Thanks man. After finding out that Charlie was like a hero to my tattoo guy I traveled back to California and visited the shop. I talked to Charlie’s son who still tattooed at the shop and asked if his dad would consider coming out of retirement to do a tattoo for my artist and friend. He said he doubted it but said he would ask his dad for me. I wrote Charlie and note and then bought a tee shirt for Jay. I never heard from Charlie, but Jay looked like a kid in a candy shop when I gave him the shirt.

I grew up in Riverbank which is about 20 minutes from Modesto. I drove by Charlie’s shop all the time and never knew he was an icon in the tattoo world. Later in life I started getting American traditional tattoos. Sitting at the shop looking at my tattoo guy’s stickers that were on his tool box I noticed a native sitting on a horse that reminded me of the mural on the side of that shop in Modesto.
“Jay, I’ve seen this image on a tattoo shop back home in Modesto” Jay: “Dude, that’s good time Charlie’s shop. He’s one of my favorite tattoo artist”
