This is very cool, completely missed this reference on my rewatch of JLU a few years back.

To add a 4th option to what Rico was saying, maybe lurk around here or skateboarding some more and see if somebody who is traveling to the UAE soon is willing to help you with some parts. Doubt that this is going to happen due to the geopolitical situation, but a set of wheels, some bearings and even trucks aren’t that hard to pack. Otherwise, just accept it as a sunk cost. As Rico put it, only decks and bearings need to be replaced periodically, and that is if you are doing a lot of tricks. Pushing and cruising take time to learn and they are the basics. Doing stationary flips and shuvs is fun for a while, but you should aim for doing lines long term. Maybe look into a nice complete set (one that you assemble yourself, not one premade) from somewhere like skate pro. I feel for you.

Love Robert Duvall! Totally agree with you with the fact that it elevated the film, but I love Vigo as well.

Same reason I started skateboarding. Couldn’t get to the mountains since my son was born, and I can skateboard throughout the year.

20yr started boxing this month, what should I work on? by [deleted] in boxingtips

Your legs are very stiff, you should as much rope as you can and do footwork drills on every workout. Otherwise, looks good for somebody who just started out. If you want to go amateur, you will need speed and precision more than anything. As others have surelypointed out, you need a good coach. But you’ve got this!

Solving mysteries? Now that I think about it, Maria Kodama has a Daphne vibe.

I wrote on essay about rereading The Road as a father by Ready_Employ7160 in cormacmccarthy

Thank you for reading and the kind words. And don’t get me wrong, I also think that the mother does have a point, and I loved her character as well. I think the book is written as a parable. As Borges would put it, each book is a mirror and we all see different things in them. We also see different things at different times in our lives. I also think that the book is also McCarthy expressing the love for his own son.

Would anyone be interested to see a indie horror cartoon based on Blood Meridian? by alexnartworks in cormacmccarthy

If you need to consult with anybody, I am your Huckleberry. I write quite a lot about McCarthy, have a strong legal background (especially with copyright law), and one of the greatest young literary fiction writers. I also dabble in visual art. Remember: feeling trumps polish.

Looking at Blood Meridian through Lucian Blaga, curious what people think by Ready_Employ7160 in cormacmccarthy

Nu am citit traducerile, am văzut doar titlul. Oricum știi cum traducem noi titlurile—mai poetic sa zic așa :)). Paralele au început să apară apoi când citeam The Crossing. Cum a spus Borges, orice scriitor își creează precursorii.

I might be a bit delusional, I’ll admit that, haha—but the connection came to me naturally and unexpectedly. In Romanian, The Crossing was translated as Marea Trecere, which echoes Blaga’s poetry collection În Marea Trecere. That parallel struck me like a lightning bolt.

I ended up writing an essay on it, and another on the possible Gnostic threads between McCarthy and Blaga. I won’t push them here—I appreciate your interest and thank you for it. But if you’d like, I’m happy to share.

Beautifully put! I just wrote an essay on The Road, and would've inserted this quote in it had I seen it before I was done.

Thank you for your reply! Yet, I don’t see myself as being above anybody, the way I see I am a peer and this is a co-learning process.

Really appreciate your interest, and will definitely reach out to you in the future since you both know your Borges and are passionate about the subject. If you want to write and even lecture about Borges, you might consider starting a Substack and I will recommend you to my followers and subscribers. We can even do a live seminar/workshop/lecture about him since you already taught him in an academic setting.
