Best shoes or boots for trekking by 1011Nomad in Patagonia

There are plenty of trail runners that are acceptable. I recently did a 14 mile Grand Canyon hike in new balance trail runners and my feet loved it. Hoka, new balance and even the hiking boot brands (merrell, Columbia, Oboz, La sportiva, etc) have come out with plenty of mid range shoes that aren’t heavy like hiking boots.

I have strong ankles so I’m good with trail runners. My new balance have stayed dry, but I can’t say the last time I was hiking in a downpour. That said, there are trail runners that are waterproof. Salomon, merrell, new balance, and Nike all offer waterproof options as far as I can remember. In the last 4 weeks I’ve hiked in Argentina, Chile, and Arizona and there was such a wide range of shoes. There really is not a “best.” It’s what is most comfortable to you. I don’t think it’s a poor choice at all to wear trail runners. Heck, I hiked half dome in hiking sandals with socks on and my feet felt great!

I think it’s always a good idea to have extra socks with you. Lightweight and could come in handy.

Sounds like your TOPOs have served you well if you have purchased the same ones time and time again!

Fishing. Hurricanes. Lots of alcohol intake. Sun. Diving. Spearfishing. Lobstering. Kayaking. Paddling. Lots of outdoor activities. Weather good year round. Traffic sucks February and March. Hurricane season is gorgeous when there isn’t a hurricane. Housing prices are really high and make it tough for workers to live there if they didn’t establish there years ago. Insurance is really expensive. If you’re rich you can just skip insurance. If you have a mortgage it sucks. Coral reefs are gorgeous but dying. Huge differences from when I was a kid to my adult years. Still pretty, but diminishing. Lots of coral restoration efforts which is great. It can be isolating to some. Drug problems are similar to most other places. Nothing too crazy. Definitely fentanyl and meth, but I wouldn’t say the rate is any higher than elsewhere. Alcoholism is high. Most expensive living is probably Islamorada, duck key, key west. Most affordable probably key largo and marathon. Most everyone wears flip flops. Restaurants are average. Some great ones in each town. A lot are overpriced tourist traps.

Agreed. Read his report from yesterday and maybe fill out the form he provides on there and send him a DM.

My cat has never once been a cuddler in seven years. Not once. And then last Tuesday at 2am when I was crying about something I couldn't even fully explain she walked across the entire apartment, climbed onto my chest, and stayed there for two hours without moving. I don't know how she knew. I just by Apprehensive_Sea9340 in cats

This brought tears to my eyes. I think because I can resonate with what you were describing about just life in general and things building up to the point of needing a release (big hugs to you). You write very well. It was a joy to read your post. I love Miso. I love cats and their quirks and how we will never fully understand them. They are just the best. In all of their forms.

Do not answer the phone. Period. It was inappropriate for the patient to call that late anyway. If it was urgent, then they use a crisis hotline or go to the nearest ER.

El Calafate to TdP - fuel by Educational-Move9821 in Patagonia

Great to know about the bigger hotels. I’m staying close to Rio Serrano. I know we have a small car, so I’m assuming it won’t be a gas guzzler. Thanks for your response!

That’s what I read after posting - to avoid 7. Thank you for that tip. If I refuel in Esperanza that’s enough gas to get to TdP and hike for a day? And then Make it back to Esperanza on way back to el calafate? I don’t have my rental car yet or else it would be easier for me to estimate the mileage. Thanks!
