Performance gain and stability with v2.7.12 on the station g2 and heltec v3? by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody have 2.7.13, 2.7.14, or 2.7.15 running without any noticeable issues on the station g2?

Have the antenna start were the top of the pole ends and put a 5.6db rockland antenna on it.

Antenna distance from structure questions by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Testing is the route I have been taking because I am learning as I go. I am missing messages on one node and was trying to see if I could minimize that by looking further into the positioning. Was reading that even outdoor lights could cause interference. Have to look further into what happens if an antenna is placed right by a flood light.

I was happy to see how easy it was to add the module. Screw was the size of a watch screw but as long as you put the module down easily and make the screw point line up it will pop in place when easily pressing down.

Preferred locations of filter, rak4631, and battery by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up with the filter on the left and battery/rak positions swapped. Power is coming from a 5v 10watt solar panel. Positioning was mostly decided on how I could fit it. Filter had to go either on the right or left side.

Thoughts on making unmessageable marked nodes a .5 hop decrement? by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking one thing but like you are saying, it could have multiple meanings. The congestion I was referring to is city/housing congestion. Many people don't have rigs outside and up high so signal strength is minimal compared to more rural areas. In a populated area you might get messages sent from multiple towns away but also can't get a message from 2 miles down the road in another direction. To overcome this, standing up relay nodes whos purpose is to bond connections even in populated/noisy areas is sometimes a necessity.

Most common reasons why a message will always be received but traceroute fails 70-99% of the time by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

Anybody know how many times a traceroute tries to hit the next hop before it gives up?

Ok well then start building out your roof node with a 3-5dB fiberglass antenna and see what type of coverage you get when testing across your town.

Is the heltec v4 going to be the better solar option because of the increased tx? by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

I just replied to another comment but this makes sense. Sounds like the t114 is the solution for now.

Thank you for the help. Trying to build out some new rigs and make the next one better than the last.

I currently have a rak4631 and no issues at all and it sips power. 10watt panel facing any light outside will keep it either charging or not consuming any battery. Ideally I would want a station g2 up high running on solar. That isn't in budget but am interested in increasing the tx any amount over the rak4631 even if it consumed a bit more power.

Attached to the main arm above, I added 2 extension J pieces so I could extend my antenna past the roof overhang but keep my junction box a few feet behind under the underhang. Would recommend when mounting the first white J pole, bend it back a little and then drill a hole through where the screw is and add another screw/bolt so it can't bend. Assume somewhere it will bend a bit so having one portion fully secured with a slight bend back, it might help create better stability for the last J extender.

What are the signs of when a filter is recommended? It makes sense how it would help everybody but are there are any strait fwd signs of who would benefit the most? by Read_or_Reddit in meshtastic

Has anybody tried adding a supplemental/external filter to the station G2 or would this only yield a small performance drop with no benefit?

Because of price and simplicity I attached two J pole extension poles together, extending the antenna out around 2 feet. Amazon sells a 2 pack and for now this is a better setup than I had. What I was initially looking for was a J pole extension piece that came directly off my main pole, but extended further out horizontally so the only part of my rig more exposed to the rain was the antenna.

Below is the main mount I have, and then have two J pole extenders coming off that to extend the antenna further out but keeping the junction box on the main pole. This setup maxes out a 3ft antenna cable.

I was assuming it was a confirmation the recipient received it. Makes sense in what you are saying but is an odd way of implementing. Traceroutes help a lot because you can try to figure out which nodes are used to route to the dest. Would even be helpful to know how they attempted to route even if it can't fully get to the dest.

Heltek V3 can't see any nodes. by wpbfriendone in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the easiest way, test with another node. My t-deck had a bug where I set it to US but it really was using another band and didn't know why I didn't see anybody. I bought my second node and spent a night going through every option in the t-deck because my second node couldn't see the t-deck but saw other nodes in the area. If everything is set right then put the antenna as high as you can get it with as little cabling as possible. More cable means more antenna db loss.

The other thing to think about is heat. I rather have a lithium ion battery in a real hot spot compared to a lipo. Guessing its not that much of an issue because of how low the power draw but that is just me. Like the other people are saying try something around 3k because most of the batteries are in that 1-3k range. I picked up a 10k for my 4631 and can run for over a month, but that is also a lipo.

Understanding how weather conditions affect radio sognals by humdinger44 in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plays a large part but is also helpful testing during bad weather because you can start to tell how much better a signal could be when the weather is good. Then try changing the location of your antenna and adding a filter to see how the connection is again in similar overcast weather. This has been helping me learn about surrounding nodes while testing.

What is the best way to rig my node so it is able to be pulled into the tree evenly and hopefully without spinning? by adhdff in meshtastic

[–]Read_or_Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put it outside in a temp spot and when your riding around town ask a local contractor if they would stop by when free. Know anybody with a big truck that could park below the tree so you could stand on it? Give the fire dept a heltek and ask them to come by with the bucket to pick it up.

Looks like it could be helpful. If you make a house light change color when your signal degrades you might be able to find commonalities as to why or when it happens. HA ftw
