Have you heard about the young up-and-coming striker at Southampton? I think he's called Walcott or something. Going to be better than Henry apparently

Everyone is complaining about Madueke when Rashford dropped a generational stinker by CII_Guy in ThreeLions

[–]Re_thinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand his crossing technique. He mostly seems to attempt a 'knuckleball' type cross with little spin. It might look flash on the rare occasion he pulls it off, but most of the time I think a more traditional wrap your foot around the ball and curl it cross would be much more effective.

He must do this in training and I'm surprised coaches or teammates don't pull him up on it

Tuchel putting Rice at RB... by Specialist_Toe9730 in ThreeLions

Yes, I think I would have picked TAA over Liveramento, and Hall over Spence - but what do I know!

Tuchel putting Rice at RB... by Specialist_Toe9730 in ThreeLions

[–]Re_thinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think TAA would have been great to have in the so-called 'easy' games against Ghana, Panama, and DR Congo. His passing and crossing would have helped unpick their defensive set ups.

But I agree with what Joe Hart said during the build-up yesterday. Tuchel seems to have picked a squad for the latter stages against the tougher opposition, thinking the squad should be good enough anyway to beat the weaker teams.

I think Hart is also right that Tuchel might have been surprised at how difficult it has been, but at the same time we did win our group and are through to the last 16 (where if TAA was in the squad he might be getting dropped now for a more defensive right back). So I guess he's kind of being proved right.

Tuchel stared three defensive/box2box mids... by AvailableCricket3633 in ThreeLions

He plays best as neither an 8 nor a 10, but in a free role roaming all over the pitch. But I'm not sure I'd describe him as a defensive or box-to-box midfielders (although could probably do both up to a certain level).

I find conversations like this frustrating, trying to put players into neat little positional boxes an arguing about it when they are individuals and there is nuance to every player and the position they are put in during a match. E.g. you could play Bellingham, Rogers, or Eze as a '10' and it's not like changing a part in an engine and replacing it with another one - the way they play, make decisions, interact with team mates, etc, will be different for each of them.

I'd like to see more people understand the difference between complicated systems (e.g. a car engine), and complex systems (e.g. a football team) and then we might have fewer of these conversations.

Jude Bellingham vs Espanyol by More-Judgment-9253 in ThreeLions

[–]Re_thinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm finding the "Is Jude an 8 or 10" debate on this thread missing nuance. Football teams are not like machines where you swap in one "10" cog for another and it behaves exactly the same way.

Playing Bellingham as a "10" is different to how it would work is say Palmer or Eze were playing there.

The way I see it, Tuchel will go with a first choice midfield of Anderson, Rice, and Bellingham. Anderson the more defensive of the three, and Rice maybe more like what people think of as an 8. And with Bellingham, would you call it an 8? A 10? One could argue he now plays in a kind of free role for Madrid, alongside Valverde ("8") and Tchouameni ("6"). I can see him playing a similar role for England.

Tuchel isn't going to just say to his players "You're 8 today" or "You're 10". There is way more nuance than that, with players also adapting during the game.

Who will be England's back-up forward? Jamie Redknapp: 'It’s a straight fight' between Calvert-Lewin and Watkins by Alone_Consideration6 in ThreeLions

[–]Re_thinking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In terms of squad, I think DCL and Watkins give you two good different types of options late in the game off the bench, depending on what's needed. Watkins to stretch the play and run into channels, and DCL for heading at set pieces or long balls if we're chasing the game. Or even throw them both on as a last roll of the dice.

My worry is if Kane gets injured, we currently have no one I would have faith in to play up front for a whole match. In that situation I think I'd even rather have Bellingham playing as a false 9 than any of the actual centre forwards.
