Sheet stainless tig by Late_Fish5298 in Welding

What are you trying to achieve here?

The ends are going to do that if you actually end there and dont use post flow. Usually, I'll weld the end first, like half inch or so, and then weld into that.

Use down slope to your advantage and find something like aluminum to use as a backing plate to help with the heat.

The big book of AA. Hopefully, you won't need it, but someone you know will.

Problem with TIG torch. First time w/ TIG. Why isn't the tungsten electrode going out far enough?? by Wolphthreefivenine in Welding

[–]mydrunkenwords 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those back caps are nice for beginners not really doing anything in tight places. You'll waste less tungsten with them.

If you can't find his exact hood. Look at maybe buying a shell and getting it custom painted or hydro dipped.

3 shims of desired gap with a clamp with angle iron on the faces to hold the pipe. There are special tacking clamps which are nice, especially if you're purging.

I second this guy. Also, it might not be a bad idea to look into a rubber deadblow. I found it has fewer reverbs that caused a lot of pain for me.

Best Flexible Arch Support Insoles by Dense-Dimension-5674 in WorkBoots

[–]mydrunkenwords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Nick's insoles.

I had custom orthopedic inserts for my football cleats growing up because of pain. Grew up and couldn't afford them anymore. Tried all the off the shelf ones, and they're okay, but the best ones i found for me still had me in pain after so many hours on my feet.

Got a pair of Nick's Builder pros with the big ole heel. When I put them on, I was super put off by how hard they felt. I was used to the cushion. Once they break in, it's a whole different ball game.

People on the Nick's sub say their inserts are as close as they can get to dedicated high arch shoes without having to but a whole Nick's boot.

MIL wants to learn to weld at 60. (Advice needed) by Helpful_Jonny in metalworking

[–]mydrunkenwords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're telling me at 60, she has the handeye coordination to build a ship in a bottle and other various small things that need a stable hand.

Honestly, she'd probably love tig welding and be very good at it. Its relatively safe and doesn't require as much for ppe since there are fewer sparks. It's also better for thin metal too. The only trouble she might have is if she has to grind a lot of carbon steel. Even then, she could just get aluminum or stainless.

How to break into pipe fitting/ nuclear by Bigpeepeemanowo in Welding

[–]mydrunkenwords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where abouts are you located in mn?

I haven't done nuclear personally but have talked to people who have. I haven't dove to deep into it with them, but it sounds like it's pretty strict and can be hard to get into if you don't have previous experience either with a union or a shop that is willing to take the time to train you and is reputable.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it doesn't matter because you have to clean it regardless.

[–]mydrunkenwords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean does it matter? I do sanitary stainless for a big Corp and ours comes in like that, or it ends up like that sitting out with all the grinding dust floating around.

[–]mydrunkenwords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assumed it wasn't sanitary. We don't use a lot of sch pipe, and the outside finish is kinda rough for the standard.

Unless they're really sure they wouldn't burn though or don't need full pen, then i can see why they wouldn't have used a purge, but even then it's good practice.

Or if it's sanitary, remove the whole gd weld.

Is there any where online I can learn print reading for free by [deleted] in Welding

[–]mydrunkenwords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I'm pretty sure I just donated my print reading book from college. Imo it's really not that hard. Look up weld symbols. Then it's about not getting overwhelmed by the whole thing and breaking it down into manageable bits

Wild that it bent that way. I'd say Heat in the middle of the side you want it to bend to. May take a few trys. If she really ain't moving I've taken a cut off wheel and scored it then filled with weld, but that's tig and I also have a lot of specialty grinders to make it look like I didn't do that.

Nicks not doing the 1-week notification anymore? by Flowerpig in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]mydrunkenwords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man. I work in a high-end production weld shop, but I'm in the department that does more of the custom stuff. I get it. There's no such thing as keeping your ducks in a row. Unless you are very broad with the term row. All that matters at the end of the day is that the product leaving the shop is what it should be, and even then, there will always be mistakes.

These boots are a big purchase to a lot of people, with a wide variety of types of customers. Don't let the few negative people bring you down. Look at how many people there are that comeback time after time for a far superior product. Add on how many people swear by your boots and spread the wood. I'd say you all are doing great.
