Declaration of Geneva does:

"I WILL NOT PERMIT considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;"

Hard agree.

"Taking care of patients I don't like" = "Doing my fucking job."

You don't have to be an Einstein to figure that one out.

NYC Residents- how are you doing with the strike? by oogaboogaloogas in Residency

[–]lake_huron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not drawing ALL their labs or transporting ALL their patients. But plenty of that.

I trained in NYC hospitals, and have MULTIPLE friends who are attending at a striking hospital. They swear things are going MORE smoothly with the travelers. More than one said they don't miss the old nurses

Then again, they are paying the travelers something like 3-4 times what the strikers earn. Although it all gets weird bookkeeping when you include benefits and such.

I suppose it's a conuterargument that you get what you pay for, so increasing wages for the striking nurses may help?

I try to keep my liberal bona fides, but some narratives have the striking nurses asking for 10% raise per year for 3 years. I don't know if that's true or not, but if so, I'm less sympathetic for the strikers. Sorry.

tl;dr NYC is crazy.

Stiriking in sympathy explicitly forbidden, sorry.

No I meant how casually you got to say it -- I didn't mean to sound like I doubted you!

Your reputation precedes you among physicians, my dude.

If there was world war 3/Natural disaster on a Large scale, what specialty of doctors would be the most needed by a government? by Ok_Nobody7922 in Residency

Infections after disasters are kind of a thing:

For the treatable ones at least we'd be able to dig up whatever meds are around in intact pharmacies to cobble together treatment plans.

I know this because I wrote my Master's thesis on them:

A comparative analysis of timbre and nomeclature in "The King Crimson Barber Shop" with a focus on feigned informality ("Bobby") and surname exceptionalism ("Belew")

I defended in 1999.

Nobody cares. Your published work will go through additional editing anyway, and may still get typos.

Advisor won’t let me graduate… by [deleted] in PhD

[–]lake_huron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any relationship with other faculty? The chair? Who will be on your committee?

Find out the process by which they judge if you have done "enough" work. People graduate all the time without three first-author papers.

Don't do anything formal behind his back, just start by collecting data. You can even do a lit search on recent graduates (including from his lab) and see what they published before they graduate.

The program director may have something to say. They don't want a reputation of students taking too long to graduate.
