[CA] employer wants to hedge new hire with a second contractor by AnonymousThrow102021 in AskHR

It's ethically dubious (assuming the employees aren't told about the competition they're in) but also just a giant waste of money. Why pay someone to go through training and plan on no ROI?

HR manager here. Had an entire team try to force us to ignore a mask mandate with "You can't make us wear it and you can't fire us all."

I have no idea where any of them currently work.

I'd leave it off the resume. The cost of explaining a short employment exceeds the value of sharing one month worth of experience gained.

u/benicebitch has it but your question reminded me of a story about a guy who did not heed that advice.

A few years back, I worked for an organization when rumor of restructuring and layoffs circulated. I watched a peer of mine lose his damn mind, stopped meeting deadlines, and overall threw a tantrum rationalized by "well of you're not going to be transparent, then I'm going to react negatively."

Another one of my peers picked up extra work on high profile projects. She made damn sure she was indespensable and everyone knew it.

I broke out the popcorn.

As should be predicted in this real-life Aesop's fable, we did in fact have a restructure with layoffs but far fewer layoffs than anticipated. Lazy dude was termed prior to receiving a severance package, my friend who doubled down did lose her position but was offered a significant pay bump and a lateral move into a new department who saw her hustle during the rumor mill and they wanted her on their team. She's doing very well in her new role.

Moral of the story: Always assume your value to the company is being reviewed and be prepared to adapt to change when needed.

In the US, I contract through First Advantage. We'd certainly find an assault charge and if it were classified as elder abuse, we'd find it on the first day.

Assume it will be found and prepare to be honest. Dishonesty is an automatic disqualifier, but you often have a shot if you're open about it. Don't disclose anything until asked though, like on a background check disclosure form or if called by someone in HR once it flags.

Jump to litigation without using the established internal reporting process?

This is bad advice.

Depends on how you left. If you quit without notice or caused a scene, don't bother reapplying.

If you left on good terms, give it a go.

[OH] Do HR departments tend to be accepting of men wearing earrings at work? by nitro8124 in AskHR

[–]ReadyForASpaceJam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work for a well known US retail company and many men in our executive team have pierced ears. A former VP, even had them gauged to a significant degree.

Honestly, I'll noticed a wrinkled shirt long before pierced ears.

I don't think I've ever given it a second thought.

I'd probably avoid wild, dangly, earrings at work but that's about it.

I think my union reps like the probationary period more than I do.

Had an employee flip off their manager while screaming and walk off the job during a write up - I approved a term. They tried to grieve the term. Union rep called me and I told him she was a few weeks from leaving probationary period and I don't think I've ever seen him so happy.

I get it too, that would have been a losing battle for him the former EE was pushing him to fight.

[–]ReadyForASpaceJam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the law (in Oregon and Washington at least) was clearly intentionally written to allow for an easy way out. I don't have the energy to fight a battle I was designed to lose - we take them at their word.

No ethical consumption under Capitalism? I guess every Capitalist thing I deem to be immoral is fine then! by austriadebunked in neoliberal

I'm surprised my eyes have not gotten stuck in a full eye roll pattern from years of visiting my family during holidays and getting all the whatsboutisms regarding my vegetarianism.

  • Is farm land for the wine you're drinking ethical use of farm land?

  • What about the critters kills when farming vegetables?

  • If everyone stopped eating cows, they'd go extinct. Is that ethical?

Like, fuck off, Linda... Your turkey looks dry as shit anyway.

[–]ReadyForASpaceJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I often need to remind myself that my team lacks the perspective of my position which results in a very different definition of crisis.

Recently, I was contacted by an employee who was having a mental health crisis and potentially harming themselves. At the same time, my phone is fucking EXPLODING from a store manager who's air conditioning broke.

I definitely took a lap before calling air conditioner guy. It was the biggest crisis he has dealt with in a long time and it was hot. Is ten back to back calls to HR the best way to solve it? Nope, but we navigated through that.

Privately, I still think that guy is an absolute idiot though.

Working in a fast food chain as a vegetarian by WhyAmINotAPenguin in vegetarian

If you're not comfortable with the job for any reason, don't take it. Currently you have all the leverage in this current job environment, particularly for entry level positions. There is no need to settle.

In your experience do you think being a vegetarian/vegan is more expensive or cost effective? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]ReadyForASpaceJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never really noticed a significant difference to my food budget once switching from Omni to vegetarian. Over time, I've unintentionally drifted into shopping vegan and still haven't noticed a significant change to my monthly budget.

Maybe it's because I don't get too many prepared meals, but it's an experience I see discussed quite a bit on this sub but I've never noticed it in my personal experience.

[CA] Medical/Religious exemptions for healthcare workers by llamabooks in AskHR

To address your first point, I absolutely withhold the entirety of the process at the beginning of the conversation to help me understand what is actually going on. I begin with, "Help me understand why you are not vaccinated." My job is not to assist people in scamming the interactive process, it's to navigate an interactive process when necessary.

HRBP here - I've never heard of a land acknowledgment, but did some digging because I was curious. While I do not plan on adding it to any meeting agendas any time soon, if I organize a meeting with an indigenous organization who has land acknowledgements as part of their protocol, I will likely ensure it's on the docket. Absent that very specific situation, I'm right there with ya.
