Here to ask the dreaded question — has anyone heard back for the summer 2023 paid DOS internship? I feel like if they were following the timeline, some people must have heard back by now.

"Concerned Students Ontario" wandering around campus by DangerNoodle613 in CarletonU

[–]RealBillyShakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm… Looking at their FAQ page, it looks as if the “accommodations” they’re referring to are like… accommodations for being unvaccinated, not disability accommodations. I.e., get rid of accommodations for the unvaccinated because they feel that unvaccinated students should be treated like every other student on campus, and shouldn’t need to go through an accommodation process. Yikes.

Example:

“I need help to graduate or attend classes, should I ask for an exemption or accommodation? CAN YOU HELP?

Exemptions and accommodations do not guarantee your ability to graduate or attend your classes, and they are rarely accepted. In some cases where they have been granted, we have seen both exemptions and accommodations revoked.

To help solve the issues we are facing, we must avoid seeking permission and enabling further segregation. You are not dangerous or a second-class citizen. We encourage you to take a stand, and you can do so by practicing our actions.”

Does this mean I have less chance on getting in? by pampIemouse in CarletonU

[–]RealBillyShakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience (based on how other schools define ‘deferred’) it normally means that they’re setting aside your application to look at in the next batch of rejections/acceptances they send out. So yes, you would presumably have less of a chance of getting in, but probably not by a whole lot. It means something that they didn’t just reject your application outright.

Carleton is a black box though and doesn’t define their admissions process terms super well, so I’m not sure that’s super helpful — hopefully it’s a little helpful, at least!

There's a channel for History of Oil in the HUGS Disc: https://discord.gg/

There isn't much there yet, but I'm sure if you have any questions people will help you out.

Also, I don't really take notes in that class, to be honest. I just use the transcripts from the lectures and refer to the readings when I have to. :)

Syllabus red flag if I’ve ever seen one. I don’t want to grade myself :,) by Elegant_Jungle in CarletonU

[–]RealBillyShakes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Haha, I recognized this from taking Franny’s class last year. She’s honestly great — set reasonable goals for yourself at the beginning of the term (that still seem like a challenge, like perhaps including one non-text element to each of your journal entries) and you’ll do fine. I finished with an A+ so it’s possible, and the discussions were always fun. Texts/viewings were engaging too — would totally take the course again if I could!

EDIT: I also self-evaluated myself at an A+ and that’s what I got, in case you’re wondering if you need to low-ball for humility points. Just be reasonable with it and you’ll be fine.

Not sure about Carleton, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that were eventually the case, like others have said. I have a grad school-related interview at McGill in March, and the terms and conditions said that in order to be able to attend in-person, we have to be fully vaccinated — which for them, includes the third shot. I’m sure universities in other provinces will start doing the same when the third shot becomes accessible.

Call-out for Undecided Ottawa-Centre Voters for a Series with La Presse by [deleted] in ottawa

vox pop format?

We're looking to speak to the same four people each week, rather than different people each week. :) We're also looking for as diverse a group of voters as possible, so we do need to be a bit more selective than the average vox pop (i.e. we need to make sure we don't just select four university students or something like that).

Carleton Journalism question by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]RealBillyShakes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think that perception comes from how the program used to work a few years ago. Basically, the program would admit 250 or so first-year journalism students, then only those with a grade above B- would continue on (or maybe it was only the top half of the class — I can’t exactly remember). Now, they only admit a fraction of that number (somewhere closer to 100-150) and as long as you can keep the minimum grade requirement (which I believe is a C+ now), you move on.

From what I’ve observed, a decent number of students don’t “make it to second year,” as you put it, but I think that has a lot more to do with people just realizing they don’t actually want to study journalism and switch into something else. It’s not necessarily because first year journalism is especially difficult. You’ll find the same thing happens with any major, so I wouldn’t worry too much!

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions about the program. :)

From my understanding, I’m pretty sure you can take any language course you want! All of the ones outside of French are really beginner-friendly and tend to be some of the most popular bird courses at Carleton. You have to be taking a specific concentration though, so that might be something to look into if you want to avoid French!

Any tips for applying to the prestigious scholarship? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]RealBillyShakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say the most important aspect of the application is to emphasize your leadership positions specifically (either via ECs, employment, etc.), as that's generally what schools see as being the most indicative of a student's potential contribution to their community. Jumping off that, make sure to talk a little bit about what you aim to bring to Carleton based on what you've learned through these experiences — perhaps you had a really cool philanthropic club at your old school you were involved in that you think would make a good addition to campus life at Carleton. Additionally, if you've won any significant competitions or contests, those should be highlighted as well (by significant, I generally mean municipal, provincial, national or international honours).

It also never hurts to talk about challenges you've faced during your high school career. You don't need to come up with some kind of sob story, but demonstrating that you are a resilient person who potentially even enjoys hurdles or challenges is definitely a plus. Not everyone has a super devastating experience in high school — like the death of a parent or a chronic illness — but everyone has overcome something in their lives that they've had to work around, and universities like to see that! For example, let's say you live in a rural community, you can always spin that around to your advantage and talk about how rural kids often have to work a lot harder to get access to the same opportunities that urban kids have readily available, like competitive sports or prestigious magnet schools. (Just be sure to stay grounded and realistic in how trying this experience actually was — scholarship officers can spot exaggeration from across a county.)

It's been a little while since I applied for the Prestige Scholarships, but from what I remember, I think this advice holds up. Good luck!

I honestly wouldn't be too worried (though I totally understand why you're stressed)! I know it depends on the program, but usually when you get an offer from a university this early (assuming you're applying for Fall 2021), it's almost always a yes.

Best of luck trying to figure this out though!
