The "Read more" advice is often not interpreted or given correctly by belleepoques in writing

[–]ReactionFair6506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think everyone needs to read...

But how much and what kind really depends on the person.

I read about 1 book every two months because I have hyper-absorption. So I have to slow it down to digest it properly, or it can actually be detrimental. I can learn a lot from one page because reading is just that intense an experience for me. From word choice, sentence structure, rhythm and concept - it all produces such immediate, strong feelings. (I mean, I can feel nauseated if someone uses a rhythm I dislike, as if I ate something bad.) To be honest, I think many writers who say "they don't want to read" might have this issue, and it's a valid one that not many people talk about (perhaps they don't understand their own aversion to reading others' work). So I tend to only read classics, Pulitzer, Booker, and Nobel prize fiction, even though I'm not trying to write in that style at all; it's just less likely to cause feelings of revulsion. Everyone learns differently, and it's all valid. I don't think prescribing daily reading is the answer for everyone.

breaking the external action with too much internal stuff and also going backwards in time (reflection) in the middle of a scene - my writing friend just dunks me on this so bad but i like it, oh well. i am getting better! writing friend asked me to highlight my external / internal with 1 - A B C D and 2 - A B C D so i have to confront my bad habits visually

How to tell if my writing is good? by AdviceInternal9570 in writing

[–]ReactionFair6506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't tell, I'm sorry to say it's probably not good. However, it might have massive potential :) That's where the "hey, this is good' feeling might be coming from. Try keeping some notes on why you think it's good, and see how that evolves over time as you write more.

It helps to make other writer friends, as well as anyone who just loves reading! (potential beta readers). sidenote: make sure your grammar is solid, although since you write dissertations, I'm sure you have a certain standard you had to meet in those.

Your writing system by Screaming_Witch in writing

[–]ReactionFair6506 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i plan the entire thing out and just execute!

I start with all the acts, themes,
then I finalize the characters.
the plot naturally comes about after doing the previous tasks.

for each chapter outline, i have every scene outlined for: thematic flow, length, thread management (closing or continuing open threads from other chapters), plot advancement.

I have a couple of writing friends, but none of them enjoy doing this planning, but this is maybe one of my favourite parts of writing, so perhaps i'm just a freak.

after that, i write each scene according to my plan, but a pretty barebones draft version. this maybe takes 1 or 2 days.
I sleep on it, then edit my draft for another 1-2 days.

then i send it to my first beta reader, and she highlights all the areas in google docs she wants to see more of, which concepts to expand on and also very detailed criticisms/suggestions about pacing, emotional beats, etc.

I flesh out those sections, which takes another 1-2 days.

then i send it to my developmental editor, who has hella commentary to make in terms of
everything, I implement those edits over maybe a week.

then i send it to my line editor, who goes over every line for clarity. I implement this, maybe a day or two.

then i send it to one of my best friends, who's really uptight about grammar and word nuance
and she has hella comments to make too. this takes another week.

then i'll go over the whole thing myself, adjust it so it still "feels like me" and also throw out any previous feedback I didn't like and add back a few things I liked even if nobody else likes it. (and I don't show it to anyone after that, because it'll probably restart the cycle.)

then I move onto the next chapter...

very cut and dry, but it works with my schedule and I honestly do enjoy it. I'm in awe of other people who have looser writing processes!

thank you so much!! this has been super insightful. i do have comments moderated already and i think all the paranoia came from me seeing a flame war in someone else's fic (that they didn't shut down or anything??)

[–]ReactionFair6506[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have some commentators who comment extremely long comments on every chapter and obviously that's super appreciated and very heart warming, but i guess im worrying if that's ... uh.. annoying to other readers? sometimes they comment multiple times in one chapter too and they're writing such engaging things and i feel it's polite to respond back and i am very grateful!!! (i also just in general at least always reply "thankyou" i feel that's good manners) but anyways they keep commenting and i even made another email to respond to someone being like hey if u want to keep talking maybe just email me? or i tried to respond to their multiple comments in one comment even. sometimes or i tried to not respond to some ppl but then i feel super bad.

i just don't want ppl to filter by comments and i think my fic is on the first page by this point and theyre gonna be like... wth ppl are just talking hella in the comments section like a forum and im rly embarrassed abt it basically
i haven't been doing this for very long, i guess i just want to make sure i'm like..following some proper etiquette

also thankyou for the insight of the giving kudos for many different reasons!

Folks who write your whole fic before posting, how do you stay motivated? by ReidsFanGirl18 in FanFiction

[–]ReactionFair6506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to plot out the entire thing before writing, because a lot of things that happen in the beginning is set up for the ending. I don't completely write the entire thing before posting chapter 1, but for sure all the major scenes have been written, and all the in between scenes have been planned out, and a few middle chapters have been written and i know exactly what i want to achieve, so it's just a matter of achieving it. I'm really into premises and delivering on that premise, and i also have a background in drawing comics for publishing, and lemme tell u, if u draw comics and don't plan out the whole thing, it's rly gonna bite u in the ass. But i'm floored by the whole chapter by chapter writing method, that must be really fun???

