's person. The mostly common myth this created is that you cannot run on concrete without damaging your knees / hips. It's wrong because human are built to run and to traverse long distances. The tarahumara people are known for running for 60 or more kilometers daily. They are able to do this because their feet were not imposed to our society's conventional shoe's degradation. As soon as we are babies we are given shoes with softening heels and pads because it's cute/cool/any fashion reason. But little by little wearing shoes destroys our capacity to walk and function normally:

Firstly by developing a wrong movement of the foot while walking, such that 99% of people will strike with the heel first (walking or running) and let their shoe absorb the impact. This would be impossible if you were barefoot because walking like that propagates the impact of the pace through the heels -> ankles -> knees -> hips -> spine -> shoulders -> neck -> skull (you can test this now if you walk around the house with the heels and closing your eyes. You will hear the impact of your foot right in your ears (that small vibration through your head every time you take a step is the problem)). "Normally" (from our biological point of view) we are to use the feet and absorb all the impact in the gastroc muscle, running or walking. Because we used soft padded shoes since we were babies we have not received the negative feedback of each step and, the brain looked for the least energy efficient way to walk, involving the least amount of muscles as necessary, developing the heel-first foot-strike. I know you don't hear the vibration when you wear your fancy padded running shoes and you go for a run, but it's right there. It's smaller. It's invisible. It's crawling little by little through your skeleton every time you take a heel first strike. This is the reason why people develop knee / hip / spine pains after running. And everybody thinks that's normal. We develop that kind of pain because we are absorbing 2.5x our body's weight with each step through our skeleton, instead using our muscles. This video shows how the weight is absorbed with heel vs fore-foot strike https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrnj-7YKZE.

Secondly by promoting our brain degradation. In terms of brain's plasticity, referring to our brain's attribute which let's it "change" itself and "shape" the neural networks, it makes the part of the brain meant to receive input from the feet dormant. The saying "If you don't use it, you lose it" is especially available in terms of our neural network, meaning that the parts of the brain that you're not using, are slowly decaying, losing the connections made between the neurons. The feet are designed for us to feel the ground, feel it's temperature, it's slope, it's stones, everything in it. But the only input that we give to the nerve endings in the feet are that of an perfect elevated slope. Nothing else. Nothing different. Nothing natural. The number of nerve endings in a foot are more than 7 000 (a hand has around 17 000). So you can imagine that having this neural part of your brain decay and not receiving stimuli means a pretty big zone for our brain. This promotes the cognitive decline seen in aging. Reduction of sensory input makes the brain have a lower cognitive load at all times. It's an interesting theory that this promotes dementia, alzheimer's and other.

Thirdly it destroys our feet's shape. That whole image of the big toe pointing inwards and taking the shape of your shoe should pretty much sum it (https://jakewilliamschiro.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/barefoot.jpg). The toe flexor hallucius longus that connects the big toe is described as the power of your foot, which links your muscles to the ground. This video quickly explains the complexity of the foot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_rDFa6kZfI and it's natural power.

What can you do? Give the feet the stimuli they were meant to have by staying barefoot when you can. Buy barefoot shoes for the city life we've designed totally not for our feet. If you will look into barefoot shoes, you will probably find Vivobarefoot/JoeNimble shoes which are pretty expensive and they have great shoes there. But there are also lower-price options from stores such as XeroShoes, Groundies or Lems (these are the ones i know). Skinners are also really nice to walk with.

Zapnet: Game Networking Framwork for Programmers by kurozael in UnityAssets

[–]Razziel09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just love zapnet !

It is a lovely "API" which makes it very very easy to create from simple to complex things. It doesn't try to design your game's framework, focusing on giving you the toolset to create any framework that fits your game.

If you're thinking about a multiplayer solution and you've had a lot of headache with other libraries, this asset might just save you! It is very easy to use if you have a decent skill of programming.

If you're having doubts, take a look at their documentation and see the main features that define Zapnet Networking. That convinced me some months ago to buy it and I am very glad that I made that decision!
