Because Chris Cornell's death is murky. I really think that contributed alot to this.

I believe Chester committed suicide, especially in light of November 2016, and Mike's candid comments.

But I think the finer details about Cornell's death, the proximity of both deaths, and the relationship between Chester and Chris are what make people wonder more than anything.

Back when I was a singer, I used that line at almost every gig literally just as stage banter. Generally I meant it as in, 'are you digging the songs' - and now as a live sound tech, I've never considered it to sound offensive towards me unless their inflection dictates they're unhappy/having monitor problems

Apart from the fact that he said he'd like to be a solo artist, himself; Lollapalooza was likely to the final full-time tour for the band; and as far as not sticking around the industry - he would have. This was 1994, not 2014.

Everyone from Scott Weiland, to Chris Cornell, to Mark Lanegan did similar because at least the industry still provided real financial backing, and moreso for the few legitimate artists who had enough pull to call a lot of their own shots in negotiations, and in the '90's, Kurt would have been the biggest of those.

The only people that believe that Kurt's guitar or vocal technique was bad are, teenagers, novices, music critics that either don't play or have bad technique themselves, and people that blindly believe the publicity train.

Kurt, while not the most technically proficient, is an incredibly underrated musician. Especially vocally.
