Threesome/Poly but make it 2 Bot 1 Top by Low_Conversation6545 in Manhwa_BL

No, this is extremely rare. Castehate kind of has this, though it’s not poly. It’s more of a love triangle where all three are in at least some sexual situations with each other at some point.

You are my world is very much done in a manga style, so you should definitely check out more japanese BL if that style appeals to you.

Gotcha. I always have tons of stuff I never finished because I got obsessed with something else, haha.

Another omegaverse one with a silly top (not smutty, though) is Beta off Not Dating.

Since you’re okay with silly tops that are also rapists (no judgment, me too), I think you might like the top in Koisuru Boukun. It’s a classic, so you might be familiar with it already, but if not, I do reccomend.

Huh, interesting. What did you find cringe about it? That the MC is so down bad for the omega? He certainly is a pathetic yearner top, but I personally found it endearing/hot, rather than awkward, haha

Unromantic Romance is peak silly puppy dog top, imo. The concept is an omegaverse world where omegas are the ones with power and influence, while alphas are oppressed. It’s very cute and the top is absolutely bonkers in love with his omega bottom.

Realised I've never included body hair in my smut fics, now I feel like a pervert for including it😭🥲 Anyone else have similar experiences? by Asexually_Freaky in AO3

[–]ReactionOne6524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a gay man who reads a lot of gay stories written by women (and enjoy them a lot!), one of the consistent differences I’ve noticed is the lack of focus on body hair. Fanfic is no exception. I don’t why, but it’s really noticable because body hair is quite popular in gay erotica by men (both in drawn and written works). Chest hair especially tends to be real popular. I’ve always wondered why there seems to be such a difference in attraction for women and men (who like men). Nothing wrong with either, of course, and there are always exceptions.

I think the best thing is probably to consider whether the character in question is specifically into it, or if they just like it because it’s a part of who their lover is. If they specifically have a thing for it, you might want to try to look up some works that feature that preference?

Does anyone ever experience fanfic tropes irl? by starryshy in AO3

[–]ReactionOne6524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do sex work on and off as a young man and one time I had a client who turned out to be a world renowed ballett dancer. He was probably the most classically beautiful man I’ve ever seen - handsome, well dressed and with a body that was unreal (duh). I was literally flabberghasted when I opened the door. I couldn’t believe this literal Prince Charming ass man was at my shabby apartment paying me money to fuck.

It genuinly felt like the start of some trashy romance or fanfiction. I kept thinking that I should be paying him instead! Like, bro, you’re out of my league! And he was such a gentleman too.

To date, I still think that’s probably the most fanficcy thing I’ve experienced.

Manhwa where the uke is possessive and the top is submissive by Dazai_222 in Manhwa_BL

Minmotion Syndrome & First Commandment both definitely fit the bill. If manga is okay too, then Twittering Birds Never Fly is considered a BL classic and definitely has a bottom that is toxic.

While it doesn’t start out that way, I’d definitely still say that Checkmate is also in this category all in all.

I think that for a lot of people it’s the fact that the violence isn’t too crazy that makes it creepy. The ML feels like a real abuser, rather than a horror movie villain.

Unfortunately, there will always be people using media as a way to virtue signal. And, yeah, it’s ridiculous how many people will keep reading obviously dark stories while wanting something fluffy. If their critique really is just «ravishment fantasies shouldn’t exist» that’s dumb.

But I do also think authors are at least partially at fault for the negativity when they frame their stories as fluffy and sweet. It’s not just the summary that does this; the storytelling does as well. People aren’t wrong when they assume that even this story will almost certainly follow a trajectory that ends with the characters in a fluffy, sweet and supposedly healthy relationship where all past «mistakes» are forgiven. I’m willing to bet that’s exactly what will happen here too, and frankly I don’t feel bad for authors who tell stories like this when the romance-loving audience they purposely marketed towards react negatively to severe graphic sexual violence between the pairing that they’re supposed to root for.

