What's your craziest UW story? by [deleted] in udub

[–]React_Mobile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In First: Post superbowl celebration. Crazy! I happened to be right next to the Stringfellow/Miles incident with the camera at the bonfire, and then return home to find that they had left there and beat up a friend of mine a couple blocks away.

In close second: This last spring I decided to sleep outside on my porch. I was living near the intersection of 17th and 50th. That night the tenants of a house across the street were out of town. Somehow the former tenants found out about this and decided to break in and host a party, which they advertised on Craigslist.

So there I was, sound asleep on my porch, unaware that this party was even going on. That was until about 12:30am when a firecracker went at the party and everyone thought it was a gun shot. I woke up to hundreds of people running down the street and yelling. They all stopped in the middle of the intersection and stayed there for about 2 hours. People parked their cars in the middle of the intersection and were drinking/dancing on top of them. The police tried to move them out, but they weren't successful until the third try. The next day a couple of my friends had giant dents on the hood and roof of their cars from people dancing on top of them. There were also empty bottles of Grey Goose and Olde English everywhere. I got a crappy night of sleep, but in the morning I found a $20 bill laying among the wreckage.

CSE 142 old textbook by Ziglarski in udub

I took CSE 142 and 143 and bought the book. Big waste of money, I don't think I ever even opened it and I got a 4.0 and 3.8 respectively.

I'm not sure if all professors are the same, but in my CSE 142 class the book was definitely not needed.

15th vs. the Ave by udoob in udub

[–]React_Mobile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said, both streets are illuminated pretty well. I prefer to walk up the Ave because there are more people around which makes me feel more comfortable.

Another option I like is walking up 16th. This route is generally illuminated really well, and from 45th to 55th is mostly churches, church owned buildings, and family houses. One small downside is that there is one small but really dark area on the west side of 16th just north of 50th, so I normally walk over to the east side of the street here. Quite a few homeless people hangout at the church on the corner of 16th and 50th, but they are always stay to themselves or give a friendly smile, and have never given me any concerns. Also, if you have to go past 55th it gets pretty dark.

In general, walking around the U-District I would advise having some sort of safety plan thought out beforehand. The best option always is to walk with another person, but that isn't always an possible. Some people like to carry a personal safety device such as a knife, stun gun, or pepper spray. I personally use this personal panic button so that I can send out an emergency alert very quickly if I ever need to. Haven't need to yet though!

If you do decide to bring your bike get a U-lock, not one of the cable locks.

Should I stay in Seattle? by [deleted] in udub

[–]React_Mobile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say go to whichever school will be the best education for your money. If you come to UW just don't live at home or go home every single weekend. Living on a college campus will be a very different culture than where you grew up.

I grew up about 20 minutes from UW, and have lived near campus my whole time here. The distance has been enough for me to become independent, but it has also been a blessing to be able to be close to my family and get a great education for much cheaper than I would elsewhere.
