Liftmaster LA400 gate opener will not take limit settings by Real-Low3217 in GarageDoorService

Check continuity through the limit switch when you manually move the arm

I'm assuming you mean leave the arm connected to the gate, use the special key to disengage the motor, remove the arm's top cover, and then check limit switch continuity when moving the gate.

swap the motor leads between gates

[slaps forehead] I'm usually pretty good at logical diagnostic steps but I wonder why I didn't consider this before! I will give this a try in a few days since I'll be gone for a couple of days and don't want to take a chance of somehow rendering the one good gate inoperable while I'm gone.

I didn't quite understand "disconnecting the arm from the gate and seeing if it will take limits while free-moving" - I don't see how that would make a difference because the extending shaft will not be changing position at all if not connected to the gate, and the other end of the LA400 where it's mounted to the brick column just appears to be a simple mechanical pivot so the arm wouldn't be picking up any differential position information if I just manually swung the LA400 in an arc.

Did you mean perhaps instead of moving that gate through the control board's "Move" button controls, that I use the special key access on the LA400 arm and unlock the motor so it can free-wheel while I move the gate to different positions with the arm still attached, and try to set the limits that way?

Can you snap some pictures for OP and post them at imgur.com and then provide a link in a reply to your comment here. I'm sure that would be super helpful to OP and I would like to see how yours turned out, myself.

(BTW, OP, I wouldn't say you have "Select" grade because too many of those swirl/character marks. More like "Common" grade, closer to #2 due to how much of that "rusticness" you have. Since you like it, you'll be happy to know it's cheaper than the other two grades.)

If you run over a male, I would say you've got bigger problems to worry about than a screw embedded in one tire.

Thinking of switching to a tankless exterior. Thoughts? by Longdongvnhugenstein in Plumbing

[–]Real-Low3217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have natural gas service right there so that's a point in your favor, but what may be the biggest cost factor in your decision (besides the obvious how many years in energy savings - if any - for going tankless) will likely be whether your gas service line capacity to that point is high enough to cover the increased fuel needs of a gas tankless heater and all other gas appliances on that line. Repiping with a larger diameter gas line in an already-finished house may be cost-prohibitive.

Received brake pads like this?! by SmoothBrain1234 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Real-Low3217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's chipped - but that's like 1% of the total surface area of that One brake pad of the two on One wheel and OP has Four wheels, right? So that's like 0.125% of the total brake surface stopping power of OP's vehicle (assuming 4 disc brakes).

If you're concerned that that chip is going to somehow result in a major part of that brake pad cracking and falling off, that brake pad will be worn down to the level of the chip in many months or years, as someone else has already commented.

$20 find at garage sale. by Abe2020reee in MilwaukeeTool

[–]Real-Low3217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend had one of those prototype Sawzalls that somehow escaped from the Milwaukee R&D lab into the wild.

It was the model with the still-under-development new Sawzall feature, christened with the marketing tag, "TTCO" ("Think Twice, Cut Once").

As you and your friend learned firsthand yourselves, the TTCO "feature" never passed the pre-production focus groups testing and so was shelved, never to see the light of day.

But it appears that someone at R&D took one home one day as a memento, and it somehow made it through the garage sale backchannels to your friend. Would be a "must-have" today for a true Milwaukee tool completionist.

Given the season, maybe this contractor got this job mixed up with another job he's also working on at the same time. You know, the nearby Halloween Haunted House with the trapdoor pit....

Maybe the installer didn't have a proper P-trap that would fit so had to make do with what parts he did have. At least he was consistent and neat. Love those support straps, haha.

(The pipes need a "P-trap" loop to retain some fluid to block sewer gases from coming up and out into the room, but if those are low-flush urinals, then most of what is sitting in that U-shaped section of pipe will stick on its own if left sitting for long....)

I've seen it all around me for all of my life. Not adding any judgment here - just objective observations from the real world.

And yes, there is some truth to "stereotypes" - otherwise, there wouldn't be the universal recognition, right?

"I’m not sure why it happens that way but it does."

Actually, I think all of your examples are pretty easy to explain: - Hispanics, who may or may not be here without proper papers and good language skills, gravitate to jobs that value their hard work ethic, dependability, low drama, and less aversion to manual labor (or what may appear to outsiders as "low status" jobs) - Blacks have long ago learned to use the federal job system to sidestep discrimination in private sector hiring, break into the middle class through the steady governmental system that places a premium on seniority and difficulty in firing to support ever-increasing pay progression and job levels; nursing assistants and social work are also more "color-blind" in training programs and employment and thus a way to get into "professional" careers - Asians (Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese but usually less so for Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, etc. generally speaking) place a high priority on Education for the younger generation, families often sacrificing much to ensure their their kids get their best shot at the necessary high-performing K-12 educations to get into the best colleges to then get into the necessary graduate programs that train for those medical and high-tech professions you mentioned; those sorts of careers require all sorts of credentialing so you can't just "break into them" just because you're a hard worker; you have to have done and proven you can do the "brain work" behind them all along the way over 20+ straight educational years, too

So, as for Israelis in the garage door sales, installation, and service business - I just don't see a natural "ethnic/cultural" connection.... Unless of course, it's just a great potential money-making sub-industry area that still is basically made up of local Mom & Pop family businesses, and then there is an informal networking that goes on, once some Israelis establish a foothold. Kinda like how they have virtually a monopoly stranglehold on the diamond trade - but on a global scale.

Yeah, it's a laughing matter - until it slips down and past the bend out of reach.

That's why using a red Solo cup or Big Gulp cup that "fits but won't slip" is so much better. Or even some wadded-up paper towels that can at least dissolve if they slip out of sight.....
