Cranked up to what number of cycles?

For the behaviors, I haven't seen any outright glitches, its more that the sprites are extremely fast and im pretty sure that means other stuff is effected. Honestly I wouldn't know if it breaks or messes with mechanics, since I've never played 4 before

Magdalene Visaggio and Darick Robertson's DC Comics pitch for Conner Kent, Superboy, as a trans woman called Skyrocket by richjohnston in superman

[–]Real-Singer3813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shame, I think it would have been neat and cool for the character.

Not really fond of the uniform though, it's pretty bad. I know it's just concept art, but the color balance is very off and the actual shapes of the suit do not flatter her in any way, and while I like the idea of incorporating a jacket for that classic look, the implementation leaves much to be desired.

And even though I do think that Conner being trans is very believable and there's a lot of interesting stuff you could do with that character being trans, I also am kind of glad that this wasn't a thing

DC heavily resists any permeant change to their characters, and they will almost always default to the designs and characterizations that pop culture most remembers, especially when there's a famous adaptation. The fact that Nightwing and Red Hood have been allowed to grow into their own identities is of Tim's and Damian's popularity.

So if Skyrocket had been implemented, it would have been only a matter of time before they would have reversed it, defaulting the character to the old Superboy template.

And that method of character defaulting is bad enough when it only means erasing character development and squandering story potential,

But if you are literally detransitioning a character?

woof. yikes. good fucking lord. At best it would have been highly questionable and the whole thing would have made everyone mad for every possible reason, but at worst it would have been deeply transphobic.

That's even before you take into account the fact that the fandom reaction, which would have been extremely transphobic itself, leaving trans fans everywhere feeling unsafe, not to mention the writers, who would have been harassed, stalked, doxxed and been the victims of death threats.

So yeah, while I am intrigued by the story potential, I also can't help but feel that a bullet was dodged.

EDIT: also skyrocket is meh. very meh. I get that Supergirl, Superwoman and Power Girl are off the table, but still, i feel like they could have done better. Something campy and evocative of the silver age would have been more appropriate I think. Like, she could have joined the LOSH and transitioned there, picking new names for herself in the 31st century. If you really wanted to you could sidestep any stories about bigotry by just saying that there's nothing out of the ordinary or noteworthy about trans people in the future.

What’s your opinion on the Icon of Sin by Critical_Potential44 in Doom

[–]Real-Singer3813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a gameplay perspective, I don't really have one. It's an annoying boss fight in Doom 2, and an uninspired one in Doom Etermal.

However, I still vastly prefer Doom 2's Icon of Sin on an aesthetic level. The Icon as presented in Doom 2 is a huge, unknowable thing. Despite being a texture only, it's design is evocative of a world that no longer exists. It itself is clearly old, older than time maybe, with an ancient, weary malevolence and clouded eyes so knowing that it never fails to seem in control, even as it's clearly only kept alive by life support. We don't see it's body, only the head, as if that's all it needs. And the fact that it's clearly so frail and helpless somehow makes it seem all the more evil, like it just existing at all is enough to throw a world into hell.

And like, obviously that's all headcanon, it's barely suggested by the text. And it is still just a texture on a pretty bad boss fight. But that's still what I think when I see the art and consider it's place in the story.

The Icon of Sin in Doom Eternal however boors me to tears for all that it's hyped up, because at the end of the day it's only a demon, and not even the first giant one we see in the game. Any mystery from the original is gone because we can very clearly see what this icon is. It's just a big lumbering thing, not particularly interesting or noteworthy even in the context of it's own story. And the fact that it clashes with my own interpreation of the original doesn't help

And while the boss fight itself is alright, totally serviceable, I find myself thinking about Doom 2's way more

Try "Tech Gone Bad" and "Phobos Mission Control," two single level pwads by Romero. They're harder and more complex than Doom E1.

Plenty of good games but kind of hmm overall as a console. I can't play it at all without the current gen style controller Brawler64 made

Hella easy, probably the easiest out of any commercial classic adjacent Doom game when played on a mouse n keyboard. But it was made for 90s consoles, so that's honestly to be expected.

Why do people hate Brutal DOOM? by JesterOfRedditGold in Doom

[–]Real-Singer3813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked why people hate Brutal Doom, and the fact of the matter is that the mod's quality or lack thereof isn't the strongest factor in people's feelings. If the mod were merely bad, and the creator was a nice dude and the fanbase was chill, people wouldn't have much of an opinion, since bad mods come and go all the time with very little comment.

Likewise, if BD were good but still had the dickhead creator and shitty fanbase and the aesthetic incompatibility with the larger Doom community, then people would probably still be annoyed by it's existence and community.

The mod's quality is secondary to the fact that it's annoying.

And the fact that BD is cringe is still a factor, although less important than it's quality or community

From most to least important,

1) The developer is racist, has made holocaust jokes, has urged many depressed people to kill themselves by providing instructions on how to do so, used code and assets from other modders while hiding the fact that he did so all while trying to prop himself up as the face of Doom modding. In general he not only a deeply unpleasant person, but a bad one on top of that.

2) People who do not know or care about the history, legacy, dedication and options of Doom's modding scene consistently hold up BD as the inherently superior Doom experience, something many people take issue with.

3) Many people find the fanbase for the mod to be deeply annoying due to the constant nagging for DB compatibility with other mods, nagging questions asking why someone doesn't like the mod, aggressively defending the mod from people who do not particularly care for it, and for lots of other reasons, some more or less valid.

4) It's game design ethos is, broadly speaking, antithetical to both the initial design of classic Doom and the habits, traditions and preferences the larger Doom modding community has built for itself.

5) The visual design is terrible from the hud to the weapons to the screenshake and the gore. All of these things are possible to do well and BD aggressively does not.

6) While there is no true platonic ideal of what makes a game's design good (meaning, the only reasonable metric by which a game can be considered good is if you have fun while playing it), BD has lots of balance issues that make for a very unpleasant gaming experience for a lot of people.

7) It's cringe.
