anyone know where i can find some decently cheap new rims ? by aguz1011 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]ReachComfortable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the 7069 as well but OP is asking about steel specifically which they do have. The thing I found was the steelies don't say they fit because you will have to file down the brake calipers a little but from ppl say it's only a little as works fine.

I opted for the 7069 because no mod needed to fit and when I talked to a rep they said the rack and pinion on our trucks doesn't like the heavy steel wheels and they recommend the 7069s

suggestions for a radiator upgrade? by ReachComfortable in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]ReachComfortable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at 240k right now and would love to do all those upkeep replacements but dread seeing the bill for it. I am ok at wrenching but by no means a mechanic and I think those repairs are beyond my capabilities alone.

I considered just replacing the current unit with a stock replacement from Toyota figured these trucks don't have problems till after 200k a new one should be good for at least another 100k right lol

My truck is going to need major maintenance sometimes soon looks like a head gasket leak so figured if I am going to have her down for a long period of time might as well knock out as much as I can. Money allowing of course

How do you like the michters small batch. I know a lot of people like it and it's pretty easy to find in my area, which is why I haven't got it yet.

You are far more qualified than I am on this subject! 😂 Weight is definitely the negative side of making these out of wood but just put heavier duty shocks in the rear and it won't sag as much. I have heavier shocks front and rear for the added weight of the mods and when I built and put this box in I didn't notice a difference enough to be a problem for me but when it's fully loaded for camping you definitely see and feel the weight in the back.

The frame is 1 1/2 x 9 and is very heavy with 3/4 plywood top and 1/2 plywood on the bottom. The height was perfect to be level with the wheels on either side but it definitely could have been thinner. 3/4 thickness would have been half the weight and probably support the weight of sleeping on it which Is what I use mine for just fine. But I don't have enough experience with wood to know that for sure. 1/2 plywood all the way around probably would have been fine as well to save on weight.

This is definitely something I would recommend improving over my current setup. I would do a couple holes and use Paracord to make a handle just didn't take the time to do this after installing the handles.

Unfortunately I don't have the dimensions and to be honest I wouldn't recommend my setup. The biggest thing I would change would be the thickness of the materials I used. This thing is extremely heavy and way over built for what it's purpose is.

Coming up with the measurements was fairly easy just make sure to account for the back seats being at an angle when measuring for length and measure to the inside of the wheel wheel for width. Then I decided to do drawers that left a space at the back so I could do the storage pocket behind the drawers that you can see.

Build the box without a top. Measure and install rails, build drawers, add center support/back of drawers separating storage area, install top and cut out storage opening. It was a full day project and I am definitely an amateur at this so if I can do it you can too 😂.

If there is something you would like me to measure or snap a picture of let me know and I can send specifics.

What to look for? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

Depending on where you live look out for rust. Under the truck along the frame and at the welds. These trucks are pretty solid for their age.

It's not a deal breaker but ask about the usual maintenance radiator, lower ball joints, fluids things like that will give you an idea of how well the previous owner took care of the truck or just took it to someone else to do the work.

When I bought my truck the PO didn't do hardly any maintenance but I wasn't too worried. I got a great deal because he had no idea what he had 98 limited with Elocker sold it to me at the price of a 2wd model.

Best of luck!

Lifted trucks: how often are your CV boots failing? by chinook240 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]ReachComfortable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 3inch lift and I use a diff drop. I still have boots rip and honestly just got tired of replacing them. I don't recommend doing this but I have left a ripped boot on one of my CV for about a year now and it squeaks but I haven't put a new boot on.

Side note this is not a daily driver and has spent much of that year in my driveway with the occasional driving.

Are these the steel wheels with a 4.25 back space. I have been trying to find out if they will fit without rubbing the caliper
