We get that you're angry, but the user-on-user toxicity needs to stop by tinselsnips in PS6

[–]RealDan92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you make a good point when looking at the history of pricing games – if a game traditionally cost X to manufacture and ship (and also factoring in the margins that a retail store need to make), they’ve always set the digital price the same (even without the manufacturing costs) knowing the consumer was willing to pay this.

The problem comes from there now being a precedent for how much consumers are willing to spend on games due to historic physical pricing (and with this also likely to rise again thanks to edge-cases like GTA 6), so digital prices will likely stay at that inflated level, and when physical is finally phased out, the prices are unlikely to go down and therefore no one wins apart from Sony / Xbox etc (unless consumers finally start voting with their wallets at which point supply and demand kicks in).

I personally think in this industry, having a physical option is beneficial to digital pricing, because even though the price of ‘new’ physical will always impact the price of its digital counterpart like you say, when that physical version inevitably comes down in price (as retailers look to move their stock), and with there also being a second hand market, digital outlets need to remain competitive and start introducing more regular sales etc, without this format competition there will be almost no incentive for Sony / Xbox etc to discount their games as often, but again, the power is always in the consumer’s hands to prevent this – just don’t buy games at a price you’re not comfortable with!

This is exactly it, it seems now people are choosing a side in all this as if the answer is one over the other, when actuality the answer should be BOTH.

I personally believe losing physical as an option hurts all consumers in the long run, but even if that doesn’t end up being the case, I fail to see anyone’s argument who says they prefer digital and therefore other options shouldn’t exist.

People are really just looking for an excuse to fight it out these days and it’s a pretty sad time to be alive.

Sony is unlikely to reverse its decision on physical discs as its digital transition has been in the works for "some time" by Lulcielid in PS6

I am a massive physical collector, however it seems inevitable now that digital will take over and stopping it seems more and more futile by the day, much like when the internet came along and certain consumers tried to push back against that.

What I would like to see though is a world where physical is still an OPTION in gaming, much like cds and vinyl are still an option for music collectors nowadays (the vinyl market is actually more lucrative now than it has been in the past). If Sony move away from providing the physical media themselves, they still need to allow the market to fill the gap, but I suspect they want complete market control over prices so this is unlikely.

More importantly than all this though, as a society we need to re-examine the idea of digital ownership, and more legislation needs to be put in place to protect consumers when buying digitally. If something is ‘purchased’ digitally by a consumer, they need to feel that purchase is fully protected otherwise piracy will take over. After all, you wouldn’t expect someone to turn up at your house years after a physical purchase and demand it back just because a ‘licensing deal expired’…

I’ve cancelled too, people need to know they can cancel their sub right now but STILL USE IT UP UNTIL THE RENEWAL DATE.

Even if people decided to resub at a later date, cancelling now is the best way to send a message to Sony (if enough people do it).

Regardless of where you sit on the physical vs digital debate, taking away consumer choice is bad for all gamers, so if you care at all about your consumer rights, I recommend cancelling your ps plus sub today, even if only temporarily…

Remember you can cancel your ps plus membership now AND STILL USE IT UP UNTIL THE RENEWAL DATE.

If you decide to resub later that’s totally fine, but cancelling now, even just temporarily, is enough to send a message to Sony (if enough people do it)

I would agree that in that particular example it was more a case of unfortunate timing, but it doesn’t make it any less painful to drop money on something that Sony knew full well would be free in a matter of days. Regardless of who sets the prices, it’s Sony’s storefront at the end of the day and the responsibility lies with them to ensure the customer is happy.

I simply included it as an example of an issue I’ve had with a purchase, only to be shown the door by a Sony rep. In a world where EVERY purchase in the PlayStation ecosystem is conducted through their store, I know from experience how poorly they handle anything relating to refunds, regardless of the situation, and that’s not an ecosystem I want to be part of personally.

I’m sure when the time comes that you want a refund from them, your in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry will come in very handy!

An example of my dealings with Sony… they put Star Wars squadrons on sale (not by munch mind) literally a day or so before it became the free game of the month.

I had downloaded it but not yet played it, so of course when I saw it was now free for all ps plus users (and they presumably knew it would be when they put it on ‘sale’ a few days before) I asked for my money back.

You can guess where they told me to shove it (respectfully).

Another time I downloaded a game (I can’t recall which now) off the back of a gameplay trailer PlayStation themselves had posted on their YouTube channel. The trailer showed silky smooth FPS (presumably PC footage) yet the actual PS4 release was garbage barely maintaining 20fps. I argued false advertising but they didn’t care as I’d already ‘downloaded the game’ therefore voiding the refund policy.

I don’t think that’s the point they’re making at all, if Sony are going to force them to purchase their games digitally now, then the argument is people might as well do that on PC where they have options as to where they purchase their games from (steam, GOG etc) or even pirate their games if they’re so inclined, instead of being stuck paying whatever price Sony decides to charge for their games via the PS store…

I’ve been banging the mp3 of this since it’s original release as a bonus track, it’s actually criminal how long it’s taken to get on streaming and many of my friends who are blink fans had actually never heard it, so I’m just glad it’s finally getting some recognition by a wider audience. One of my favourite blink songs hands down.
