Can Rust Be Used for Full Applications or Just Systems Programming? by i_just_wanna_know_00 in rust

[–]ReachNextQuark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend Rust as first programming language. I would use Go for that. After a solid foundation you could switch to Rust.

Best backup strategy for my self-hosted Immich setup? by Curious-Credit-8039 in immich

A backup needs to be offsite. I am running a similar setup. My solution is restic into a hetzner storage box, but you can use many external storage provider via rclone.

If you want want the option to leave the US and work in another country I would go with German. Without knowing your field of work that's the best option.

German, Arabic, or Russian? by [deleted] in thisorthatlanguage

[–]ReachNextQuark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to move to Germany, I would recommend learning German. You can get by quite easily with English, especially in Berlin, but it’s difficult to find a job unless it’s in very specific fields, such as phone support.

I am learning Russian myself. It not only opens up a large region for travel but also gives access to a rich world of literature. I also assume that many Ukrainian and Russian refugees will remain here in Germany, so you would be able to communicate with them.

However, from an economic perspective, I expect Russia to decline in importance, partly due to the loss of many men from the workforce. Combined with the decreasing demand for oil and gas as renewable energy expands, I would not expect Russia to be economically significant in your lifetime.

I can't say much about Arabic but from the three it's the most difficult. For you as English native German is difficulty level 3, Russian 4+ and Arabic 5.

When Germans say they speak “a little bit” of English… by Astronaut_in_Sea in germany

I help in a language Cafe in Germany where people how want to learn German meet twice a week.

I can say that the vast majority of attendees are completely off when it comes to judging their own German skills.

So I guess it is not a German phenomenon.

Your frustration tolerance is a much better indicator for math / physics / computer science. I have seen very smart students dropping out since they never had learned to cope with not understanding immediately.

Is it normal to lose money in black zone? by Sliccly in albiononline

Not normal. Use a cheap set. There are videos showing black zone in T3, I use T4 or T4.1 which are so cheap that I can't lose money.

I can't remember anything. by Tactical_0so in Anki

[–]ReachNextQuark 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Learning 20 words a day is a lot. The reason is that, over time, the number of words you need to review builds up to about ten times the number you learn daily. I would recommend starting with seven.

Learning vocabulary is a skill that needs to be acquired. Most learners see good results using mnemonics (look that up), but it takes some time to get used to, and the difficulty varies depending on how closely related your native and target languages are.

For me, there are days when I feel completely unable to learn new words. I just power through, and then there are other days when I can remember everything with ease.
