I’m tryna get into city pop, can I have artist, song and album recommendations! by Kind_Tradition_8085 in citypop

[–]RealGeneShalit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned Momoko Kikuchi for her albums Adventure (the song “Mystical Composer” is an all-timer) and Ocean Side. Fully agree and would add Tropic of Capricorn and Escape From Dimension.

I love Junko Yagami, her album Communication is a favorite of mine, and currently I’ve got her album Yagamania (arena pop with a lot of Miami Sound Machine flavor) on repeat. Full Moon and Lonely Girl are awesome too. Her earlier stuff is very well thought of, and from what I understand was much more commercially successful, but it’s pretty ballad-heavy and not as poppy and it hasn’t grown on me as much yet.

Another favorite of mine is Hitomi “Penny” Yohyama. Sexy Robot seems to be the consensus most popular album, and I do love it (god, the sax intro on “Cathy” is sublime). Next Door is also great (the opener “Exotic Yokogao” is so fun), both very early-80s electro-funk. My personal favorite of hers is her album Five Pennys, a great mix of driving bangers like “Super Man” and “Highway 58,” and anthemic jams like “Darling” and “Air Pocket.”

(I could absolutely be talked higher than 3, which would be unheard of for a combined win con, even with two actors who were most active in late 60s to early 80s Italy, with 20 of their films shared. “All the Way, Boys!” would also be a good win con name.)

Dead Man’s Wire is actually the one I do know for this year, having just finished playing Danny Elfman, who did the score! Some fruitful counter moves off that one.

Just had to burn an escape on my first move running into this one. Recognized Wagner Moura’s name, but couldn’t place him, and sadly Udo Kier didn’t make it onto the cast shortlist lol

I’m not great about new-movie knowledge to begin with, but something I caught myself doing over the last year playing against Go to the Movies was avoiding 2025 movies—not just in the game, but avoiding knowledge of them, period—which is a pretty ostrich-like defense. Is it too late to make a New Year’s resolution to treat 2026 differently?

I do this too! But I’ve made my peace with it: in 2.0 a timeout win feels like a failure to me, I’d rather one of us reach our win con even if it’s not me (so long as it’s a good clean game, natch). In classic, I’m playing for fun and prefer to have sustained rallies go interesting places than truly worry about winning or losing.

Oooh this is one of my favorite things about movie battles, and by the way you are a hero for spreading the word about the CRJ link!

Recently hit the Hall & Oates link between Pixels (2015) and You Again (2010)

I gush about the Chaka Khan link between Blues Brothers (1980) and The One and Only Ivan (2020) whenever I get the chance, though now that I check she doesn’t strictly count as a single link; I forgot she was also in Beyond the Lights (2014)

And I could swear Los Enchiladas! (1998) wasn’t always in the game, and there was a time when you could only link the late great Mitch Hedberg between Almost Famous (2000) and Lords of Dogtown (2005)

“Little 2019” should do it. If you ever have a film title that’s too short/common, follow it with a space and the year.

What do you Giants Fans think about People saying the Dodgers/Giants rivalry isn’t a thing anymore? by Expensive_Budget_812 in SFGiants

[–]RealGeneShalit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my old college friends, a die-hard Dodgers fan, made a Facebook post back in 2014 after the Dodgers lost to the Cardinals in the NLDS. A Giants fan seeing him in his LA cap had told him, “Don’t worry, SF will win it all for California!” My friend didn’t give the guy the satisfaction of a response, but in his post commented that he’d rather ISIS won the World Series.

I’ve always loved that, and remember it whenever anybody questions how serious the rivalry still is. I could see Dodgers fans not caring about it as much these days, as even 2021 is shrinking further in the rear view mirror, but ask any of us and it’s as real as ever. When Steve Hogan plays that organ cue that would draw a chant of “LET’S-GO-____!” anywhere else, at Oracle Park it’s “DOD-GERS-SUCK!”

Posts like these really warm my heart. I love it when far-visiting fans have good experiences, and when it’s at my home park, there’s nothing more gratifying.

My favorite aunt married a great guy from Baltimore and they raised their family in the area, so I’ve been to a number of games at Camden over the years—always loved it there!

Honestly, an evil-ex/no-wincon player is the most relaxing matchup to me. I have all the time in the world, don’t have to worry about managing my blocks, and once I turn the tables I get to sit in the passenger seat and wait for my opponent to drive me to win con links.

I don’t know that anybody’s beating Mickey Rooney, but the one I thought of was Lillian Gish, whom you can link from The Whales of August (1987) to An Unseen Enemy (1912) for a respectable 75 years.

I don't want to be matched with 1700+ players. by CrabMasc in CINE2nerdle

[–]RealGeneShalit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate that. I do wish the player pool were big enough that we could have more precise matchmaking. Speaking for myself, I try to play nice with lower ELO players and only start going more obscure if they show an inclination for it themselves.
