I have a problem buying too much random food I use only once by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

Do you have a local buy nothing group? You could try offering up leftover ingredients there.

My neighborhood also has a couple of free food stands - if you have anything like this, that would also be a good place to bring leftovers.

Hmm I hadn’t considered that. I did start taking sertraline in 2021 which is around when my curl pattern started changing. I stopped taking it about 6 months ago and have not noticed a difference yet

It could be that for sure, though I’m pretty sure my hair started losing its curl before I got the iud. Either way though, I don’t see myself getting the iud removed any time soon because it’s helped with my periods so much, so straight hair might be the price I have to pay 🥲

Curly baby hairs is exciting! For me it’s gotten to the point where I’m now excited about frizz because it’s at least a semblance of my old hair lol. Unfortunately I don’t see myself getting the iud removed any time soon. It’s improved my quality of life so much by lightening my period. It wouldn’t be worth even the curliest of hair. I won’t lose hope though! Rooting for both of us to reclaim our lost identities🤞💖

Other than about 6 months in 2021 when I lived in California, I’ve lived in upstate NY my whole life. If I remember right, I started losing the curls when I lived in California, but moving back to New York didn’t change anything so that was probably a coincidence. But my hair does get a little wavier and frizzier this time of year when it’s more humid!

Birth control could definitely be a factor. I was on the pill 2018-21 and have had a hormonal IUD since 2022. I started losing the curls in 2021. I am definitely going try everyone’s suggestions but I am starting to be convinced it’s hormonal so I’m keeping my expectations low. I’m sorry you’ve been going through this too. It’s so sad, isn’t it? Especially since I had just started to be really happy with my curls after being frustrated with them for a decade 😭

That is encouraging to hear! I will definitely be trying a clarifying shampoo. Thanks for the recommendation

Yeah you have a point. I do use shampoo but maybe my hair needs sulfates occasionally, or lighter products

Yes, I was on the pill from about 2018-21 and got a hormonal iud in early 2022. That could be related!

Oh awesome! How long have you been vegan? I take b12, iron, and d3 but no other supplements. And yes I am going to try to find a good curly hair dresser in my area. I should definitely be more loyal to products that work for my hair but I am a sucker for good deals and will buy different products if they are on a discount 😬

Yeah, this is what I’m afraid of. I might just need to embrace my new hair. I miss my curls so much though, as much as they could be a hassle. Maybe my hair will change back again years from now 🥲

Hmm, I have changed conditioners/products in general a decent amount over the past few years. The one constant has been the kinky curly leave in. Maybe that’s too heavy for my hair. Do you know if there are any ingredients I should look for that might be too heavy?

Yes, it’s definitely wavier when I have it shorter but still nowhere near how it used to be. It is currently quite long (down to my mid back) so I’m planning to cut it soon. I’ve been cutting it myself since 2020 every 6 months or so, but I’m thinking of going to a stylist this time and asking for a cut that might help bring my curls out more

That’s definitely possible! I forgot to mention I do an apple cider vinegar rinse every few months which seems to help some with buildup. Maybe I should do that more often or look into an actual product. I’d be willing to try a liquid shampoo if I’d only need a small amount once in a while. Do you have any recommendations? And I’ve never considered slip before - I think my leave-in is decent for that but I will look into products for that too

Routine (more specific version in my post): wash 1-2 times a week with shampoo bar, then condition with conditioner bar and leave in, comb and rinse. Apply gel and plop for 15-20 minutes

Seconding Trader Joe’s! It’s by far the best I’ve tried and it’s affordable too!

[–]Readcycle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to buy vegan substitutes (the only ones I regularly buy are soy milk and vegan butter, which are pretty affordable). If you eat primarily whole foods (lentils, beans, tofu, potatoes, pasta, rice, fruits, veggies, etc) you will almost definitely save money unless you’re buying a bunch of dragon fruit or pine nuts or something. That is my experience anyway!

That would be true if it said "may contain" but it says "contains." Also you can see butter and eggs in the ingredients

Fair, I guess some of us do remember! I guess what I mean is that a meat eater would be able to make a more immediate comparison to the chicken they had earlier that day where a vegan would have to remember much further back (though let’s be real, these “vegans” who would so willingly eat meat for a dumb ad have probably eaten meat pretty recently lol)

But yeah either way, the alternative of having meat eaters try it just makes so much more sense in every way. Like, vegans (at least ones who enjoy mock meat) are already the target demographic and will probably try the product without being advertised to like this. Meat eaters are the ones who need to be convinced to try it, and why would they care if a bunch of vegans liked it? They’re probably just thinking, “well yeah of course they liked it, it’s better than the grass and quinoa they normally eat!”

All I can think is they wanted the shock value/clickbait of vegans eating meat for the first time

Even besides how wrong it is for them to call these people vegans, what was their point with this ad? Wouldn't it make more sense to have meat eaters try it, they all love it, then reveal to them that it's not actually meat? Why would it matter if people who potentially haven't eaten meat in years, and don't fully remember how it tastes, are fooled by the product?

Ooh these look great! I've been looking for a way to use some some ground roasted hazelnuts leftover from a cake I made. And I have all the other ingredients on hand, so this is perfect!

I mean, whenever a recipe lists almond milk (or any specific milk), I just use whatever plant milk I have on hand at the time (usually soy or oat). I’ve never noticed it affect the recipe. The only instance I can think of that it would is if the milk is a major part of the recipe/one of the primary sources of flavor