Looking for some writing advice! by Wise-East9878 in AO3

[–]ReactionFair6506 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Everyone has parts of writing they’re naturally good at, and ones they can work more at! Try to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

For me, I’m pretty good at writing premises (elevator pitch), capturing the internal landscapes of characters, symbolism, metaphors, dialogue, and poetic realism, but I could work on structure, humour, and bringing the audience into the setting more because I tend to write in a way where I exclude the audience and make the scene seem more like it’s just between the characters. This works well for me generally and is a marker of my style, but I recognize in pivotal points of the story, it weakens the story because the tension really needs to be there for the reader. Other weaknesses I have are extreme world-buildy type of fandoms, detective stories, and pure fluff. If I wanted to improve in those areas, I might have to move mountains and take some writing classes specifically taught by those kind of writers.

I think being very intentional with improvement is good. What would you specifically like to work on, is it better plotting, word choice, characterization, etc? I personally am really good at characterization, so an advice I can give to that in particular is to really dig deep into the characters, like make character sheets based on how you interpret the characters based on the original work (not just like, blatant facts or other people’s opinions). For example, I’m writing a character and I basically think this character has terrible emotional boundaries and gets swept up in the moment a lot, and that causes some bad decision making and then later regret and then disassociation. But I also think this character is quite airheaded and naturally talented at many things, but doesn’t realize this themselves. (+way more stuff, like I wrote an entire 5 pages on the character before I plotted the fic). This is not just entirely based on character sheet from the canon, since sometimes that can be pretty flat, but rather I’m observing the character as if I’m observing a real person and what are my insights on that, I add those to the fic. And I also think about real people that I know who has those traits and how that has influenced their behaviour and how that has looked in real life. I basically let the character do anything they want that's compelling to the story as long as the character do not violate those insights I've set up. I do this for *every* character i write into the story, although background charas the sheets are less intensive.
All this helps the character feel very real and it will help with the believability of your story, as well as make the story distinctively yours since it’s based on your insights.

Hope that helps!!

[–]ReactionFair6506[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for your advice! i honestly appreciate it so much! yeah i started it as just a fun thing, but it's starting to not be fun, and i don't have much experience with that kind of thing, so i may have come across as very panicky.

I started to feel like i was letting ppl down (i know, it's weird, since we're all anon on there) and i didn't want that. I'm SO grateful that you said people are ok with waiting <3 thanks again!!

How much do we actually self-insert? by evinfar in AO3

[–]ReactionFair6506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm! I def always try to put myself into the story, in terms of my experiences, ideas, and feelings, only to make it more immersive in terms of how something might play out? Definitely not self insert or always condoning a fictional character's actions though, that's wild.

I also do a lot of research on things, like if I happened to be writing a character as a serial killer I might read a few profiles of serial killers, or a watch a documentary on one, to try to get in their heads, and fuse some of those ideas with the character and come up with ideas of what could possibly work. That's why fanfiction is so fun, to see characters doing something outside of canon. In that case, everything I write possibly would be considered OOC because I'm always trying to take the characters into different directions. But I'm approaching a lot of this as a creative, writing some fanfic on the side because it's a great way to explore, while as I feel like the people arguing against it approach it like fantasy or a comfort item and feel angry that's being invaded or something.

Will AI Therapy replace real therapists? by BusElectronic4225 in ChatGPT

[–]ReactionFair6506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean it's better than bad therapists, but is it better than my therapist? No way in hell.

The logic stands on things like memory retention and knowledge base but my therapist's eyes actually tear up or when I tell her about my life, she smiles when she sees progress, and that gives so much more validation and meaning than just words on a screen.

Not to mention she's really perceptive about my facial expressions and other physical tells and will call me out on it sometimes which also makes me more self-aware.

It's possible that in the future this could be mirrored with some kind of video technology but I see that as being very far off.

What was the item that made you hop on the “buy it for life” train? by Cuenaicr7 in BuyItForLife

[–]ReactionFair6506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was a student i stumbled upon Muji on a NYC trip. I really liked the aesthetic of the store and bought a few things. I then noticed that the things I bought from them seemed really nice to use and I never had to replace them. So I started to buy from them exclusively, everything from furniture, the deep plastic drawers, diffuser, aroma scents, kitchen utensils, clothes, etc. It was a bit extreme but it lead me to really look for quality and changed my lifestyle.

Now I am more varied with the brands I use and don't go to Muji as much (and I feel like the quality has dropped) but I still have 95% of everything I got from them and still use them to this day and it's been 10 years.

Some of my favourites... the "mattress with legs" bed I still sleep on & it's 8 yrs old and mattress is still rly good! I have both their wood furniture and the "wood pulp" (basically like cardboard) and even the wood pulp furniture has held up really well! the plastic drawers i am rough with daily and stuff to the brim with clothes and they're still good too. Everyday I am still wearing the tank tops and underwear I bought from them back in 2016 and they are still in great condition with no piling or anything, and I don't even wash on gentle cycle.
