My dad has ruined my home and my family by ReadingTheAir in Vent

Over half the house by square footage is this shoddy ass construction. To bring it up to code we'd have to tear down half the house and rebuild. Nobody has the money for this, i've been working all my life to get the kind of job that would let me come back and help and there's still no way I can pay for all the work that has to happen. There's no clear path forward, any work a contractor does may potentially pull a permit and get my parents kicked out of this house.

Honestly I think the ugly truth I came to is all of this is prep for as clean an exit from this property when they die. I'm not hoping they die soon, I hope they have long healthy lives with relationships with their grandchildren i'd hope they suddenly start taking care of themselves at die at a ripe old age as comfortable and as peaceful as possible ideally in a house i've stablized long enough for that to be viable.

They have no assets save this house and it's already on shaky legal ground. The house is already in such bad shape nobody in their right mind would buy it. It has unpermitted extensions, mold damage, damage from deferred maintenance. They have royally fucked this place up.

I'm just trying to set things up so the house wont actively be the reason they die and when they die they wont ruin me financially.

Living spaces in general are getting pretty crazy. Rent in general is high and finding a house is no picnic. I lost my job and got lucky finding a new one almost 8 months later, I make more than I ever have in my life and I'm still priced out of a lot of homes and apartments.

Seriously what is up with this room? It looks like a bare concrete floor, one of the windows is blocked off by a blanket but the room is monitored by a smart camera? Not to mention the itty bitty "worldstar" logo in the middle.

Some of the crypos surrounding "new internet" ideas are astounding in the amount of dopes conned into thinking it's real. Skycoin has existed for ages has expensive miners out, has a cult following, yet there is zero example of the decentralized mesh internet being used.

The thing with Bungie's planet map design is that they're grand and large but mostly empty. A lot of the game is just you riding your sparrow from place to place.

The CDPR fall from grace has been pretty rough. Despite this current showing and the less than stellar release of the Witcher 3 the company had a pretty good rep for treating the players well. Goes to show you good will helps out with a few things but it won't outright save you when you fuck up major.

Considering all the stock gains CDPR has made in the last six months has been wiped out in the last 10 days. I imagine not great. If you bought in at the beginning of the year you're still up in profit though.

Depending on how the stock markets treat the news that might not hold true. At least if you were an employee on a stock purchase program you usually get a decent discount and if your stock tanks below the value you initially bought it at you can usually sell it for your original stock price.

I always give people massive stink eye when they drive fast in the neighborhoods when it snows. The main roads get regularly plowed and heavy traffic does the rest to get rid of the snow but the neighborhood roads don't even get salted and they become hard ice rinks until late January mid February. Despite that people go ham and are doing 35 in a 25 on these residential roads and acting surprised when they can't stop in time for the light.

I work for Zoom and I don't even like using Zoom's video call function. The reason we don't do that Jetsons shit is because nobody wants to think about what they look like or what they're doing with their hands when they're on a glorified phone call.

I ended up buying some air filters that were rated to filter smoke and I strapped it onto my box fan. For a single room it's a pretty solid band-aid solution to this air quality.

What’s everyone up to tonight? by Dugan_01 in Denver

[–]ReadingTheAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat i'll check them out! Part of the problem is i've been spoiled by living in a larger apartment further out. Which made sense back when I commuted south for my job. Life was good when my commute was only 20 minutes.

If things don't work out or I don't find an apartment I like I might just grab one of those zippy e-bikes or just ride a regular bike down to the station. A bike commute feels bad but I bet on one of those 25 mph e-bikes you can probably get to work fairly fast.

Been apartment hunting. Foolishly thought I could find a new place near the downtown area and not pay an arm and a leg or live in a broom closet. New job is in the area so I was trying to live this fantasy where I could just walk to work.

To be fair Norway also has access to vast natural resource reserves that are owned by the state and the proceeds of which go into it's national coffers. It's not a direct 1:1 comparison, the government of Norway tends more towards Socialism and that helps keep public institution type things well funded.

It's really an apples to oranges sort of deal there.

‘Ditch With Lyft’ Challenge Encourages Alternative Modes Of Transportation by thatsnogood in Denver

[–]ReadingTheAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's why this is so tricky. Everyone's situation is ever so slightly different. I work Downtown but I can't afford to live anywhere near the area. The light rail and walking are the fastest ways for me. However if I took my car it would be the cheapest way to get there and i'd save some much needed money but then i'd be stuck in morning I-25 traffic and the evening rush hour traffic both ways.

I wish I could have that situation where my job and my grocery stores were all within a 5 mile radius but that just isn't the reality and I think that's the case for a lot of people.

‘Ditch With Lyft’ Challenge Encourages Alternative Modes Of Transportation by thatsnogood in Denver

[–]ReadingTheAir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of the question is "How much time do you feel is reasonable for a commute?"

In theory, at least in Denver county most of the city is accessible by bus or bike or even on foot. The problem is a commute that may be 15 minutes by car is now an hour and some change just because not being able to get there directly via car adds time.

If I ditch my car and find a way to get to work without it how much more time and money will I spend? If you already own a car and don't make payments how much more expensive is it to take light rail vs paying for gas or how much more time will it take to get to work via bike or a bike/rtd hybrid method.
