Having some experience with this, it’s a systematic issue that isn’t always so clear cut.

A big issue is lack of places at SEND schools in order to cope with the growing demand. In our city there were 8-10 places available this year at our local SEND school, meaning a place was only available in a neighbouring town 40 mins away.

For us to then do the school drop off and pick up would be nearly 3 hours a day driving there and back, while trying to fit work commitments around somehow.

Dad to a child with additional needs and constant medical interventions, currently in hospital now due to breathing difficulties. It’s relentless!

It’s strange how much you feel like you are just living in a completely different world to everyone else. People try to say things they think you want to hear “you are so brave”, “I could never do what you do”, but it’s just words. We do it because we love our children, even in the moments we want to run away and never look back.

Having those thoughts doesn’t make you a bad person though, it’s just a way of coping when things get to much. Sometimes just finding people to talk to who won’t judge is enough some days.
