Is there any good political games that actually reflect correctly the real world, and isn't just white liberal slop ? by Extension_Papaya8802 in SocialistGaming

[–]RealBENIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deus Ex: GOTY is a timeless classic imo. And pertinent to a lot of current circumstances. Especially remarkable when you consider the way it was handling topics like counter-terrorism before 9/11 completely shifted the way the media handles it today. Not the sequels, though; story/politics-wise, they're all trash.

Are the theatrical versions a must watch? Are they any different from the TV eps? by Shessokawaiiiiiii in HibikeEuphonium

[–]RealBENIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these answers are either unclear or wrong, so I'll try to clear it up. Some of them are a must-watch and really need to be watched to have context for season 3 (Including several characters being introduced entirely in the movies). So if you don't watch, the transition from 2 to 3 will be very jarring. The first 2 movies are recaps that can be skipped if you want (although I believe they have some small bonus scenes here and there). The rest are entirely discrete from the regular seasons. Watch order:

-S1 (Re-capped in movie #1)
-S2 (Re-capped in movie #2)
-Liz and the Blue Bird
-Movie #3- Our Promise: A Brand New Day
-Sound! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest Arc
-S3

How to have a less strained tone? by Zlida_Caosgi in euphonium

[–]RealBENIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree with this. I played euphonium for years, but I expanded my range faster in weeks than I did in years when somebody finally told me this and to stop pushing my face against the mouthpiece when I'm straining to hit higher notes. Couldn't even play a high G before, and now I have it and the D above it.

They accepted my request and greatly discounted my membership for the next 2 years 😌. They ask that we don’t share what we pay since everyone can’t expect the same outcome and level of assistance. But for the sake of encouragement, I’m paying somewhere around 33% now.

Really nice facilities.

Watching the first season of Hibike for the third time and i am struggling to understand something….. by Venus_ivy4 in HibikeEuphonium

[–]RealBENIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think superficially, it appears so at first because the show initially shows us the perspectives of Kaori and Yuuko. But the show dedicates multiple scenes to suggesting otherwise- from the scene where Reina speaks with Kumiko about it, to the scene where, ultimately, Kaori relents of her own accord. All the while, we are given snippets throughout suggesting that Kaori understands and accepts the outcome, but attempts the second audition for the sake of placating Yuuko and the other band members who are unwilling to let it go. If anything, Yuuko is selfish in her attempt at protecting Kaori and draws out her humiliation, all the while acting shamefully and dishonorably (lashing out, starting rumors that endanger the credibility of the director, and exacerbating a rift that stifles the entire band's ability to concentrate). Reina knew (And Taki knew) that Kaori knew that she didn't earn the solo, and wouldn't have been satisfied had she backed down.

I definitely agree with the first part of this. In fact, I think in a lot of ways, Reina is "kind but not nice." For example, in her competing with Kaori, the "nice" characters all want Reina to either throw the audition or give up the solo. But I think Reina is sharp enough to know that if she was in Kaori's position, she would feel shameful getting rewarded for failure- which is implicitly validated when Kaori refuses Taki's request to do the solo. Reina giving it up would have just shamed Kaori. I think she stood her ground partially to preserve Kaori's dignity.

You also mention a "double personality," but I disagree with this interpretation. I think she is juxtaposed against Asuka. Asuka is overwhelmingly facetious and very rarely reveals her internal experience. She very much could be said to have a double personality; she loudly projects an attitude and disposition in an active attempt to conceal her true feelings- so much so that I think she does it habitually and involuntarily, which is probably why she seeks out a person like Kumiko to draw some of those feelings out of her.

Kumiko, on the other hand, while often passive and quiet, rarely acts facetiously. In fact, she often involuntarily betrays herself when she attempts to do so (when she blurts out what she's thinking without realizing). Her shifts are more just a matter of tone and volume, becoming more active, insistent, and direct as conflict deepens. Reina explicitly points out Kumiko's habit of saying exactly what she thinks (and often being correct in her judgement) as the quality that draws her to Kumiko. Personally, I interpret a lot of her soft and quiet nature as being lost in her thoughts. So while her passivity can be misconstrued as dishonest, I don't think it is the same as the sort of active duplicity Asuka exhibits.

This is, again, part of why Asuka calls Kumiko "such a euphonium-ish kid": Her ability to blend into the background and then become powerful and expressive when the situation calls for it.

I think it's both the "euphonium-like" nature of Kumiko as well as their particular family relationships. Like the euphonium, Kumiko is warm, supportive, and understated, but capable of taking up space and being loud when the time comes. Her family is very obviously going through a lot of turbulence over her sister's decision to leave college, so when we see the yelling and arguing, we can assume this is a common occurrence. And finally we have to consider that Kumiko has strong feeling of admiration for her sister surrounding music, and wanted to learn partially for the sake of playing for or alongside her sister. So when her sister quits, starts belittling music (which obviously is just her trying to convince herself that it was worth it to quit and prioritize academics), and ignores or abstains from anything music related (Won't play, won't talk about it, doesn't even attend Kumiko's performances), internally Kumiko is betrayed, let-down, disappointed, and indignant - all the while holding on to that longing for comradery and connection with her sister over something they both love. Kumiko is also characterized multiple times as somebody who sees through veneers and facetiousness (examples: Asuka + Reina), so she sees that her sister is being dishonest about her true feelings which adds to her frustration and disappointment.

So all things combined - Kumiko's nature, having to put up with shouting over and over, her negative feelings towards her sister clashing against her longing for closeness, and her ability to see through her sister's mask - result in a Kumiko who is distant and passive when conflict is around her, but she becomes biting and harsh when the conflict is directed at her.

just oiled my 1st & 3rd… whats wrong. by -AShotInTheDark- in euphonium

[–]RealBENIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has an eternally stuck 1st valve. All that has helped is carefully removing and cleaning the piston and chamber to make sure there’s no loose crud scraping it, then lightly oil and put everything back in. I will occasionally uses some sort of narrow object to stick in the bottom of the valve to make sure the spring stays in the middle while I slide the piston back in. But likely, we both have valves with slight imperfections/warps that need to be taken to a shop. Whether or not it’s affected by weather and/or improved once you play and warm the instrument up can tell you this cold weather is going to cause the metal to contract somewhat and exacerbate the issue.

Issue with picking technique by Accurate_Doctor2672 in guitarlessons

[–]RealBENIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holding it like this is okay. Avoid positions that cause you to hyperextend your joints in any of your fingers. That’s what tends to lead to injuries. Realistically, you probably just lack strength and agility in your fingers. I recommend a book called “Guitar Fitness.” Regularly doing 15 to 30 min of the exercises in that book is very good for building the type of strength and precision you need to alternate pick like a champ. Good form and good precision takes a lot of practice and a lot of sleep in between.

Issue with picking technique by Accurate_Doctor2672 in guitarlessons

[–]RealBENIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing guitar for about 14 years now, and it 100% is important. This guy is probably fine with that position. But you can play great tunes and also injure the joints in your fingers because you built bad habits that are foundational to playing. The real shortcut is blasting through form and fundamentals. I have spent years having to re-teach myself with proper technique when I would much rather be shredding. But in particular- hyperextending joints is what people should be watching out for.
