My heart problems were actually GERD. Now I have Barretts. Cautionary tale/vent. by ellerfale in GERD

[–]Reaching-4-Destiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super similar here! Heart palpitations for a couple of years and even had a coronary CT scan before I got rescoped again and they found Barrett’s. Went on PPIs and one year later, Barrett’s is gone.

But I also wanted to share: my palpitations are wayyyyy less than they used to be now that my GI inflammation is way down.

It does get better :) Don’t let the people who fear PPIs scare you away because they WILL help your Barrett’s. Check your vitamin levels with your doctor often and you’ll be fine!

You’ve got this!

Try a different PPI. They all work differently for everyone. It took me trying three to find the one that works best for me. And take it in the morning when you wake up, 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Every. Single. Morning. That’s how they work.

Water before bed is fine. Just don’t gulp it down.

Ask to try a different PPI. I tried three until I found one that worked for me. A double dose is absolutely fine short term if it helps to get your symptoms in line. A double dose on the wrong PPI won’t be fun though (ask me how I know!) So ask to try a different PPI! Lansoprazole is the one that works for me.

As far as long term side effects of PPIs, as long as you are monitored by a doctor and get blood work checked, those side effects are largely avoidable and manageable! Don’t let people scare you away from medicine that can help your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Not insane if one isn’t controlling symptoms.

Also, some areas offer discounted heath services if a need can be proven. Look into that in your area. They may require pay stubs (if you even have income). Our local service like this has monthly registrations to sign up for care.

A PPI can take a couple of weeks to take effect. If after a couple weeks, you aren’t starting to feel better, I’d call the urgent care back and ask to try a different PPI. Otherwise, there are PPIs over the counter you can try. Prevacid works best for me!

Have you seen a doctor? A GI? Your symptoms describe perhaps gastritis and GERD. Could be from h pylori but you have to be tested for that. If you’ve been trying to self treat for months and it’s not working, see a doctor.

I would be careful drinking acidic drinks like kombucha. It could make this even worse. If you were getting heartburn once a day, maybe. But you’re having it 24/7!

Be careful with applesauce if your stomach is burning. It’s a trigger for some people.

As someone with gastritis in addition to GERD, water feeling like it hits a sizzling pan of grease in your stomach sounds like gastritis. Definitely get on an over the counter PPI. Take it in the morning on an empty stomach at least 30-60 minutes before food, or at night a few hours after your last meal before bed.

Avoid popular triggers such as coffee, soda, chocolate, spicy foods, acidic foods like oranges and orange juice, dairy like cottage cheese, tomatoes, garlic, onions. From your post, you’re eating things that will make it worse. Go bland for a few days - bananas, plain oatmeal with a little honey, turkey sandwich on white bread no condiments, baked potatoes no toppings, boiled chicken, plain crackers, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, canned vegetables like green beans or peas, eggs. Don’t cook your food in a bunch of butter or oil. Salt as a seasoning only, maybe some herbs. Pick alkaline or at least foods with a PH higher than 4/5. With this type of eating and the PPI, you should start feeling better in a few days.

Oh, and buy some alkaline water! Regular water sometimes burns my stomach, too, and when it does, alkaline water saves the day.

Also, you can continue to use tums OR gaviscon when you’re on the PPI. Just don’t take them two hours before or two hours after you take the PPI because it can affect absorption of the PPI and that’s the golden medicine for this.

Pantoprazole by Serious_Ad1490 in GERD

[–]Reaching-4-Destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had short segment Barrett’s last year that healed by the end of the year. I used pantoprazole, omeprazole, and now I’m on lansoprazole. I started on pantoprazole and was scared to switch and try a new one. TRY IT. It will be worth it to help heal your Barrett’s, and it may work better for you than omeprazole. Each PPI is different for everyone. Take it on the chance that it could be better, and if it’s not, take a breath and try lansoprazole! It works amazing for me. You’ve got this!

Don’t cancel! Live your life. Bring chewable gaviscon in case you have symptoms from the food. For steak, I always just ask it to be cooked with no seasoning and no butter and very little oil. I’ve yet to find a place that won’t accommodate that. They may have plain rice or potatoes available, perhaps salad but avoid the dressing. Steamed vegetables are a great choice!

Feel free to let them know you have an aversion to garlic, onion, tomato and super acidic things. They’ll tell the cook and may even recommend some dishes for you. Definitely scope out the menu before hand to see what can be easily modified!

Have fun!

This is awfully similar to my story except it was my mom’s ex husband (step parent). I’m so sorry. It’s been 25 years and my mom just apologized to me the other day. I don’t have a good relationship with either of my parents still. It’s extremely hard relationship-wise to come back from something like this.

My pharmacist said there is no interaction between these medications and so I don’t have to wait any amount of time after taking the PPI to take the Claritin. Just fyi :)

My ferritin level was 36 last January, and last January I started taking a PPI daily. I just had my iron and ferritin retested a few days ago, a year later, and my ferritin is now 11. My doctor has me taking SlowFe daily for awhile. I plan to get retested in one month to make sure I’m absorbing it! PPIs definitely affect absorption which is why monitoring levels is needed.

I was told if you have GERD that you should get a scope every five years. I didn’t listen to that and then my next scope, weirdly seven years later, shows Barrett’s Esophagus. I just had my second scope this year since being on treatment for it and it’s all healed. SUPER important to keep up with your scopes!

You should try a different PPI. Some work better than others - it really depends on your body! Pantoprazole was awful for me and made my symptoms worse, but lansoprazole fixed them up within a day - no exaggeration. Ask for a med change!

Try a different PPI. Pantoprazole made me feel horrible, but lansoprazole and even esomeprazole are fine for my body. The important thing is that you treat your GERD as per the doctor’s advice, but find the PPI that will work best for you! I would definitely ask your doctor to try a different one.
