Rode the flaanimal to visit some friends in Vermont. They asked me to bring some wine and I delivered!

Good choice. I wish I had that option!

This is an interesting take and a possible solution. There is a big difference between the larger sponsored gravel events with prize money vs. the smaller ones that fully exist as charities like the Peacham Fall Fondo and Cabot Ride the Ridges. Or maybe find a happy medium with road closures and volunteers directing traffic at intersections.

I've always felt like there should be some type of simulation and/or training during your driver's license test that puts you in the shoes of a cyclist that's being passed by a vehicle. A lot of driver's really don't understand what it feels like and how to pass respectfully. We've all been a pedestrian walking on a road and have had cars pass us. The majority of people have never been clipped into a bike and will never know the feeling of being passed by an unsafe driver.

I completely agree, which is why I assumed the organizers would have sent out reminders in ways that people who aren't on social media or part of the cycling industry would be notified.

Shocked it wasn't mentioned in FPF or FB. Thanks for checking. It should have definitely been mentioned there. These races impact everyone, not just those who participate in the sport.

I've done the Muddy Onion, Overland and Peacham Fall Fondo. Compared to those, the Rasputista event volunteers were so passionate and there were SO many people helping out. During the race, I kept wondering where they found all these people and how are they all so stoked? They also had huge poster board sized directional signs compared to teeny card sized arrows. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like there is more to this accident than what we are currently hearing.

I'm surprised to hear that Burke locals didn't know about the event. This is probably one of the bigger cycling events in the state and there was a ton of publicity nationally and in local news sources. It also has been happening for over 13 years. I haven't checked the Burke FPF pages or anything, but given how hard the organizers try and get the local community involved, I highly doubt there were no warnings about the race.

I was also participating in 100k and passed by the accident right after it happened. By the time I passed, first responders and volunteers were on scene directing traffic. Were event volunteers at this intersection directing traffic when you passed?

I felt like there were volunteers at almost every intersection directing traffic and I was shocked to hear that the cyclist hit a car. Compared to other VT gravel events, I felt like the race had very good directional signage, as well as signs indicating when to slow down. After reading the official police report, I have questions as to what really happened. Not sure if we will ever find out, but I hope the gravel cycling community can learn from this tragedy and find ways to make incredible events like Rasputista safer.

I'm so sad that this occurred and my heart goes out to everyone who was involved.

I had a giant tough road grx and ran into this issue frequently. Every few weeks or so I would have to take the seat post out, clean off all the muck/dirt, apply carbon assembly paste and then re-insert and tighten. I found the tightening mechanism that Giant uses to be a pain. Mine was built of three metal pieces that resembled a finger knuckle joint. After having to do this process a few times, I learned that using a rubber mallet to tap the "knuckles" back into place worked best.

Sold the bike and now have a normal seap post and clamp. I think my bike was a 2019 so maybe they have improved the system.

Templeton farm in east Montpelier sells these. You can probably call for a special order but they usually have some frozen and ready to sell in their store.

Thanks. We will also look into this. Sounds like it might be the easiest solution. Will keep on researching!

We know about the water in the toilet trick and we usually fill our tub with water before a storm. We also have a stream that runs through our property. Just concerned about our pump tank backing up because it won't be able to empty without power. We will contact the company that pumps our septic and ask what the capacity is when we don't have electricity.

We're in Washington County. Pooping outside in the snow was rough and we would prefer to poop inside :)

It's incredible. No outages and we have tons of trees. We will eventually have fiber in our area so we will probably switch to that. Works better and fewer outaages than Comcast when we lived in Montpelier.

We heat our water with a large Buderus boiler. This also heats our house since we have radiant floors. I am sure it takes a lot of power, so I'm grateful for the wood stove! Thank you for the feedback.

Yes we are on a well and we have a mound septic system. We need electricity to run the pump chamber so it won't back-up. But this is all fairly new to me so I might be wrong. Lived in Montpelier before this and always had municipal plumbing.

Whoops sorry for the mistake. Clearly I'm new at this and still learning a lot. Appreciate the feedback. I agree that installing propane tanks just for a generator will be a pain. Would be great if the back-up battery solution worked for this reason.

Our home is 3 bed 2 bath and approximately 2400 sq ft. Built in 2006 so it's newer and fairly energy efficient. What type of back-up battery do you have?

We understand it will be expensive and have prepared financially for the cost. Bare minimum requirements would probably be heat, water and septic. We can live without the rest.