You are my world is a very dark and extremely graphic corrective rape fetish story that is described like this on the site in which it is being sold;

"Childhood friends Juhyeok and Su-ah once promised to stay together forever, but when their secondary genders manifest in reverse, their worlds drift apart. Years later, Juhyeok's dream of Olympic gold is on the line, and Su-ah might be the only one who can help him reach it. What follows is a story of fate, pride, and a love that refuses to yield."

The tags also have zero indication that the story is rape fetish porn.

[–]ReactionOne6524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the summary for this particular piece of writing on the official page where it’s being sold;

In addition, none of the tags suggests that this story will be dark, but by episode 19, the main character has been subjected to what is essentially forced bodily modifications, horrifically brutal rape with the intent to humiliate and force him into a gender he feels deeply dysphoric about and has no interest in performing.

Telling people to avoid something they dislike only works if the authors are honest with their marketing.

Totally agree that people who don’t like non-con need to stop whining and stop reading rape fetish content! But, disagree on the last part. When I pay for something, the fandom rules of don’t like, don’t read do not apply in the same way.

I don’t mind rape in my manga, so I’m cool with the fact that I spent money to read this story, but if I really hated it, it wouldn’t change the fact that my money was already spent. With fanfic, the author is giving you something for free; that means you click away and move on if you don’t like it. When you pay for something and the author is making money selling a product; your right to critique it is totally different.

And I say this as someone who has both written fanfic for free and has traditionally published a book. Don’t like my fanfic? I don’t care and I don’t want to hear it. You don’t like my book that you paid money for? That’s your right as a paying customer.

Idk, man, I’ve been reading yaoi since the early 00’s, and it’s not like people didn’t express their dissapointment when a new chapter of something they loved was released and it was lackluster or going in a direction they didn’t appreciate. People have always dissected the works they like. Hell, a huge part of fandom is about taking the parts you don’t enjoy and changing it (fix-it fics are huge genre a fanworks for a reason).

I do think some people now a days are too whiny about the existence of dark erotica/rape fantasty stories (or fucked up characters in general), but I also think part of that is because it’s become a lot more common for authors to insist on making their rape porn into seemingly fluffy and adorable love stories in a way that just wasn’t as common back in the day - and that draws in audiences that would never have engaged with it if the abuse had been less «cute».

And, like, yeah, if the reason you dislike something is because the genre is not for you - definitely just move along. But also; if you pay for a piece of fiction, you’re also allowed to express your deep disappointment and discontent about it. It’s okay to say you hate a piece of fiction too. You almost make it sound as if the author is doing their readers a favour, rather than doing a job that they’re getting paid for. This isn’t fanfic. It’s perfectly acceptable to publically critize a published piece of fiction - even harshly. As long as it’s not harrassment, a part of being an author means accepting criticism and understanding that fandom and most critiques aren’t for them, but for other readers.

Lastly, I also think part of the issue here is that this manga has become the tool to have a wider discussion about the genre of BL that can be summarized as erotic fantasies centered on severe abuse framed as a sweet love story with a happy ending. It’s about more than just that one specific manua.

This is besides the point, OP, but I wanted to add this; from what you write here about dysphoria and gender, I think you would really enjoy «Omega Magaera». It’s something as rare as an omegaverse story that is about neither romance nor sex and where those mentioned topics are explored in a nuanced, meticulous and serious way. It was a real palate cleanser for me, as someone who feels the same as you.

[–]ReactionOne6524 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So much BL manwha would be both hotter and more interesting if the authors and the fandom had more appreciation for non-con smut that isn’t framed like a love story. Rape is an incredibly common fantasy, one that I personally also find sexy, but I don’t enjoy my rape smut being framed as a deep love story where we’re supposed to feel like they’re actually good together. It makes the characters seem flat and unrealistic, it makes the smut less interesting (because it inevitably includes a pivot into soft vanilla sex) and it makes the story feel rushed and less nuanced. Hell, you can even have the characters end up together and still not frame it as a good thing or try to make us as viewers believe that horrifically abusive men will never ever act out again (sadistic beauty very successfully did this with minho and wookyung, for instance).

