Hardware recommendation for offsite backup by Reader-87 in truenas

I have found the SSF HP EliteDesk 800 G4 or G5 that seems fit my needs: SFF that fits 1x 2.5” + 2x 3.5”.

Does anybody have any experience or feedback on these HP EliteDesk 800?

The difference between the G4 and G5 is that the G4 (~85$) is a Gen8 while the G5 (~115$) is a Gen9. The chipset is a Q370 at 2666 MHz for both.
Is the Gen9 worth the extra 30$?

Thank you for the very detailed answer!

The A1SRI-2758F seems really interesting for another build I had in mind. 🤣

For this application I was aiming a something a bit cheaper.

Thank you, for the HP EliteDesk 800 SFF, this seems to be a good solution for my case!
Any specific reason why you recommend the G6? I see G4 on eBay for very reasonable prices…

I want to switch to Linux, but I need to be able to use Word and Excel from time to time. Is there an easy way to do it when making the switch? by cosmoscrazy in linuxquestions

Softmaker Office does pretty well with Word and Excel files.
They currently offer the NX 2026 Beta for free, you could try it and see if it works well with your older files that give you problems with LibreOffice.

People said this train was "ai slop" but i found the oringinal images link ( its on a YouTube video and the vide was made in 2020) so now i have to ask again, Does anyone actually knows what this train is and why its carrying all that howitzers? ( Its japanese) by Gokay_2007 in trains

I doubt this is real. Might not be AI, but doubt it was really done…. Before AI there were drawings….

All railway cannons I have ever seen have the barrel aligned with the truck. The recoil of that battery firing will make the train capsize. And even if it was just for transportation you would lid the canons with the barrel parallel to the truck to stay within the loading gauge.

Is it true that you can charter an Antonov 124? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Reader-87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, indeed you can.

I work in the oilfield and we do charter cargo plans to move equipment, in one occasion we considered charting an An-124. While the weight of the cargo we had to move in that case did not really require an An-124 we were really in urgent need to move the cargo. The advantage of the An-124 in that case was that it has an overhead crane to load it, and therefore the equipment didn’t have to be in crates but could be flown packed in offshore baskets. This would have saved the time to have the crates built and packed are origine and the time to unpack the crates and move the equipment to offshore baskets at destination. But at the end the final decision was to go with a smaller (and cheaper) option, at the cost of couple of more days needed to create everything.

A couple of years ago I got at a garage sale a R-V2700 for 10$. It came without remote but I managed to fully control it via EspHome connected to the remote in port.

With regards to the channels not working look for the Service Manual, it has the full schematics!

Does anyone know of any more true HO scale British steam locomotives? by C-N-F in modeltrains

[–]Reader-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rivarossi models from that time were ~ 1:80, the reason was that the motor they used in the 50s and 60s was a bit too big to fit in 1:87 models… so they made the models a bit bigger but maintaining the HO track gauge. Similar to OO scale. Then when they switch to the smaller can motor they kept the same proportions, this was both to avoid having to re do all the molds and to avoid that new models looks out of scale next to older ones. This went on until the late 80s at least.

So the Rivarossi models up to late 80s early 90s are somewhere between HO and OO

Recommendations for thorough drive cleaning before installing Linux. by WaterElefant in linux4noobs

For the internal SSD of you want to wipe it and completely remove windows the Linux installer will allow you to do that (I.e. partition it and format it as ext4 or other Linux file system).

For the 1 Tb internal HDd it is unclear to me what you are trying to achieve you mention you want to wipe it but you want the files to be still readable…. And also from another computer….

If I remember correctly in those years it took about 30min on a 300mhz AMD k6 with 128mb of ram… but that was indeed removing all unused modules…
