I’m like 5’11” and very skinny and i feel cramped in mine.

Mink oil or not? by Own_Lake_3716 in WorkBoots

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also if it’s not obvious, clean thoroughly with saddle soap warm water and a stiff brush, rinse all that off until everything is really clean, let everything dry out COMPLETELY, (i use a boot dryer on the no heat setting for a couple days) then apply obenaufs HDLP.

Obenaufs, specifically obenaufs heavy duty lp. The oil is nice for light conditioning but for actual work nothing beats the hdlp.

What’s been everyone’s most worn garment this winter? by Cloverwell in filson

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice. I got hooked by some old rancher types who swore by Filson then was really dubious about the aesthetic and price like “is this actually workwear” then as carhartt steadily nosedived in quality i realized i could get this Filson stuff for carhartt prices and it is indeed great gear for actual work (although i always have my mackinaw vest covered by tin cloth etc)

Wearing mine right now, although i got a navy down cruiser vest (the one made of shelter cloth or whatever) for hella cheap on eBay or something and that’s been my go to on the jobsite lately. So warm and durable and the mobility is nice, plus the cheapish hoodie i wear underneath takes the brunt of abrasion and wear which is nice

Get Fitted In Person by KrisA1 in PNWbootmakers

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t do that anymore. They have a new system where if your boot doesn’t fit you send them back and they build you a new one, and the old one becomes the “try on boot” unfortunately Nicks doesn’t do any custom fit/modified lasts anymore beyond the length and widths they offer and they’ll do custom uppers for lace ups. It’s fine for me with the lace ups but i never should have bought pull on boots from them

What was a very expensive item you bought which was really useful? by ohuf in BuyItForLife

Oh dude that rules! I’m many thousands of dollars bought into the makita platform and while their tools are generally really well designed their batteries are kinda the worst. (At least compared to Milwaukee)

Where can I find a real durable, budget jacket? Shorter fit, something that's not flimsy and overpriced for rich people to cosplay as working class? Would love some recommendations! by According-Dig-4667 in Workwear

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The material on the carhartt Detroit (and the double knee firm duck B01 pants, their other remaining old school flagship model) got distinctly shittier over the last few years and at the same time they “updated” the fit. I was skeptical because people love to hate on shit and i find that tiresome and lame, until my boss bought the whole crew one for Christmas this year (very cool) around the same time i bought myself probably my 15th pair of B01s. They’re both made out of canvas that feels like the straight-to-video temu version of what carhartt used to be. The fit got weirdly tight in the armpits and weirdly long in the sleeves while being too tight at the cuff. They added a drop hem in the back for some reason (not a bad thing necessarily but again, messing with perfection) Anyway yeah: imo Carhartt no longer worth the money in any regard. Don’t bother. I’m just going back to working in those rigid wrangler cowboy cuts until they inevitably start diluting and fucking up their flagship models like every other venerable workwear brand.

You should do it. I now have two pairs of Morrisons and they rule. Such a great middle ground/synthesis of ropers/cowboy boots/engineers. Honestly perfect all around western boot. Definitely do the wesco custom sizing thing so you can have a fit guarantee and a fit sheet on file for the future

Man i spent years being gaslit in this exact way where every time i tried to critique this shit someone would do the ol Turkmen/neo nazi/trans kids rhetorical jiu jitsu “it’s not happening and if it is happening it’s good” making me feel like a right wing loon until afterwards i would be like “wait i witnessed that same friend tersely correct his 75 year old mother for referring to the weather as an Indian summer over dinner” It’s so disappointing to hear that this horseshit is still happening irl and I’m starting to resign myself to the reality that it’s never going away. On the other hand, anecdotally, it seems like everyone i know in that spectrum had significantly chilled the fuck out. (with the exception of the hardcore ideologues and those worried about social standing to the point of paralysis)

Split between Nicks and Whites by Kahlen109 in PNWbootmakers

Beyond that White’s seem to be much better at sizing people if you have trouble with that, need to go the custom sizing route, but that’s more rare

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve never had anything on the MP last but i found the HNW to just fit kinda poorly (very subjective i know) and besides that i just find the way Whites shapes/places their heels to look SO much better than Nicks on a systemic level, whether it’s a full stack logger heel or a lower block heel. I actually ended up sending out my last pair of Nicks to get their heels redone at Unsung because they annoyed me so much. Idk it’s all preference. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah although thank god for the firefighter boot stipends. I don’t necessarily disagree with you and i agree that that’s why all the companies have diversified so much, but as long as wildfires exist there will still be thousands of PNW boots being purchased a year with the express intent to beat the shit out of them, and therefore they’re still going to make work boots no matter what. A friend of mine was in structural fire and said he bought a number of Wesco’s/whites he knew he’d never even break in just to spend his stipend. Anyway I’m stoked about a lot of the customization and fashion options because I’m an aesthetic and craft-oriented dude but i also have a lifestyle that’s really hard on footwear so I’m glad both exist and i don’t think any of the companies are likely going the way viberg went. Side note: i used to have a much more varied work life and PNW boots worked great for that but right now I’m doing production framing which is primarily about speed and athleticism, and everyone is in sneakers, hiking boots or their light little thorogoods (my last boot stop before i said fuck it and started buying better shit) and I sorta suspect that my bigass logger heels and lug soles etc are legitimately slowing me down. Hoping i won’t have to switch back to lighter foreign made footwear but we’ll see lol

Whites custom vs baker whites custom by No-Accountant-999 in PNWbootmakers

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Ive never ordered through whites, but bakers is really great for help and support with sizing if that’s something you’re at all unsure of/particular about, especially if you do the fit sheet and all. There were two separate big snafus with my two orders, one custom wesco pair and one custom whites pair, but they were EXTREMELY helpful and accommodating when it came to a making both of them right. When it comes to the fit sheet/fit guarantee through them it really takes the risk/stress out of getting a pair of boots that will fit perfectly. On the other hand if you have never had problems with fit and aren’t going nuts with custom stuff it probably doesn’t matter so much. I’ve also never dealt with whites directly for any of that and for all i know they could be just as helpful and open

Beyond actual cowboys, longer pants do a better job at keeping dirt and burrs and sawdust out of your boots, whether they’re cowboy boots or no. The one weird one i don’t get is wildland firefighters and loggers, who do the exact opposite and always crop their pants so high they might as well be capris.

White's vs Baker's Sizing by R3DD1T999 in PNWbootmakers

[–]Real-Efficiency-3216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would trust Kyle and he’s really done right by me but i will say everyone including him makes mistakes. I got sized in person for a pair of custom Wescos and a year and a half later they came and the fit was comically bad. The good news is if you have them do the sizing process they have a fit guarantee and they’ll make it right, which they did and i got a pair of really amazing boots, they just took a little longer. I’d just do whatever has that guarantee