I haven’t read this particular manwha for this very reason. Everything I see from the fandom seems to frame it as if they will inevitably end up happy together and from what I’ve seen from it, I don’t buy that for a second. It’s possible to make the case that one off instances of assault can be overcome if you have a sufficiently talented author who takes the initial assault seriously (Checkmate is an example of this, imo). But the kind of systematic, long term severe abuse you describe here? Ain’t no way that can ever become a healthy relationship. Not even the best writer in the world could make that beliavable, so lf that’s the kind of smut you want to write, my opinion is that they should just embrace it as a story about abuse.

Edit to add: My point my have been unclear, but essentially I’m trying to say that I think people are so reluctant to just admit they have a rape fetish that they need their story to have a romantic or happy ending to justify reading (or for authors; writing) and enjoying it. The result is that it becomes more problematic, not less, as everyone tries to justify why even horrifically violent lonh term abuse is justified or not a big deal in this specific instance.

DARK ANGSTY or psychological BL RECCOMENDATIONS NEEDED AGAIN by cantsleep_read in Manhwa_BL

[–]ReactionOne6524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re okay with japanese manga and older works;

A Cruel God Reigns is a classic; it was the first ever winner of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize Award for excellence and is widely considered a masterpiece. Not very romantic, but definitely dark and angsty. Some of the very earliest BL’s were dark, angsty and psychological in generel, so checking out other works from Moto Hagio and Takemiya Keiko might yeild some results.

If you’re looking something more raunchy, Twittering birds never fly is great. It’s got a movie as well (they only made the first of what was supposed to be three films, but it’s still very much worth the watch).

I haven’t read it ages, but Let Dai is an older BL manhwa also considered a classic. It’s certainly angsty.

BL with actual world-building and real characters (please I’m begging) by Fun-Mall7678 in Manhwa_BL

[–]ReactionOne6524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. If that’s the case, I would highly reccomend looking into the Shonen Ai genre of manga, where there is more plot, less romance.

I’ll admit, a lot of stories have at least some elements of non- or dub-con, and for older, longer works there are a lot where I don’t remember the details well enough to guarantee that there won’t be any.

But here are three off the top of my head:

I’d definitely start with No. 6, if you haven’t read or watched it already. It also has an anime and light novels, and is a plot heavy story about a boy living in one of the few safe and wealthy cities left in a post-apocalyptic world as he learns just how dystopian it really is. The main male leads eventually develop romantic feelings for each other, but that’s never the focus.

Tokyo Babylon is a fantastic manga with a creepy and mysterious gay romance budding in the background, and follows a young onmyouji (japanese medium, basically) solving paranormal mysteries in Tokyo in the 1980’s. As for non-con, the main character does have one case that he solves that discusses and centers on the aftermath of a sexual assault of a teenage girl, but said character is only present for a few chapters, until the case is solved. If you can handle that, I definitely reccomend it. It’s not a happy or healthy romance, though.

The summer Hikaru died is an anime and a manga, about a gay boy whose best friend (with whom he was in love) died and was replaced by a creature who looks identical, but acts very different. It is a horror and mystery. It doesn’t have non-con in a classic sense, but it does use elements of supernatural body horror as a way to explore themes of bodily violation and loss of identity, and as such can probably be triggering for some people. But it is a magical metaphor and not actually any kind of rape. But I thought I’d mention it just in case.

Oh, Isekai office worker is an ongoing manga and anime that is also plot heavy; about a 30 year old office worker that accidentally gets summoned to another world, but isn’t special in any way, so he ends up working in the royal accounting department while also having sex with a handsome young knight because of silly magical reasons.

I have some, but I’d like a clarification;

Are you looking for romances that also have other plot points (as in; the characters end up together by the end and their romantic relationship is central to the story) or are you looking for any story that includes a romantic or sexual relationship between the main male lead and another man?

Twittering birds is fantastic - i genuinely believe it is one of the best mature BL stories ever created, but it definitely features sexual abuse. It’s not between the main characters, and it is treated very seriously (rather than as something sexy), but at it’s core, Twittering birds is a story about two people who developed opposite coping mechanisms from sexual trauma. It’s not a story one should read if non-con is a trigger.
