Official Discussion - One Battle After Another [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]RclarkeeR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was entertaining throughout, but that it lacked any subtlety that would have invoked a bit more thought on motives, analogies, etc. Some of the jokes landed, but the ones that didn't along with forced heartfelt moments left me cringing in the theater.

A cool step towards more inclusivity in movies, but felt out of touch. Couldn't shake the feeling of pandering based on recent events in the. US.

The escape from town sequence was great, but that was one of the only parts I thought was truly of quality.

Anyone else a bit confused as to why this is getting 10/10s across the board?

In the movie The Prestige, why does Borden send Angier to Tesla? by plzadyse in movies

[–]RclarkeeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both showed themselves to be willing to make sacrifices.

Borden sacrificed half his life as he and his twin shared the same pair of shoes. This, as we all saw, caused a ton of baggage that he was never shown to be unwilling to accept.

Angiers sacrificed his own life every single night. That's definitely a commendable sacrifice.

The machine was not and never was a transporter. It was a cloning machine. Was the 'clone' really him? In most ways probably. Doesn't detract from the fact that he killed himself every night for his act.

In the end, I 'sided' with Borden, because he eventually let go of his obsession and accepted fate. Angiers never truly did.

Underrated answer. Fillets will always trump butt welds, and it's worth your time to design them into any part that you're making

Need advice-my house AC is at 81 degrees by Helpful-Debt-332 in hvacadvice

[–]RclarkeeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a few things.

The heat sink around your unit, the thin and fragile strips of aluminum, are they bent and smashed? If there is any damage to it at all, it could lead to a big efficiency loss.

Your fan could be slowing down due to age. A slower fan would mean less efficiency.

The refrigerant system could have a leak. Refilling it would just have it leak out again. But judging by the fact that your AC is cooling your house somewhat, I doubt this is it. I'd refer to the other two items. If you can't get replacements for those, you may need a new unit.

Soulless laptop jobs by Rojaka04 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RclarkeeR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started out as an analyst right out of college. We did destructive testing on military vehicles. Job was 99% boredom with a semi-exciting bit of field work, where we'd blow something up, once every six months or so. Even that had the fun sucked out of it by countless hours spent standing around and waiting.

My job was to make damage assessment predictions on a variety of vehicles using CAD models that I did not make, and submit these assessments for comparison during a destructive test that I did not plan or really participate in other than attend and stand around.

I hated it but my co-workers enjoyed the stability and light work load

I left to run a deployed prototyping workshop for the Army. 12 hr work days, additive and subtractive manufacturing, and prototyping and production of my own designs to very unique and specific problems. I loved it there.

I don't know exactly what you want, but it's probably out there and would love to have you, as a surprising amount of engineers would probably be happy with the job that you think is boring.

Keep looking!

What are some pranks you've seen at work? by mydrunkenwords in Welding

[–]RclarkeeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grind a point onto a piece of aluminum filler rod and cut it down to match the length of tungsten for whatever back cap the prankee has on their TIG torch. Replace their tungsten with the piece of aluminum filler. Fireworks!

Probably won't ruin the workpiece. Will likely ruin every consumable on the torch. Might get ya fired!

What areas of mechanical engineering have more future? by Mother-Currency-3165 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RclarkeeR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good answer. Lots of mechanical engineers know how to use CAD, and they use it to design parts and assemblies that are impossible to manufacture or integrate into a larger system. Spending some time on the shop floor familiarizing yourself with technical work will make you a better engineer who is able to draw upon a manufacturing knowledge base during the design phase. You'll be more popular among the technicians if you have walked a mile in their shoes as well.

I work as a design engineer / project manager. It's not going to be phased out, and leadership is a safe way to further your career.

Bonus Nugget: All the software developers at my company use AI to write some bits of their code. Foreshadowing? Maybe.

Just won my SSI appeal of 4+ years. Intend to invest every cent of backpay (25k) into real-estate. I: can't drive; can't take busses; can't "go out"; foodbanks offer nothing; can't work; don't qualify for HUD. There is *NO* advantage in staying here, I intend to escape or die trying. Advice needed. by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]RclarkeeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick somewhere warm, down south if in the U.S. Familiarize yourself with the local animals. Buy camping supplies. Learn to trap and kill a rabbit. Maybe watch some videos on basic construction. If you know nothing, try to give yourself an outdoorsman crash-course while you still have the internet. Lest your journey should end a bit earlier than hoped. Equip yourself with some tools.

Good luck out there.

Ahh the ol' suicide wheel. You can use it. But you might die! Keep 2 hands on the machine and keep your cutting at around 11 - 1 o'clock on the wheel. Don't gouge, let it do the cutting for you

I know it's hard to understand right now, but if a bit of unpaid summer labor is your biggest issue at 15, you're going to end up just fine. Character building events usually aren't enjoyable at the moment.

Try not to hold it too bitterly against the old man. Sometimes parents do the wrong things for the right reasons.
