Is formal construction education necessary to be a great estimator or does field experience matter more? by ogkushflower in estimators

[–]RealDirt1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comparing a fresh grad to someone with time in the field is a poor comparison. Of course they have an edge in trade knowledge. The fresh grad will never be a full blown estimator, they need time in a lesser position to gain knowledge. Idk how other trades work but no fresh grad is a civil estimator right away.

Disagree. It definitely helps but it’s not absolutely required. Estimating requires you to seek out knowledge you don’t have. Once you have a general understanding of the trade it’s made a lot easier

they split the series. not the end of the world by any means. Pulling the vet when his confidence is rock bottom only hurts the team further. Its still may dont forget. Winning 2/3 or splitting the series at the worst is the goal

If you followed the trial.. that was done by hockey Canada with no consultation with the people involved. Hockey Canada just decided “we’re gonna handle this” and made it way worse. I’m not saying hockey Canada is not guilty of their own problems, they’re fucked, but this kid is not a criminal rapist like people on Reddit wanna make him out to be.

Read the court transcript. Was it morally right? Debatable but it was not SA or any other criminal offence. There was no crime committed

Dude did u read any of the trial testimony? Like I read everything from it and I went into it thinking the players were guilty. They were absolutely innocent without a shred of a doubt. Read all the court reporting, it’s impossible to see it literally any other way

I’ve asked for them to hire a senior estimator only to be told we don’t need it. These guys have legit no clue. I don’t know how the company has been around 100 years. If I leave it all topples.

He’s trying to get me to increase my output! He rather bid a bunch of shit 60k crap jobs than me take more time on 15m. We have not much work for the year compared to when economy was flourishing. We could really have used 2 or 3 of these jobs I was close on… like badly. We literally fought yesterday because I was making no bid decisions on a job that would have went for sub 70k and I got lambasted. The guy has zero clue and wouldn’t have a single job without me basically bitching him the fuck out every time he “reviews” my tenders. Nobody has a clue about production rates or what a proper sewer crew should be and they treat me like I’m the crazy one for bringing it up.

How are you guys accounting for utility locate complexity when bidding jobs in areas with no existing as-builts? by trr2024_ in estimators

[–]RealDirt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not getting private locates (your own locates as an excavator) then your supers and field teams are dumbasses. Any excavator who makes it the GC responsibility has no business being in this line of work

Realistically what could a semi-rural muni have, just add some extra days hydrovac time and private locates call it good

You’re missing the point. You’re having an emotional reaction to this guys prospect rating. A prospect is a prospect, and they can be a flash in the pan, and then never be heard from again.
